Yes, I would expect that to be the case as well, however the other factor to considered is causing distortion in the glass when looking through it. The polishing pads I used were 5 inch diameter (they do make 3 inch diameter) so I did not want to spend too much time in one particular spot.

I had a slight gouge in middle of a swath of scratches on the pass side of my original front glass I used a 3" felt pad flat against the surface to polish the entire glass after I used a dremel to SLOWLY smooth the depth of the scratch.
It is now only noticed if you look for it.
