Default 68 El Camino Radiator

Not really restoration, but definitely technical related.

68 El Camino. Nothing matching numbers about it.

Originally a 307 PG car with factory air and PS.

355 Small block with a roller cam; not high rpm, high torque at low rpm because I use it as a tow vehicle.

4L60E with a stand alone controller.

3.31 12 bolt rear.

First long road trip (OKC to St. Louis and back) the car overheated multiple times. Turned out the BRAND NEW Tstat was stuck almost shut. Replaced the Tstat. Still gets warmer than I would like with a full load towing, up hill. Only has to be above 75F for it to start climbing. Has not overheated, because when it starts to climb, I just slow down, and it comes back to 185 to 190.

Radiator is a Chinese plastic tank aluminum core with one inch tubes. Stock clutch fan and shroud. I think I just need a bigger radiator. Don't really want to break the bank, but don't mind paying for quality.

Radiator suggestions appreciated.

Post El Camino Radiator...

I have used some of their products...well made. Their desert cooler aluminum might be a good choice or the triple flow 4 core copper/brass...no mods needed. Give them a call to discuss your setup and see what they recommend.

Others may suggest electric fan models...there are some good ones available...I'll let the experts chime in.

I have a Hayden heavy duty thermal fan clutch sitting on the shelf you can try, give me the word and I will mail it. It pulls too much air for 6500rpm engine. I went back to a standard duty.

I wouldnt think the single row radiator is the issue unless it is just of poor quality as I have ran around for years with the stock 2 row SB rad in front of a 10:1 468 with no problems what so ever.

What is your timing curve? vacuum advance?
