I think you are right, but I've been wrong a lot lately. Maybe someone broke the 12 bolt and swapped in a 10 bolt, or needed a 12 bolt for something else and swapped it. In '71 ALL Camaros and Impalas got the new 8.5 10 bolt, no matter what engine was used, and in '72 all Novas got the 8.5, but the Chevelle, El Camino, Monte Carlo didn't get the 8.5 until '73.

It is my understanding that all Big Block El Camino's only came with a 12 Bolt rear end. I just sold Casey69 on this site the last one I had. It was a 3:31 Posi coded only for a 402 1972 El Camino. Maybe he can chime in with the rear axle code?

Yes. FWIW Actually, I can't remember any Big Block Chevrolet car (Except Corvette) from 1965 to 1972 that didn't have a 12 bolt rear axle in it from the factory, especially Camaro and Chevelle. But I'm old.

Having owned 2 72 Montes and doing some research, and observing those cars, it was my belief that 72 was the last year for 12 bolts and most Monte Carlos got them to use up existing supplies.

Chevelle, El Camino and Monte Carlo were the only big block cars to get the 12 bolt in '72. All other Chevys (except Vega and Vette) had the 8.5 10 bolt at that time, no matter what engine was installed. All other GM cars (Except maybe GTO) had also gone to the 8.5 by '72.

I believe there are known 69 Camaro BB automatic cars w 10 bolt reads... I’ve been known to be wrong on occasion though. Kurt would know.
