This Is Why Christmas Colors Are Red and Green

Today, the Christmas season is just as synonymous with the colors red and green as it is with Santa Claus, caroling, and having to spend time with unwanted family members, but the truth is this wasn’t always the case. Believe it or not, there was once a time when holiday cards would feature the colors blue and white just as often as they would red and green. That all changed in 1931, courtesy of the world’s most popular soda maker.

“That’s when Coca-Cola hired an artist to create a Santa Claus,” Arielle Eckstut, co-author of The Secret Language of Color, explained to NPR. “They had done this before, but this particular artist created a Santa Claus that we associate with the Santa Claus today in many ways.”

The artist that Coca-Cola hired was Haddon Sundblom, and his Santa Claus was unlike anything seen before. According to Eckstut, the artist’s Kris Kringle was “fat and jolly—whereas before he was often thin and elf-like—and he had red robes. The fact that all these things came together—this friendly, fat Santa in these bright red robes… this really took a hold in American culture.” And the background color the artist chose was green.

It snowed for the first time here in Albuquerque (this season) late last night. About an inch - it melted away this morning. Very rare to get snow here this early in the season. So I am in denial . . . making believe it's still summer. No beaches here . . . no bodies of water either. Big change from when we moved from Ft. Lauderdale.

You might think with the number of golden arches you see that McDonald’s is the fast food chain with the most franchises around the world.

But it turns out that distinction belongs to another chain: Subway. According to CNBC, the sandwich franchise operated 43,912 stores around the globe in 2017. McDonald’s wasn’t far behind, however, with 37,241 franchises. In third place? Relative newcomer Starbucks, with 27,339.

SpaceX is ready to deploy 64 satellites in one fell swoop — a record-setting mission.

Elon Musk's company is scheduled to launch a rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California on Monday between 1:32 pm and 2 pm ET after a series of delays triggered by bad weather and last-minute inspections for the rocket. It will be one of the largest satellite ride-sharing missions ever launched, and the most crowded single mission in US history, according to Spaceflight, SpaceX's customer for the launch.
