Default Upper Alternator Bracket for '67 L78 Chevelle Same as Camaro?

I bought a set of alternator brackets from Ground Up a long time ago, but as I get closer to my '67 L78 engine build, I'm learning that some of the parts I have aren't the best choice, or they are not correct for a '67 BBC, such as the upper alternator bracket.

In '66 this bracket had a small bracket welded on for the throttle return spring, however this return spring bracket was eliminated for 1967 Big Blocks, as the throttle return spring went to the rear and attached to the coil bracket. Of course the repro I have has the return spring bracket and it's not correct for my build.

I found a nice bracket on ebay that says it's a correct GM Replacement for a 1967 Big Block Camaro, but it says nothing about being also good for a Chevelle. It looks exactly the same. The seller says the manufacturer doesn't list that bracket he sells for the Chevelle however.

Well, now I know mistakes are made, and often research needs to be done to get what's right. But I tend to think a Big Block '67 Chevelle & a '67 Big Block Camaro would share many of the same parts.

I've also read that some of the repros don't have the heavier steel like what the original brackets had, so I'm leaning toward this GM authorized '67 Big Block Camaro bracket for my build.

Any thoughts?

Thanks for any input on this!

John

Hi John.

I would think they’re the same between A body & F body.

Give me five minutes to go dig some out of my stash, BRB.

Hey again, I have several original GM ones - both with the return spring bracket and without.

Here are photos of both designs.

PM me with any interest in the no-bracket one for your '67 build.

I'm sure others will chime in here too.

Cheers.

Thanks for the replies, but I'm gonna just buy a GM authorized replacement part (#3884508) and it won't have the throttle return spring extra tab, which would be correct for '67. It should also have thicker steel stock like original. GM changed the design for a reason, and imo it was because the throttle return spring can interfere with things when it goes to the front. It's wide open to the rear (to the coil bracket), and that's much better. This is just one of those things that the repro companies either don't know any better or they purposely don't say anything so they'll sell more! Buyer Beware still holds true today!

1967 Chevelle 396 upper alt bracket was 3884508. Same # is shown in the Camaro AIM as well. So same part. No spring bracket on 67's.
