Default Re: 1967 Fred Gibb sold, Dick Harrell Built Yenko

Both of these Yenko Harrell Gibb Camaros are incredible Super Cars.

Folklore had it that Fred Gibb did indeed sell 1967 Yenkos, but no one was able to confirm or at least publicly come out and prove that it was indeed the case until just a few years ago.

The fact that both of these cars exist / survived is amazing.

Years ago I had asked the Gibb ladies if they knew this to be fact and they were not able to confirm. I even asked them to see if any of the VINs in the 1967 ledger or police book matched the VINs on the known list of Yenko Camaros and I was told that there was no match.

Fast forward to Giordano's Pizza in St Charles, with Kim Howie and a few other sYc members and Kim tells me that the Gibb Harrell Yenkos which I had been sniffing around about did exist and that he knows the VIN numbers.

He tells me that they are indeed listed in the Gibb ledgers. I call B.S. as I was told there were no matches? Howie, says that we needed to look in the right place and that since the Camaros were sold in 1968, that they were listed in the 1968 Ledger not the '67.

The first car surfaced on Craigs list and I got a call from Chad the guy who found it, telling me that he thought he found a special car which might be a "NicKey" Camaro.

It was the Wednesday or Thursday before MCACN and I told him that at the asking price or less, I didn't see a big downside, even if it was just a Black/Red L78 Camaro and told him to call me back the week after the show............

I must say that once the Gibb ladies knew the cars in question that they did remember both of the original owners of the cars as well as that they did sit side by side on the Gibb Chevrolet showroom floor.

Yes, you did stick me with the bill. Thanks : )

This car has an interesting history. The car and Howie go back to May of 1968. I don't think too many people even knew it was a Yenko back then. The big deal was that it was a Dick Harrell prepped 427 Camaro. The general buying public did not know or necessarily understand the Yenko/Harrell relationship.

The car has only had three owners up to the point where we acquired the car.

"Sparky" Kemp (Larion John Kemp) Original owner. 1968-1978.

The Camaro went out West / Arizona early in it's life and the second owner purchased it in 1978 and did not have it for very long.

Interesting that "Sparky" ran it through an Auction, prior to selling it and listed the Camaro as a Dick Harrell prepped 427 L88.

The story as told by several who were there, including the original owner of the Black Gibb/Harrell/Yenko, that this Red one had a Stinger Hood as well as a dual quad set up on it, when it was on Gibb's showroom Floor.

Did Warren have the conversion paperwork on the red Camaro?

Did it have the twin AFB's(or am I mistaken) like the 68 Chevelle that Brian Henderson had about 10 years ago?

Man that thing is cool!! 3rd owner contacted me looking for help in documenting the car. He really had no idea of the value or the magnitude of this car. I explained to him what it was and that the sister Black car I sold Joe Z, was still alive and in the middle of a concours restoration. He learned real quick what he had, and I commend Steve Bimbi as he truly took care of this owner and got the car into great hands. One quick call to Warren, and previous owner had documentation within a week. Money well spent! I was also told it had dual quads and a stinger hood. These 2 cars together at MCACN is going to be quite the site!

Dave, thanks for the referral and hooking us up with Dennis. The new issue of Muscle Car Review has a feature on this Yenko as well as two other Yenkos owned by members.

No problem Steve. This was a win win situation for everyone involved. Who knows how long that car would have sat. Talk about a down to earth normal guy Dennis is. Great guy.
