Default LS-6 camshaft

I have polled the experts here before and I'm looking for more opinions. The 427 I am building is as follows - bored .060 w/forged pistons approx 10.2 : 1 CR; 063 heads fully ported, alum hi-rise, 750 puddle dumper, etc. Pretty much old school. The engine will be dropped into a 70' Nova, 400TH w/3.42 posi.

I have been reading the solid lifter LS-6 cam (similar to the Comp 11-106-3) has been used pretty successfully by the Vette' crowd. Also, been told this cam is much the same as used in the L-72. I have no problem keeping up with solid lifter adjustments as I have had a number of LT-1s and early 426 Hemi engines.

So what are your thoughts concerning this cam on the street 95% or the time and occasional strip time?

It was used in several thousand GM production cars for several years and has proven itself many times over. It's an extremely streetable 11-second camshaft if the rest of the car is set up correctly.

Also having first hand experience with the L72 -427 back in the day, you will not go wrong with that combination.

Yes -- from what I have read, the Comp grind is pretty much the same as the "143" with a bit of "modern" technology dialed in. Besides, there is nothing like the "rattle" of solids in Chevy engines idling about 850 RPM. Thanks ... The TAZ

Another great camshaft that I have used on a couple of LS6 motors is the Lunati 20202 Camshaft. The specs are close to the factory cam and it performs really well [img]<<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif[/img]

That's what I have in my 450 HP 427. Needs 3.73 gears or better, so the manufacture says.

i would get the blueprinted version from Crane.

the cam is all done at about 62-6500rpm straight up. Retarding the cam 4-6 degrees will allow you to buzz it 7000-7200. The cam is a proven piece of art. Has a smooth idol when the engine warms up. it would work well on the street, and well on the strip.

^ What he said. Go with the crane version, the pure stock guys have done the research over the past 2+ decades now after trying everyone else's flavor yet the crane remains the gold standard. And I wouldnt worry too much about the gear, it idles fine and has plenty of beans down low, the converter is more important...that cam has gone deeeeep into the 11s through exhaust manifolds and on polyglass tires so it can't be too bad.

I have a Federal Mogul 143 version. The price was right, but I have not installed it yet. Should I get the Crane? 375hp engine in 69 Camaro , M20,3.31 rear. Hoping for mid to low 12's. What do you think?
