Default ZL-1 #5

Does anyone know the details, or reason that this car is listed as "destroyed"? Is there any proof that it was "destroyed"?

The story I heard many years ago was that it is the former Shay Nichols car. It had been raced since new and was a full tube frame car. What remained of the cowl area still had the partial VIN stamp. The dash was gone.

It may have been crashed since, who knows. No matter; way too far gone to restore. Maybe they saved the body & VIN tags...

I hope to receive new information on Friday that would confirm that the car, without drive train, is still intact. I will share whatever I find out.

Dutchesscamaro,

Did you find out anything new about this ZL-1?

There is an old article on the car from when Shay raced it. It had a wild looking multi colored paint job with white interior and had won some trophy's as a show car.

I did find out additional information concerning ZL1 #5. The car is complete and unmolested.
It is tied up in legal issues at the moment. Once cleared up. I have an amazing story to tell.
Probably 6 months away. Just remember you read it here first.

The reason I have listed destroyed for # 5 (Shay's Race car) was that this car was a tubbed rolling chassis, with no dash, Fisher body tag or vin tag. This chassis was for sale years ago, and the person who wanted it called me for advice. He was hesitant about buying it because of the missing vin tag. I believe someone else may have had the title for it. I do have pictures of the original ZL-1 engine for this car, which was significantly bored out. It was also for sale a while back. I do not know the legal ramifications of re-titling a car without a vin tag. It will be interesting to see the results of this posting.

One significant observation about the car Shay Nichols raced came up a few years ago. Vintage photos show a white standard interior. No Gibb ZL1 Camaro was built with a white standard interior. Maybe it was changed out or dyed; no one knows and no one knows what became of the car. It is possible the car she raced was not ZL1 #5.
