After 9 years of abuse....my Hays Street/Strip clutch has had enough.

The bad news is, Hays doesn’t make that clutch kit anymore but I purchased a slightly used Hays pressure plate, the same as I had in the car and new Ram 310M organic disc. The disc took hours/days to decide what would work best for my application. I want a clutch that is streetable but will work at the track. I HATE clutch chatter. That was the main reason I stayed with an organic disc. Too may people get a dual friction disc and the first complaint is clutch chatter when in traffic, backing up or just trying to load up on a trailer.

I took the flywheel in yesterday to get resurfaced. I should have it back Monday or Tuesday. No damage was done to the flywheel as I took everything apart before the disc was down to the rivets.

Meanwhile, I'm cleaning parts and getting everything ready to reinstall.......and trying to sell parts to pay for everything!!!

I've been running Hays myself and still have one NIB for another car. Also have a RAM and there's nothing wrong with those either. In fact, they're a great choice to replace the Hays.

Well...this hasn’t gone as planned, I installed the Hays pressure plate that I purchased off eBay and it was a dud.....hardly any foot pressure so it wouldn’t hold. I did get a full refund.

Then, after a lot of research, I ordered a McLeod diaphragm pressure plate. They claim it’s good for 450-500 horsepower.....it isn’t. Right away, I noticed the foot pressure is lighter than the original Hays I removed. I’ve driven it a couple times and it slips when shifting hard. It definitely does not have the clamping pressure that the Hays had.

I’m going to go on a cruise tomorrow......and if I have issues, I’m contacting McLeod to see what the heck I’m going to do.....very frustrating as it’s a lot of work.

Just a thought, but did McLeod offer any tech advise? If you run an organic disc on both sides and it slips, and then you install a lighter pressure plate....well, that doesn't help. The lighter pressure plates are for a puk design, which would be the McLeod Super Street Pro disc. I'm really surprised this wasn't brought to your attention. The Centerforce DF is pretty much the same clutch set as the SSP.

This is the pressure plate I purchased.

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/MCL-360801

It has a static pressure of 3200 pounds....the Hays had a 3000 pound.....it should hold. There shouldn’t be a problem at all. Like I said, if it doesn’t do what it should be doing on our ride tomorrow, I’ll be contacting McLeod.

UPDATE: I contacted McLeod and they want me to send back the pressure plate to make sure I received the correct one as they have two.....one is a 2400 pound and the other is a 3200 pound.......which is what I ordered. The bad part is.....I have to go through all the work of removing it again (4th time) to send it back to California so they can test it! UGH

Kurt, sorry I didn't see this sooner.

I used Ram Powergrip HD in my old '61 Pontiac. Has a stroked 409 to 474 and made around 575Hp best we can calculate. NEVER missed a beat in 4 years on the street. BUT also never tried it with a slick.

Or maybe look at just the Ram Powergrip.....
