Sold 1965 HURST wheels - full set of 4 original matched rims

Hi Gang, often, I used the lead off of "rare part..."

But with these, I have no qualms at all calling these hard to find!

A matched set of 4 original, famous HURST wheels - aluminum center sections, steel hoops, trim rings and caps! All off the same 1965 Mustang that were installed by the dealer after being purchased by the ordering buyer.

These were just recently removed from that 1965 Mustang GT in favor of chrome styled wheels during a factory restoration. Apparently the original owner Day 2-ed this car on Day 1.

The story I got was that Dorothy was a newly minted college grad and she and her Dad went to order her a shiny new Mustang. And Dad was apparently a cool cat as he sprung for the GT and a set of shiny mags for her ride. She kept the car throughout her adult life and her heirs recently sold it and it is undergoing a factory restoration to stock. As I understand it, the wheels were the only deviation from stock over the years. She never completely stopped driving the car, it had never sat as I was told but she may've driven it longer into her retirement than was safe - for the fenders, garage doors and trim rings... It was a cool story. A lifelong SoCal car.

Anyway, here they are as I found them, any blue goo you see in the photos (and I will upload a lot for the whole story) is a polishing compound that the resto shop helper / detailer took to the center sections to try and clean them up. I haven't touched them except to look for casting marks / numbers.

The trim rings are curb scuffed for sure and would need restoring - I'm not sure how they are removed, but they appear to have similar looking clips to our beloved rally wheel trim rings... and they look to go around the five spokes - I tried to show the detail in the photos. They are beat from being curbed. But likely restorable / rechrome-able.

The aluminum is not hardly corroded at all and will certainly clean up very well - there's none of that typical two-metal corrosion at the hub where they mounted. The caps are pitted, a couple more than the others.

They are 14" diameter of course, and likely 6" wide but I haven't dismounted Dot's last set of white walls she had installed years ago to confirm, nor do I know what the inside / bead looks like, but I have no doubt these are perfect inside.

I haven't washed them or tried to remove the road debris or brake dust or grim, just looked for markings on the inside.

They appear to be stamped 4 C 1 A 9

They have the HURST logo casting along with HARVEY Aluminum, the manufacturer, I presume.

They are Ford 5 on 4 1/2 or 5X4.5 bolt pattern MOPAR & AMC too maybe?

Original wheel weights are on there - including a MICRO 1oz wing weight

The original DILL 627 valve stem caps are all present too.

I received 18 lug nuts, two were lost in the trunk I was told and the four Gorilla wheel locks that she installed in the 80s after apparently too much interest in the wheels was shown by the neighborhood riffraff - her words supposedly.

Anyway, not much more can be said about these - but we're all sure of how rare it is to come across a full set and I'm going to assume the 4.5" pattern is harder to find, if not less desirable though...

----I have a friend that bought a set of 4 1/2 Hursts and offset drilled them the 1/8th inch, then overdrilled them and machined sleeves for the holes. I never actually saw them but he claimed it worked just fine!.....Bill S

Hurst wheels are very similar to 68-70 Shelby wheels. Alloy center with chrome rims.

Paradise Wheels in CA does restorations and reproductions of all the Shelby wheels. Kelsey Hays Mag Stars, early Cragars, 10 spokes and the 69-70's.

OK Gang, I broke these wheels down.

beads perfect, as expected!

Steel trim rings are sturdy and can certainly be refinished / polished / rechromed.

The cleanest wheel in the pics was after literally 90 seconds of water and scrubbing.

There was / is 50 years of road grime and brake dust on these, but they will clean up perfectly, IMHO!

NO RUST, dings to the wheels or anything - they spin true; tire shop tested them.

(I sold the DILL 627 caps and all weights already)

I will reinstall the beauty rings to ship.

Still AWESOME wheels - looking to rehome them ASAP.

These 5X4.5 bolt pattern rims will look great on a Day Two Ford, MoPar, or AMC.
