Opinions on this Suede Paint...
What do you guys think about the suede paint on this dash... does it look pretty close to the original texture?

Re: Opinions on this Suede Paint...
I think it looks pretty good, I thought that it may not be a flat enough sheen, the texture looks damn close though... I am going to compare it to the original on the dash of my 68 GTO...

I have to say that that looks pretty close to what I have done on my Nova. LOOKS GOOD!

Re: Opinions on this Suede Paint...
Old post, I know. Do you want to share how that texture was achieved?
If not, then can one of you restoration guru's share? I am getting ready to paint the dash on my 69 Camaro. |

Nobody is trying to replicate the suede paint look?

Usually a texture additive mixed into the paint.

Re: Opinions on this Suede Paint...
This was an ongoing process and took a little experimentation.
Here is what I did... but I would suggest you spray some test panels before jumping off the deep end. I used a textured rustoleum paint spray can available at Lowes for the suede effect. Initially it was too rough and had what in my opinion was a little too much sheen. SO I sprayed (from a gun) FLAT black over the top which filled in the pits a little and evened out sheen... (I didn't take any photos of this yet)

Re: Opinions on this Suede Paint...
There is definately a bit of gloss to the original dash paint, the texture cuts down the potential glare. Its definately not flat black on the original cars. Remember, the package tray surround metal is painted with the same finish (corner metal screws painted in place).

Re: Opinions on this Suede Paint...
I went to the paint store and had them mix up some lacquer with the texture in it. Not too much. I then sprayed primer over top of it to "smooth" it out a bit. Then sprayed a semi-flat over top of that. It is a bit of a process, but if you want that look and texture. You have to go the extra mile. Why don't that have that actual suede additive anymore?
