Default Chevy Truck fuel pump that lasts?

I'm on the aide of the road right now waiting for a buddy. This is my 3rd fuel pump failure.

2001 2500hd w/ 8.1.

Original pump failed at 60k

replaced with a Delco module and thay lasted another 60k (120 total miles)

replaced with another OE module and that now that got me another 136k (256 total)

Guy I work with has a 2000 Toyota Landcruiser with 450k and the fuel pump is original?

Anyone know of a pump manufactuer that will.last on a Chevy?

Made it off the NE extension of the Pa Turnpike and back to Glenside. My buddy never flat towed before but he did great! We were running around 55 and even managed traffic well. Wish I could have taken a pic.

I'm thinking a Denso pump module may be a good choice since they are OE for some Toyotas.

Denso® 953-0028 - Fuel Pump Module Assembly

Denso Replacement Fuel

Does anyone have any experience with these? I trust there are a few guys who own a chevy truck here, right? Anyone ever have to replace a fuel pump?

In my experience, stick with the AC Delco OEM module assembly. They are constantly being up-dated. We have had problems with the Denso made pumps. We installed 3 Denso pumps in a Chrysler Town and Country mini van in 1 month before we got a good one. The first one failed 2 blocks from my shop after the customer picked it up. Its today's fuel we are forced to sell that tears them up no matter who makes them.

Thanks Bill. I'm disappointed that I have to set such low expectations of the pump. My buddy' Land cruiser runs the same fuel ( we use Sunoco gas with a company card) and his holds up. What is the difference?

I change the filter about every 25-30k.

Paul,

How low do you run the tank before refilling on a regular basis?

It makes a huge difference. While pumps should last more than 60-70k, they are only as good as how they are treated. The ground may not be as good as it should be. That will raise the amperage in the pump and shorten it's life from an electrical standpoint.

The Delco should be fine. We sell Delphi, Bosch, Airtex, Carter, etc. The Delphi's make up a fair amount of our GM module business. We have had a good amount of success with them (but far from perfect). I would not be surprised if the Delphi, Delco, and Denso are all the same pump. Denso is doing QUITE a bit of manufacturing for Delphi and Delco.

Hope this helps a little.

Tim

NEVER drop the fuel level further than a quarter tank -- fuel cools these pumps and heat kills em'... TAZ

Thanks Tim. I may run an extra ground. The 8.1 has me putting fuel in it about every 250-300 miles which about 24-48 hrs. But i do run it low, but usually not enough to turn the low fuel lamp on.

Sorry to hear of your troubles Paul.
When the pumps fail, have you tried giving the tank a kick w/ ignition on as sometimes they'll fire up again and get you home.
And whether it works or not, the kicking action somehow helps a fella feel better anyway?
Good luck!

That may be it Paul. I don't like tanks getting under 1/3 of a tank. It just cannot cool the pump the way it should be. Check the wiring harness. That pump may get grounded through the ECM. Best of luck Paul!
