I'm in the middle of South Carolina. I'm expecting a lot of rain. I hope the winds have calmed down by the time it gets here.

Forecasters said wind speeds have dropped from a high of 140 mph (225 kph) to 110 mph (175 kph), reducing it from a Category 4 storm to a Category 2, and additional fluctuations and weakening were likely as it swirled toward land. But authorities warned Florence has an enormous wind field that has been growing larger, raising the risk of the ocean surging on to land and making Florence extremely dangerous.

By late Thursday afternoon, the Carolina coasts can expect winds topping 80 mph. And that's just the prelude to untold days of misery.

What also makes Florence extremely dangerous are the deadly storm surges, mammoth coastal flooding and historic rainfall expected far inland.

Some very bad news . . . less than 15% of all the homes damaged by the flooding caused by hurricane Florence have Flood Insurance. Regular Home Owners Insurance does not cover damage to home/property caused by flooding. Flood insurance is sold by the government: (and managed by FEMA) National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). This issue also affects people who rent as far as their belongings.

The storm has been blamed for 17 deaths, 11 of them in North Carolina.
