This charming 1964 ½ Ford Mustang Coupe is a rare and matching numbers example of an early classic pony car. As a combination of the VIN and Data Plate indicate this car was built in Dearborn, MI on May 21st 1964 as a 1965 Ford Mustang Hardtop “Coupe” which is recognized as a 1964 ½ model. It was ordered with a Guardsman Blue exterior, White Vinyl with Blue trim interior, 260 V8 engine, C-4 automatic transmission and 3.00:1 standard differential rear end. From the information gathered it was also equipped with the following options: back up lights, WS knock off hub covers, 6.50x14 tires, AM Radio, console and power steering. It was shipped to the Richmond, VA district where it was retailed new. The ownership history is unknown until it was discovered for sale at the Carlisle Collector Car Flea Market and Corral located in Carlisle, PA in 2009. It was purchased by a gentleman named Stephen Shpock who lives in Montoursville, PA. Stephen’s father worked for The Ford Motor Company at the factory in Metuchen, NJ factory so he was a Ford enthusiast from a young age. When Stephen discovered this car at Carlisle he knew it was special because it was a matching numbers 1964 ½ Ford Mustang Hardtop with desirable options. He collaborated with a local restorer in 2010 to undergo a complete restoration. His vision was to restore the car the way it was originally built from Ford. He salvaged as many of the original parts as possible. He also sourced as many original and correct parts as possible. The restoration was completed in 2012 which resulted in a beautiful example. Stephen enjoyed the car for the next ten years before selling it to MS CLASSIC CARS in October of 2022. This is the first time MS CLASSIC CARS has offered it for sale.

The exterior of this car looks gorgeous with its timeless design and beautiful color. From the information gathered the body retains most of its original sheet metal. It was noted that the rear quarters were replaced during the restoration. The 1964 ½ Mustangs were outfitted with a more rounded edge around the hood. The body is straight with overall good fitment throughout. It was repainted in its original factory color of Guardsman Blue. This is a rare and very desirable color among first generation Mustang enthusiasts. The paint is show quality throughout and has recently been detailed to a brilliant shine. The front windshield, vent glass and rear quarter glass was replaced new. The door glass and rear window is original Car-Lite stamped. Everything on the exterior was restored or replaced such as the glass stainless trim, wiper arms and blades, antenna, driver’s side mirror, front grill, Ford headlights, front bumper, parking light bezels and lights, emblems, door handles, rear quarter trim, lower rocker moldings, tail light bezels and lenses, gas cap, rear bumper, reverse light bezels and lenses. The 1964 ½ Mustangs didn’t have a cable on the gas cap. The car sits perfectly on 14” steel wheels with the correct spinner hub caps with Mustang in the center. The wheels are wrapped with new US Royal Safety 800 6.95x14 whitewall 4-ply tires that were added by MS CLASSIC CARS.

The interior of this car also looks gorgeous with its timeless design and complementary color combination. It was re-finished in its original factory colors of White Vinyl with Blue trim. Everything in the interior has been restored or replaced such as the headliner (which does show some wrinkles), sun visors and brackets, rear view mirror, dash pad, dash, black gauge bezel and gauges, dash knobs, dash temperature controls, radio, black glove box door with emblem, steering wheel, door sills, door panels and arm rests, door handles, window cranks, bucket seats with trim, front seat belts, rear seat, center console, shifter, pedals and carpeting. Everything in the interior is in working order with exception of the original AM radio. The trunk compartment was nicely restored and painted body color. It was outfitted with a correct style trunk mat and matching full spare tire with jack.

The engine compartment is nicely detailed throughout with many correct parts and stickers. It was repainted in the correct shade of black on the firewall, inner fenders and radiator support. The driver’s side inner fender retains its original factory VIN stamping. The car is powered by its original born with 260 V8 that was completely rebuilt during the restoration process. The engine casting number is #C40E-6015B and the date casting is #4C16 which is March 16th, 1964. The engine was repainted in the correct shade of black and blue valve covers. It’s equipped with a correct factory Autolite 2-bbl carburetor, blue air cleaner and black radio resistance wires. The new battery has been outfitted with an Autolite battery topper. The engine is cooled by a new correct style radiator. The engine breathes through factory manifolds and new exhaust system. The engine is coupled to the original born with C-4 automatic transmission that was completely rebuilt during the restoration process. The transmission case casting number is #C4AP-7006-B and the tail shaft number is #C4AP-7A04C-CBK. The power is transferred to the original born with rear end with 3.00 gears. The rear end tag is stamped WCZ-F 00 4EB 901. The car is equipped with original factory power steering.

The undercarriage is very clean throughout. When it was discovered it had undercoating so the undercoating was left during the restoration process. It was recently lightly resprayed to enhance the appearance. Everything underneath has been restored or replaced such as the fuel tank and lines, steering components, suspension components and braking system.

Finding a 1964 ½ Ford Mustang Hardtop “Coupe” is becoming tougher and tougher. Finding a restored matching numbers example with this color combination and drivetrain is extremely tough. This is the perfect car for someone who’s looking for a super nice driver that can be enjoyed for the years to come. This is where the Mustang started!
