The long way home.
In '05 I was looking for a high horsepower purple rag. I was thinking Mopar when a '67 Royal Plum L78 Camaro was offered. That's my favorite year for Camaros so I was interested. I flew to Detroit to see and drive it. Overall it seemed like a good car with original engine. There was a problem with the quarters but I planned to fix them when repainting the car. The tag had been off and stripped but I was assured it was original. I compared other vins and body numbers on LA cars and these lined up. I bought the car and began researching the history. Richard Maksym had bought it out of Hemmings in '95. The phone numbers weren't working so I posted here and Team Camaro for leads. Nothing.
Last year I finally put the car in the shop for new paint. We addressed the quarters first but it was slow going until a few weeks ago when I found out that what appeared to be original paint was found on the windshield frame and it wasn't purple. It was a sick feeling to now question everything. Work stopped. Shortly after while in Mexico I got a call from Charley about a response to my post on Team Camaro. At first I didn't know what he was talking about since it had been so long but Kurt S had posted an eBay sale of an identical tt with the exception of the color which was y. The color found on my car was yellow. I contacted the seller who happened to be the seller of the car in '95 and had purchased it himself in '89. He looked up the tt buyer's number for me and I was able to contact him. I now possess the original tag for my car. Yellow isn't purple but I'm happy to know the truth. Many thanks to Kurt for his efforts and to Charley for alerting me and to the ebay seller and buyer for their amazing help. |

Re: The long way home.
Good to see you got the original trim tag back. Did you have to buy it off ebay??
I take it you figured out who changed the tag.

Re: The long way home.
It's nice when it works out every once in a while. Congrats Phil. My 67 RS/SS was butternut yellow with a black hat. Very cool combination when done correctly.

Re: The long way home.
That is the best ending to a tag swap story possible. The car was an original L78 car with a tag swap for color. I think times have changed.

Re: The long way home.
Jonesy, I got the tag back from the person who bought it on Ebay. When he realized the tag was off my car he sent it to me with no compensation. I tried to pay him but he refused. I think he paid around $200 for it. From the info I've received it sounds like the tag was switched in the 80s. Pretty remarkable.

Re: The long way home.
Wow Phil, that's a great thing the buyer of the tag did. I saw the story and how it went on Camaros.net.
Its amazing how things came together. I like Royal Plum but I could also live with Butternut Yellow if that was my car. Either way I wouldn't be disappointed.
