Default Amp gauge

on my 69 Camaro the consol amp gauge reads a tick over "0" at idle when driving with rpm up the gauge is peged at plus 40

Are they original gauges ? Battery condition ? Maybe voltage regulator sticking ? Ba

Have you checked the battery with a volt meter? Bring the RPM's up to 3000 and see what you have for voltage. It shouldn't be more than mid 14's.

As mentioned, it could be indicative of battery condition
