Default 69 Chevelle throttle cable info

I'm posting this for a fellow enthusiast who asked me for what I knew about these. I have not come across this in the past.

Looking for information on what kind of identification, if any, was reflected on the 69 Chevelle throttle cable. Chevelle build sheet guru Andy Martin has indicated that box 102 had varying information based on assembly plant. Most of the codes shown in that box were BRN, PUR, ORG, BLA, 7 or 6. Two plants had nothing at all in box 102. It makes sense the first few were actually colours. Have no idea about the 7 and 6.

My good buddy Woj recalls seeing some kind of colour tag or paint dab on a couple of original ones way back when. According to Woj, that tag or dab was put somewhere on the Black sleeve as shown in the picture below.

My understanding is that 1970's had a totally different ID setup.

If anybody can shed some light on this we would be most appreciative.

Don and I had a conversation yesterday regarding 69 throttle cables. I may not have relayed what I know correctly. I meant the entire sleeve that Don has "X"d in his photo would have the color. I snapped a few photos tonight to clarify this. I don't think a lot of original cables survived and all the new ones have black sleeves. I am not aware of 69s having any other stickers or codes on the cables.

The build sheets that I have copies of for 69 Chevelles are either blank, have a 7, or a color code as Don has noted. Not very standard, even for the same plants.

Here goes:

This is the one off my Malibu with L48, box 102 says ORG. That is the color of the sleeve of my original. The inner thin cable sleeve was broken, so I replaced it but kept the old one for reference.

Box102: ORG

The only markings visible on the original L48 cable:

This is the one off my L35 survivor car. It looks brown, but other L35 build sheets say purple. Too many years and the heat from where these cables live probably washed out the color. I don't have a build sheet for this car.

This is the one from a survivor L78 set up, too many years on this one too:

When I was fixing up my COPO Chevelle, the original cable, which I cannot find at the moment had a purplish color. I replaced the cable because of another broken inner sleeve, but I tried to duplicate the color on a new GM cable. FWIW. Yes, it is the wrong throttle cable bracket, but the correct one is on the shelf for the winter project list.

The old parts book has notes for the color of the cable (main outer sleeve):

Here's a photo of my COPO's engine compartment from 1970. It appears to have the original throttle cable and bracket. Notice the sleeve is a pinkish color.

I rechecked my build sheet images and listed the codes by assembly plant to see how they break out.

The Kansas City build sheets do not list any info in the box and generally have a lack of info.

the other plants (exc Oshawa) are below (Note: there are some engines missing from some of the plants due to a lack of build sheets found);
code assy plant Engine size
PUR Framingham L78
BRN Framingham Base 307
PUR Framingham L35
ORG Framingham L48
PUR Framingham L34

7 Baltimore L78
7 Baltimore L34
7 Baltimore L35
6 Baltimore Base 307

PUR Fremont L35
BLA Fremont L22- 6 cyl
ORG Fremont LM1
PUR Fremont L78

PUR Atlanta L34
PUR Atlanta L35

conclusions:

PUR is used at the Framingham, fremont, and Atlanta plants for all big block engines
7 is used at Baltimore for all big block engines
BRN is used at Framingham for base 307, likely 2 bbl carb
ORG is used at Framingham and Fremont for L48 and LM1 350 engines, likely 4 bbl carbs
6 is used at Baltimore for base 307, likely 2 bbl carb
BLA is likely the 6 cyl cable for all plants
Baltimore is the only plant that used the numbers-reason unknown

The colors mentioned in the parts manual shown in Woj's comment fit the info I have found in build sheets. Thanks for sharing that page. I must have missed the colors when I listed the part numbers in my excel. sheet.

Take care, Andy

Good summary Andy. I'm guessing that the pink on the COPO was really the purple that GM was referring to. I have that cable somewhere and the color is still not that far off. If I can find it, I will post it.

Dan,

I wish I had seen these pictures before I went over the car. I would have day-two'd it.
ORG letters are still on the firewall:

Great pictures Woj, appreciate it. Maybe I was listening to you in French rather than English

Interesting to see the 68 '396' had the same colour cable as the 69, but the part number was different. Probably the overall carb configurations were different between the two years as I would assume the carb part numbers would be different.

Your input is always useful Andy, thanks.

The "7" and "6" are still a mystery.
