Charley's 67 pace car is the first factory built 67 L78. And yes the engineering department later configured it to a L35/L34.

Re: early build 396 375HP 67 camaro?
That is way too early for an L78 camaro. IIRC the first L78 camaro's were late march 67 and were 4P coded. Very few received the 4P before the 4K was introduced.

Charley, I knew the Byrne Bros. dealership back in the day...they were a huge retailer. They sold many performance cars and were big in hi-po parts, as well. They closed around 1983 and Tim Byrne carried on for many years in Mt. Kisco with T.A. Byrne Chevrolet...Jerry Roberts was their hi-performance guy in parts, every hot rod Chevy guy knew him.

Announcement to dealers about the new L78 option being available was made March 17th, 1967 in a two page letter.

It truely is a small world. I now the orig. owner to that Camaro. His shop was about a half mile from my house. His son still runs the it. Sandy use to run with the Orig. owner to Calebs COPO back in the day. Sandy's son John helped me find the Orig. owner to that COPO. Thats AWESOME!

Re: early build 396 375HP 67 camaro?
Very cool L78, race car.
On another note, one of the local muscle car manufacturers is making up an L78 Camaro ragtop. Engine date and stamp look possible. However, the 4K trim tag is months before the first L78 Camaros. The scammers are still at work.....buyers beware. |
