Bill supplied the aluminum inner fenders. '62s didn't have aluminum bumpers. Joe Gardner's car had a steel front otherwise. Had to be for A/S.

Verne

BTW: The '63 Z-11 aluminum bumpers were still chromed.

Is that the infamous Zinmaster plague as well ?
Chevy built aluminum fitted lightweight cars & over the counter race parts but NHRA only classified Steel cars ?
kind of switch n switch game some of the racers played from track to track National event to National event ?

The Tedesco brothers here in the Pgh area had a Z11 or Aluminum '62 Car from a famous racer. don't know from whom.???
The car is supposedly still around sans front end. .and a front end is around Western Pa / Eastern Ohio.
but the guys here hunting are mum.

Customer of mine was given a 70 Hemi Challenger R/T to run as a dirt track stock car right off the lot in 70. Doesn't remember what happened to it after he was done though.
When Enduro racing was popular here in the late 80's / early 90's I know that a lot of good stuff was lost then. Most memorable to me was a 69 M-code 440 Barracuda fastback.
The one that got "away" so to say to dirt track racin' was reported to be a 69 427 Nova. I had first heard about the car in 82 from a friend in HS. He knew how the 427 met its' death. It then went on to have multiple small blocks in it before landing into another friends hands who turned it into a dirt track car and eventually retired it to his dads farm. When his dad sold the place the car ended up being crushed. If, IF! I can ever find the slip of paper I have the cars' serial number but I've had 2 moves and 25 years since I last saw that paper.

Verne
, that Red 62 Bubble top is prettier than most.. the tire/wheel combo, the collectors and of course the lettering !
that would be awesome to see again as a 100% accurate Tribute .

Tom,

What I'm saying is that the aluminum cars were not allowed to run in any Stock class. (He slipped by with the inners). In '62 the only aluminum was the fenders, inner fenders and hood. Those cars all ran B/FX. The '63 Z-lls had 13 different pieces of aluminum (but no longer any inner fenders) and they ran A/FX after the Winternationals. IF Chevy had provided a list of 50 VINs to NHRA, they could have run Super Stock. When they first showed up at the Winternationals, they had no class because Chevy provided them with a list of only roughly 40 cars and they invented a class for them - LP (Limited Production), which meant they all ran against each other. Pissed a lot of people off.

Yes, I agree. Joe was very careful about the car's appearance. In fact, those chrome wheels were bought JUST before the photo shoot for that purpose. The gold on top of the fenders was actually metalflake but hard to tell from any photos. My very good (deceased) friend Ronnie Evans was going to build a tribute but all his time went into his own race car. Joe and his wife are still doing well in AZ.

I was talking to an older body man at a local Chevrolet dealership about racing and he told me he turned a Z-16 into a dirt track car back in the day. Back then nothing was sacred.

In retrospect, any and all cars were made to be used, USED & Abused in ways any body could or would for our status, egos, bravado and to an end of the means, Alot of people who did this, racers or not really have no interest in going back in time in a nostalgic way we do .. to appreciate ,honor, duplicate and build our own in traditions of days past.......

This is a very intriguing thread for many reasons......
