Default Need carbureter input

We don't seem to have a "performance" specific forum, so I'll ask here, since it is a Chevrolet I have.
I had a 496 built several years ago and I provided the builder with an 800 cfm Edelbrock carb for it. He said it would run lean at WOT and recommended getting a better carb, but didn't recommend a Holley, as they are too finicky, still. His recommendation was a Quick Fuel, but the brand was bought by Holley shortly thereafter and I stopped looking at them. Since the engine sat for several years and is now in a car I hope to drive before I die, I need to get back to this before SCR 25...
I am looking at 850 cfm carbs on Summit, as they seem to have the largest variety, and like the Proform 67214. The builder encouraged mechanical secondaries, as I have a 4 speed trans and an electric choke would be nice. All my Holley's thru the 70's were mechanical, but with manual choke and, yes, I could live with one again.

I'm also curious about the FST RT-X series carbs, as these 2 models fit better in a budget. The car will be 95% street driven but I don't want it to lean out and damage the engine for the occasional WOT blast or on the drag strip.

Any experience with these, or other dependable carbs will be greatly appreciated.

IF the new Holley's are improved to eliminate re-tuning every time the temperature and humidity change, I would still consider that. When I was in my 20's, I didn't mind constantly changing jets and power valves, but I'm a ways beyond wanting to do that now.
Thanks guys !

That's what I have now. I did buy a tuning kit, but never did anything with it. The engine builder did say it would be better with a tune kit. Maybe I should be working with that carb first... His other dislike of the Eddy, was it isn't a double pumper, mechanical secondary.

Mitch,

Do you have the specs on the engine? (compression, cam, intake port volume, etc)

I had Pro Systems build a Holley for a 422 SBC I built and it was bang on.....right out of the box. A/F ratios were right on during the dyno test, it was VERY drivable, and proved to be a bolt it on and forget it.

It was worth every nickel over the standard Holley.

I have only driven my 496 a couple of times since my car is still incomplete but it runs great!! I have a Holley 850 double pumper on this engine. It is so snappy at operating temperature, no stumble. All we changed was the squirters for the primary accelerator pump circuit. Other than that just the jets and idle circuit. Holley's are pretty easy to tinker with. I have no choke on it and have to hold the throttle open a little when it's cold but after a minute it's fine.

Lean conditions under throttle transition on a double pumper happen from improper accelerator pump set up, usually just the squirters, or the wrong power valve. Distributor advance is also very important here.

Nothing wrong with vacuum secondary carbs.... There is a reason the factory used them, they're much smoother, economical, and easier to tune. Usually easier to get the cars to hook up on street tires with a vacuum secondary too, but with a 496 I think the chances of you getting traction on the street is probably near 0%

Chuck, my car isn't street legal yet, but I have driven it on our dead end, country road a couple times. The cam is an NOS old school 280H I hoarded for many years, so the idle is that old ragged sound and it doesn't really smooth out until about 2,500 rpm. Not near as efficient as the new grinds, but sounds the part for a '66 Chevelle.

I agree with the near zero traction, even with 3.31 gears and 295/60x15 radials. The neighbors got to experience a little of that last summer, when the tires started going up in smoke at 20 mph and the tach hit 3,500.

Tim, I'll give the guys at prosystems a call next week and see what they have to say. Thanks for the link.

It's just a "fair weather car" anyway. I can't see starting it much colder than 50° We've only been below zero a couple nights so far, but it's the new year weekend, so it has to go minus 15 or so tonight, for all the people out celebrating... I remember that shit from 45 years ago. Even with plenty of "anti freeze" in the veins it was still DAMNED COLD...
