That's a baby giant growing mushroom called a giant 'Puffball', its edible. by mid Sept-early October they grow the size of a basketball. though not as tasty-fresh as this baby found mid August.

This is how we grow the shrooms down south.. This is the 3rd grouping of mushrooms this year in the same spot.. Should have gotten a comparison for perspective but the head of the shroom is about 4" in dia on the largest one..

We have those growing like crazy in SW FLA as well. One was the size of a Duck Pin bowling ball, and solid when I kicked it. I wonder how bad they are for dogs?
