Any tractor mechanics here?

Hoping someone can help.

This is my first time splitting a tractor and replacing the clutch.

Tractor is a compact made in Japan tractor from the 70's.

7.25 inch clutch discs, one for the main clutch, another for the pto. Same as some old MF tractors, 3/4 inch 10 spline and 1 3/8 inch 19 spline.

You push the pedal in half way to disengage the main clutch and continue all the way down to disengage the PTO clutch.

There are no coil springs in this set up; just one large cone type spring.

So; here is my question: in the last pic, you can see a feeler gauge. I need to know how much free play needs to be in that area. There are three bolts like it; each with a lock nut at the bottom. There MUST be SOME free play, or the PTO clutch would not disengage.

I found a pic on line of a Kubota clutch that works on a similar principle. The free play on that one is .039". Because my old PTO clutch was in pieces, there was no way to measure what it was before disassembly.

Needed to get this back together today, so just chose a number. .050"

Figured that was enough for full release.

Got the tractor halves back together and the clutch pedal feels correct. Nice smooth motion half way down, then additional resistance as it disengages the second disc.

Won't be able to start it today, as I am in the middle of something else. Maybe tomorrow evening.

Thanks. Funny you are in Iowa. The guy I found to make my clutch disc is in Iowa.
He also had the correct release bearing and pilot bearing for this tractor.

Sorry I didnt see this until today. I have set many JD tractor clutches. The most important thing is to set them even which you did.

Tractor is all back together, all new fluids (4.5 gallons of 80/98 wt for the trans) and every thing is working perfectly.

Did not have to make any adjustments. Clutch has never worked this well.
