Rivian will delay production of its 400-mile long-range electric trucks until 2023 to focus on the 314-mile standard-range versions.

For those not in Michigan - the Secretary of State allows the use of "same year/vintage" plates on historic vehicles. Cost is a one time fee of $35 and the plate is assigned to the vehicle for life.

The normal "historic" plate has an antique carriage on it and is therefore not that appropriate for a muscle machine, at least in my mind.

Allowing the use of a same year/vintage plate is a wonderful and uncharacteristically liberal policy and I am grateful; I have a same year plate on each of my collector cars.

I mention it here because only "normal" plates are allowed; specialty plates like dealer plates - or manufacturer plates - are not allowed.

Unless one happens to slip them under the radar...

Default same year tag

Ky. allows you to have a same year as car plate if your car is registered as an antique (25 years old or older). You must keep your antique plates in the car but they don't have to be displayed. Ky. tags are county specific so guys find an old plate with their county name on it.

Ohio is, or was, like that, too.

My college roommate worked for New Departure Hyatt in Sandusky and had access to GM company owned vehicles. He was driving a company car one time with an Ohio manufacturer plate, which was stamped "Special" in the location where the county information normally appears.

A woman stopped him while he was putting gas in it, and she said: "...ya know, I've lived in Ohio my whole life but I'll be dipped if I know where 'Special County' is...."

Michigan plates back in the day were also assigned by county, but it is not widely known and you have to have the secret decoder to make sure you have the right county.

MN USED to be good about vintage plates, but they make more money with all their specialty plates and keep taking back the vintage sequences to use on the specialty plates. Plates are based on value in MN and it's not unusual for the specialty plate for a $60k car/truck to run $600/yr.
