Default 1969 Chevelle plastic inner fenders

I bought a '69 SS 396 project car that I will likely restore someday. It is an Oct. '68 build.

It has plastic inner fenders. Appears to be all original front end. I did not know they did plastic inner fenders on these. Is this correct? When did they switch to steel? Also, does anyone reproduce the plastic ones as mine have cracks where they bolt to the outer fender around the wheel openings. Thanks

Yes, some cars came with plastic inner fenders. AMD carries the repop plastic.

My 69 Chevelle SS 396, March built Baltimore. Came with plastic. I believe it was a plant thing of weather they used plastic or metal.

Paul,

I have restored many '69 Chevelles....Unless you are planning a 100% concourse show car that must be all original and you are not going to drive it....I would not restore the plastic inner fenders....find yourself a set of steel inner fenders....the plastic ones will crack again and again. Note: The repop steel inner fenders are not like the originals - a trained eye can spot them immediately.

No one is currently making repop inner fenders - if they were, they would most certainly be - well you know

There have even been a few documented 69 Chevelles that came with one plastic and one steel inner fender.

Back in the late-80s my parents had a frost green Malibu hardtop 250hp/350, PS, PB, AC. I can't say for sure that things had not been changed before they got it, but it looked unmolested and seemed to have original sheet metal. The pass side was plastic and the driver side was steel. I just assumed that one had been changed at one time, but maybe not?

One of the hardest parts to restore on a Chevelle are the plastic inner fenders. Nobody makes accurate ones, and the NOS ones I have found are in no way close to the factory installed parts. As Dan said, even once repaired, they crack from body flex etc easily...BKH

I've used the metal repop infers before with good results. These must be test fit and a few holes elongated but will look fine and function well. As Dan said, these are noticeable to the trained eye, but much less troublesome than trying to repair cracked plastic ones.
