Patrick. I think I filled it with Mobil One and added some Marvel Mystery Oil. It will probably sit most of it's life so about the only other thing to add is something like STP that clings to the walls real well. Suggestions ?

Charley....how about Z Max? The demonstrations that I've seen on TV are pretty impressive, the stuff is actually absorbed into the metal. I'm thinking about adding it in my 70 Z along with the older version of Rotella with the high levels of ZDDP. Anyone here have an opinion one way or the other about Z Max???

The time you have taken to put this web site together is greatly appreciated.

Charlie, great site! This will be a big help as I restore my 70 LA built Z-28. If you get a chance, can you post dimensions of the original stripes using a tape measure much the same way the assembly manual shows, for others that want correct stripes on their 70 LA built Z-28's.

Thanks, Paul

I just spoke to an engine builder last weekend that swears by Comp Cams oil additive to make up for the lost ingredients in most of today's oils. (i.e. Zinc, etc.)

I would not use the sybthetic oil at all. Most modern synthetics have no additives that are necessary for older engines with flat tappet cams as they were primarily designed for moderm engines with roller valvetrains and such. You want an oil with good "cling". I would recommend Valvoline VR1 race oil and a bottle of Comp additive. Fortunately, in this case you are dealing with a car that even though it's relatively old, the valve spring pressures are modest and the parts are already mated. I guess one area that could be a potential hazard is if a lifter stuck in the bore and failed to rotate. That would flatten the cam in no time.

...Please tell me you used an oil that is high in zinc. Most modern oils do not have enough zinc to protect a flat tappet cam. I would hate to see a cam lobe go flat and possibly destroy that engine. This is the main reason why I joined. I am THAT concerned about that oil you used.

Patrick,
I use ZDDPlus religiously in all of my flat-tappet engines as it has the highest zinc content on the market. In fact, I have been a distributor for several years now. If anyone is in need, let me know.

Rich....can you do better than 10 bucks a bottle? They sell for 10 bucks on their web site and Joe at the Parts Place also is selling for 10 bucks.

What about GM Engine Oil Supplement (EOS). I understand it is high in Zinc. It better be, I'm using it in my Chevelle.
