Dad showed me the innards of a couple of 8 tracks last week when he repaired my Magical Mystery Tour cassette...how those things wind on the outside while feeding from the center is mind boggling!

How about a four track. had one in my 66 chevelle ss.
my friend was power shifting my car into 3rd and hit the tape deck with his knucles,let go of the clutch while the trany was in between second and third at 6000 rpm. Scattered the saginaw
into a million pieces.Thank god. Gm warantied this piece of
crap 6 times. I finally put in an m21.Took out the 4track.

I like to stick with the genuine GM stuff.....

And yes M it does weigh a ton, If you open the console it wants to rip the door off......

Some units would have 4 wires - power, ground and left & right speaker. You would then run a wire from each speaker to a ground location.
They actually used to sell a bracket you mounted to the bottom of your dash, with a corresponding bracket mounted to the top of the tape deck. When you parked you would slide the deck out of the top mount and stash it in your trunk. Midnight Auto always did a brisk business in 8-Track players!

Imagine punching a screw driver through your dash speaker, then putting the dash speaker in a 55 gallon drum, turning the volume up to max, placing your head into the aforementioned 55 gallon drum, and then playing Iron Butterfly's In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida.

Now, hopefully you can picture the type of high fidelity we had back then.
