I would like to add to that thought about staying in the right lane. I have been a SCCA licensed driver and also have instructed a few drivers schools. I took a Skip Barber racing school when I was first trying to learn to go fast in the corners. I learned one really good thing from that experience and that was to "Drive the Horrison". Never drive only fixated on the car directely in front of you. This means to look as far ahead of you as the pavement allows even to follow the road to where it meets the sky at times. (On hills)
Watch the lead car or truck in a collum you are following.

Beleive it or not this pays off even on the street and especially at night. This will accomplish two things. It will give you a huge edge if the car in front of you should suddenly brake to make a turn. You will instantely notice something happening even though you are paying more attention to the lead car. Any car in the line that does something out of the ordinary you will see it and more importantely you will have the maximum time to take evasive action.

Accidents can happen so fast and easy when you least expexct it. I remember years ago I had a guy come clear across a 4 lane street toward me one night and he totaled my black 72 SJ GP because he would not let off the gas and was showing off doing burnouts in his 70 Nova and went left of center clear to catch me over on the right hand lane coming toward him. He hit me so hard it stopped me dead in my tracks. The rear wheel skid marks from my front tires didn't get past the back tires. I was running 35 at the time thank goodness.

Be carefull out there guys.

Ditto on the "lead car" and "follow the horizon" methods. Those are two good habits most all of us do, even if only subconciously.

They taught me that in Drivers Ed. in school...any of you guys ever have to drive in a "simulator" in school...ours was a 60 something Ford product with 3 on the tree and automatic....the clutch pedal vibrated when it started to grab ...you drove while watching a film !!! Too cool.

Just heard a radio announcer say this the other day. He used to be a State Trooper and he did his own research on head-on crashes on four lane highways. The majority of the time it occurs in the left lane, which would be the slow lane (right lane) for the driver going the wrong way. Drunk drivers usually stay in that lane.
The trooper/announcer always told people to stay in the right lane unless passing because of this reason. One night he was riding in the left lane (fast lane) and decided to take his own advice, moves over to the right lane and moments later here comes a drunk in the left lane.

Here's for staying in the right lane!!

The timing of this post is freaky...just last night, the wife and I went to pick up our big trailer, but right as we were to exit the 4-lane for the secondary road, we came upon an accident...sure enough, a drunk driver traveling the wrong way on the wrong side of the 4-lane...the drunk survived but it killed the man driving the other car and his wife was not expected to make it either...

Good thing cars are built with "crumple zones" or else that guy would have been a warm pile of hamburger meat.

thats a crazy wreck. like 6 months ago my friend lost his dad and two brothers in a wreck exactly like that one. except they were in a z71 truck. traffic was at a stop and they were hit by the semi behind them into the one in front of them with the one behind them at full speed. other people said it sounded like an explosion.
i for one do agree with the posts above about watching the cars in front of you and driving reasonably. i'm not worried about my driving skill at all. i follow the law and am always careful, its what other people do that scares me. the tests to get a liscense are a joke. i think people need to be re certified every few years.

Sadly, pickups and SUVs do not have to meet the same federal impact standards as sedans and minivans. Truck and SUV bodies are basically just bolted onto the frame and are much cheaper to build than sedans and minivans. I read somewhere that Ford's Expedition assembly plant shows huge annual profits and has basically saved Ford financially because the Expedition costs about 12,000 to build yet they sell for over 30. The Navigator is just some more chrome and leather and sells for over 40. According to the article I read, Ford can't build Expeditions fast enough.

Granted, an 18-wheeler at 70 mph impacting any stopped vehicle will probably injure the stopped vehicle's occupants, especially if they're sandwiched between two trucks, but that WRX driver basically walked away.

I was riding with a buddy on the San Diego freeway a few years ago. We were in his '87 BMW doing 65 in the right lane when my buddy suddenly said "Oh s__t!" followed by a horrendous impact from behind. Some young guy was racing down the freeway and cutting in and out of traffic at high speed. He made a sudden bid to the right lane, didn't see us, and rear-ended us doing over 80. Luckily, we were able to pull over and my buddy and I were not hurt hurt. His Beemer was bent a little behind both doors as the rear impact was dead-center. The kid jumped out (his car stopped running due to front-end damage) and he began explaining that he had "fainted" because of a medical condition and his girlfriend was hysterical. We just called the highway patrol via cell phone and waited. The CHP was there in about 20 minutes and they listened to both sides and then put the kid in the back of the patrol car. Apparently the kid was wanted on a felony charge. He was uninsured and my buddy decided to just let it go. He still drives that bent BMW.

I watch my mirrors constantly, especially in traffic.

What's a joke is that the other day I was at the DMV getting my DL renewed and there was someone about 70 or so in there, they asked the person to read the line inside the machine to test their eyes and they got every line wrong they asked them to do it again and the tester said "do you think that it is an E?" Yes he says...ok you got that one right. Do you think that the next one is a S? Yes ok you got that one right. And so on!
When the guy left I said to the lady "I am waiting at least 15 minutes so I will be no where around that guy." She looked at me like I was an idiot!

Unbelievable!!!
