1969 camaro 140 mph speedometer question
I have a friend who says that he has seen a 69 camaro 140 mph speedometer that has a kph scale on the inside of the regular 140 mph scale. I have said that I have never heard of the dual scale. Did the export cars use a dual scale or a single kph scale? The topic came up in one of our conversations on the phone and I wanted to ask the experts on this site if anyone has heard of one like that.

Re: 1969 camaro 140 mph speedometer question
Speedometers are MPH or KPH, not both, and are labeled as such.

Re: 1969 camaro 140 mph speedometer question
I'd like to see that..
I had a canadian friend tell me the same, and am still waiting for him to supply a photo of what he saw at a car show recently. I doubt in '69 the factory made something like that..Coulda been a recent aftermarket Co. that made one to resemble a stock appearing one. My '84 camaro had a dual coded speedometer. |

Re: 1969 camaro 140 mph speedometer question
If you have "The 1969 Camaro Reference Book" there is a side by side photo of 200 KPH and 140 MPH on page 335.
There is an aftermarket 160 MPH speedo, featured in the April 2011 Car Craft.

Re: 1969 camaro 140 mph speedometer question
Yes...not questioning the single KPH,but if both were used on same face in '69 like on my '84.

Re: 1969 camaro 140 mph speedometer question
William: I looked at the two featured on page 335 in "The 69 Camaro Reference Book" and from what I understand it is two scales similar to what Mr 70 posted only for a 69 camaro 140 mph on the outside and the kph scale is on the inside. He is sharp enough to see an obvious poor "repo" 140 mph speedo, he said it looked like a real one and he was wondering if it was something used in Canada and he mentioned it to me because I live in Minnesota and he thought that I may have seen one like it. I appreciate your help as I have been into 69 Camaros since I purchased a 69 Z/28 in 1972 and it is all new to me.

Re: 1969 camaro 140 mph speedometer question
Growing up in Canada nothing was Metric here until the mid 70's and I believe the dual Kph/Mile Speedo heads first showed up on GM products in '74 w/ the 1975 model year cars?.
Although Canada officially adopted the Metric system a few years earlier, Metric was confusingly jammed down our throats at school starting about 1973 and its use implemented across the land over the next few years.. The only cool thing at the time was seeing our new road signs like Speed Limit 100!. ~ Pete

Re: 1969 camaro 140 mph speedometer question
Thanks Pete, I am not sure of this that he spoke of. It sounds like some kind of incorrect repo speedo. My issue is that I have never seen or heard of anything like it and where would the market be for something like that? I appreciate your imput on this issue.

The 140 was configured in the same manner as the standard 120. The inside scale is 1 MPH increments. It is not KPH.
