Default Maui wildfires

Anyone else watching this devastation ? My wife and I honeymooned on Maui 28 years ago and were looking to return next year. We stayed in the Lahaina area with it's historic whaling port and downtown that had most of the buildings on the Historic Registry. ALL that is gone now, burned to the ground. We bought a local artist's print of an oil painting he did from a gallery on main street and had it framed by a well known framer who lived near Haleakala and had it shipped home later.
All the homes of the people who worked and lived in that town are gone too, they have nothing left.

Some of the first churches built on Maui in the early 1800s with cemeteries of the native royalties have burned as well and the historic grave markers with them.

The town, also, is home to a famous 100 year old Banyan tree that covered an entire city block, which people are afraid has been destroyed as well.

Just gut wrenching for us to see this and have a connection to the town. Too much of a reminder of Hurricane Ian that destroyed so much of the Fort Meyer area and our vacation rental we had reserved on Pine Island for this past February less than a year ago.

I honeymooned there also. Bought some old maps from a lady that had them framed and sent to us. Must have been 27 years ago now. Didnt last as long as yours!
I tried to by a 69 Z28 off pine island about 2012. That guy had been there before it got real popular and was just a block house and garage. The bar and grill at the end of his street sure had good fish. I doubt it is still there. Woodys was the name of it

Sure looks like an inferno on the island

The Eastern side of Pine Island didn't get as devastated as the west, but still had severe flooding. The apartment we had reserved was on ground floor. Uninhabitable after and no insurance available for that level, as the home had to be built on stilts and anything built on the ground was the homeowners problem.
We are booked in a stilt home in Homosassa for the coming Feb. We may run down there for a day just to ogle and buy a few things to support their economy.
We have old neighbors in Cape Coral, who did get some minor flooding and wind damage and she has sent me pics of the damage and how much is still not cleaned up or repaired in that whole area. Many people and business's lost everything in that disaster too. We know that from Ms. Gibb losing her home and possessions.

Wow, I hope they are OK too. From what I read, no power or cell service, so it's going to be a while before those are restored. I'll be hoping for their safety too.

What a tragedy, prayers to everyone on the island. My girlfriend and I spent a week in Lahaina in April of 2022 to celebrate our 50th birthday's and it was amazing. She just got off her computer and showed me the pictures of the area we stayed and everything is gone.

Very sad and tragic. Some people had to jump in the ocean to get away from the heat and flames. It looks apocalyptic.

We honeymooned there 38 years ago and were planning on going back for our 40th. This is so terrible I can't even imagine what some of the family's and businesses are going through. God bless them.

I am heartbroken, my favorite community in HI. Prayers and sympathies for those who are enduring this tragedy. - Bill W

my brother got a hold of me and said they had to evacuate and then were able to return only to have to leave again. said the historic tree downtown he heard had perished. cant remember but seems like it was over 150 years old. i remember having to stand by it as a teenager and have my picture taken.
