Advice on selling a car to Canada resident
My son is selling a car to a resident of Canada. The guy's feedback and email on google seem legit. He is going to send a cashiers or bank check (to be verified) and wants the title sent to a Canadian check point 72 hours before he plans to pick up the car. I've never heard of that and I'm looking for advice from someone thats done this. -- George

Re: Advice on selling a car to Canada resident
I thought the Canadian officials wanted the title 48 hours prior to the car coming across? But either way 48 or 72, once your paid and have your paperwork in order, you should have no problem releasing the title?

Yes that is what has to be done. All the paperwork has to be at customs 72 hours ahead of the vehicle clearing the border.

Does it have to be the original paper work sent, or just faxed ?

Re: Advice on selling a car to Canada resident
Its the US customs that want the paperwork. They want to do lien and theft searches on the car before it leaves the country and they want it 72 hours before (sometimes it includes weekends, sometimes not, all the rules change all the time). They will then stamp the title that it has cleared US customs. You can fax it but call and confirm they have received it. I've gotten to the border before and they claim they never got it. What it was is that when they received it they couldn't read it 100% clearly so they just throw it in the garbage and don't inform anyone.

This can be up to 2 weeks. It can take a week before a fake bank check gets uncovered and you would be on the hook for the money and out a car and a title. |

Re: Advice on selling a car to Canada resident
thanx, he was already advised that the funds would need to be verified, he's plastered all over the internet on various web sites and seems to be an upstanding guy. Paypal deposit already rec'd also.
