Default Chevelle 300 Coupe

The economy 300 Deluxe Coupe came with varying options and power plants. Members Dan V put together this display at MCACN, and Diego Rosenberg spotlighted these special cars in this article, defined how they came to be and their histories. Gotta love Al's 300 sleeper. Congratulations to all the owners !!!!

Thanks Steve

I am always honored to put together wonderful showcases each year at MCACN.
2019 was especially exciting to showcase my Family of 1969 SS396 300 Deluxe Post Sedan Chevelle owners....and Albert’s ZL1 300 Deluxe.

Diego did a great job with the article.

See you all in 2020.

Dan

x2. I now have that printed out to display with all the other info about my Post Sedan.

You also do a great job to promote and showcase these largely unknown and/or misunderstood vehicles, Dan

Default Chevelle 300 Coupe

These vehicles were rushed into production and built by Chevrolet in 1969 to compete against the 1968 Plymouth Roadrunner which was very successfully marketed by Chrysler as a No Frills, low end (costwise), high performance musclecar that was affordable to the less affluent by deleting any unnecessary options and weight.

Chrysler was very successful with the concept, not only because of the concept itself, but the use of catchy model names and clever marketing. Chevrolet was not successful because they continued to use only the SS396 moniker, and buyers were already accustomed to that equating with a more well appointed model (Malibu based). Hence, the one-year-only availability.

I don't know if I'd characterize it like that. There was no "rush" any more than the Fairlane Cobra or Cyclone CJ were rushed.

And, IMHO, it wasn't about deleting unnecessary options and weight as much as offering a certain performance benchmark at a particular price point. Sure, some options like buckets would be considered unnecessary to achieve that, but weight was not a factor in the creation of these cars.

What's strange about the Chevys is that they came mandatory with mag wheels.
