Re: Old photos
This Maverick was sponsored by Car Care in North Vancouver. These cars, along with Vegas and Pintos with V8s always looked they had too much motor. Bulging hoods, and headers hanging down gave the impression that they were just crammed with motivation.

Re: Old photos
This Camaro was sponsored by Gladstone Motors on Kingsway. Looks a little twisted in this photo. They were a used musclecar dealer that occasionally had nice cars.

Re: Old photos
Ok, I was out of town for a few days, so I'll add a few tonight.
This photo is of an Austin A40 that was a Vancouver fixture for years. He drove this regularly on the street, and it was Big Block powered. Black with blue pearl flames made it a striking car. Sorry for the poor quality. |

Another fuzzy night shot, of a Willys, though not a streeter.

Re: Old photos
This photo was from 71 or 72. Someone wasted no time making this Vega wagon into a race car.

Re: Old photos
This next series of photos is from 1975 on a section of old highway between Osoyoos and Keremeos BC. A bunch of guys got together and made arrangements with local authorities to close it off a few times that summer for drag racing. Word got around and it was pretty well attended. Cars from the southern interior of BC, and a few Okanagan County, Washington cars ran there. No timing equipment at first, but a good time was had by all. I did relief flag starting duties, but mostly took photos. I did run my 4 spd W31 there for the one time it was open in 1976. It shut down after it was determined that the insurance that they had wasn't worth the paper it was printed on.
The local RCMP constable fully supported this as well. You'll see his police car in the background of a couple of the photos. (454 Biscayne ) Of course there was an ambulance and tow truck there too. OK, this first photo shows the mayor of Keremeos and his 65 GTO running against the local Super Value owners El Camino. |
