I agree with this direction, I did that to a 68 L-78/M-22 Chevelle and it worked excellent and only you know what has been done.

Re: Yenko Nova Shifter question?
Don commented several times that he did not like gear noise in an M22 for a street driven car.. Some may have come back later for an upgrade. I am currently tracking a Chevelle that came back several times for engine replacement..including a ZL1..teenage driver and Dad had lots of money to indulge his son !

Re: Yenko Nova Shifter question?
Yep -- they were a bit noisy ... from the "straight cut" gears I believe. There was no doubt what tranny you were running.

Re: Yenko Nova Shifter question?
A friend of mine is a retired mechanic from Ed Stinn's and told me a story about two brothers that ordered LS6 Chevelles in 70 from the dealership. The one brother ordered a 4 speed and the other an automatic. The 4 speed car had the rock crusher in it and the guy brought it back to the dealership several times insisting there was something wrong with the trans due to the whining of the gears.
My friend said that the dealership tried to explain to the guy that was how those trannys were but he refused to listen. He said the dealership ended up replacing the trans with an M21 instead just to satisfy the guy. He said the M22 out of the Chevelle sat on a bench in the dealership for several years until another mechanic took it for a project car he was building. He said there was absolutely NOTHING wrong with that trans... Rich

Re: Yenko Nova Shifter question?
Funny thing about that alleged gear noise in the M22 (by the way every 1971 and 1972 four speed Trans Am came with an M22).
The gear whine sounds just like the Mopar A833 18-spline "hemi" transmission. When I first got my Trans Am on the road I thought something was wrong with the M22 because it was so quiet - I was so used to the loud A833 tranny in my old Hemi Charger that I was expecting some sort of "gravel in a blender" sound to come from a real M22. When I had someone familiar with M22s listen to my tranny he said it sounded just like every other M22 he had heard. My response was: "So that's what all the hoopla is about???" |

I have a M22 in my 69 Nova SS 396 375hp. My wife loves the whining. When the wife's happy I am happy.

Re: Yenko Nova Shifter question?
The early M-22 made more whine and rattle prior to late 1970 ... 71's and later were quieter for what ever reason.

It is always better to have the whining come from the transmission rather than from your wife
