Re: SS 396 4 speed
I thought the 396 was only available in the SS.

Re: SS 396 4 speed
The title will most likely be of no help here. With a 70 Chevelle, the best way to know how the car was originally equipped from the factory is to have one or more of the following items:
1. Documented owner history. 2. Assembly line build sheet (these are readily & regularly faked so it takes someone pretty knowledgeable to tell if it's real or a fake) 3. Original warranty card, commonly known as a Protecto-Plate (same comments about the build sheet apply here). Without those, it's extremely difficult if not impossible.

Re: SS 396 4 speed
I think you can tell by looking for something specific on the steering coupler, (?).

Re: SS 396 4 speed
The steering coupler on the big blocks were bolt on, small blocks were pressed on, but that won't really make it an SS. As Bill said, there's no way to tell a real SS Chevelle after 68, unless it has some legit paper. Anyone could have added SS specific items over the 40 years.
