Yes, it has the ground strap. Did not try a test light on the tach lead; may do so tomorrow evening.

Old thread. But, thought I would share what the problem was.
In my initial thread, I stated that I had tried a new pick up. Apparently not. I may have replaced the pick up in one of the distributors, but not in the one I ended up using. It finally died completely, and I found a brand new one still in the box in one of my tool boxes. Replaced it, and it cured the no spark issue. Funny that for so long, it ran fine after cranking long enough, and then one day it just died. Just glad it happened at the house instead of while out on the road, with a load. Running as well as it ever did.

Are you verifying that there is no spark or is the engine just not starting. Carb issues could have it flooded out with gas which would make it hard to start until you cranked it long enough to clear the flooded fuel out.

Definitely no spark. Had Sherri crank it while I had a screwdriver in #1 plug wire close to ground. Had to crank for a good 20 or 30 sec to get spark. At first I thought it was a fuel issue, so I ran and electric pump. Turn the key on and wait for the carb bowl to fill. I still do that.
The new pick up cured the spark issue.
