The worst part is, the auctions are like Teflon; nothing sticks! The end result is usually down to the buyer vs. seller. The auction IMO, should be somewhat liable, but the fine print in the collector car auction contracts say that they are not responsible for descriptions. Once the attorneys are involved, they end up (the majority of the time) being the winner.

it also depends how long ago the car was bought. if the paperwork is fake they probably restamped the vin numbers also on the pad. Thats a big no -no.

In trying to keep an open mind, I always tell my inspection customers, "fake paperwork does not make for a fake car and a rebodied car or one with a replaced VIN tag can still have 'good' paperwork." In other words, just because the window sticker is fake does not mean for sure the car is. I had a window sticker made for my Impala back in the 80's that looked very real but I was sure to tell everyone it was a reproduction.

I agree SS427, the bad thing about fake paperwork is that most people think that the car is as fake as the paperwork. Another bad thing, is that if the paperwork is real good, that subsequent owners may not know and that's where the problems start at it snowballs into a big problem. An honest person may be telling "lies" and not know it. The lower-priced "cruise night" cars aren't the problem; it's the high-dollar cars that should be pre-inspected.

Absolutely agreed but back in the early 80's that was really not the case especially since and in my case only, 1) an SS427 was only bringing about $4-5k and 2) the window sticker said "reproduction" on it in very small letters.

I have a reproduction sticker on my car as well. I don't think it has the word "reproduction" on it anywhere, but I tell anyone who reads it. The font is incorrect as my wife printed on her computer, but since I don't represent it as original I'm OK with it. It is a real shame that this hobby, that continues to be a passion for me, has become an avenue for the greedy and dishonest to scam people out of a buck.
