Default 72 Chevelle SS with no paperwork.Any clues.

I have a chance to buy this car but it has no paperwork.Can anyone see any clues if it is authentic or not?

Didn't the VIN note which engine the car was built with starting in 1972?

Yes, but only a W-code would guarantee an SS.

If it is a 454 car the VIN will have a W in it. A 396 car will have a U in the VIN

I don't think a U would determine an SS. Only a W, although a non-SS U would be neat.

If its a Canadian car you can get docs from GM of Canada.

They actually made a SS 350 2bbl ,350 4 bbl,402, and 454 in 1972..Also u could order the ss stripe pkg on a malibu along with the round gauges etc....vin will tell u all but the 402 as u could get a malibu 400 with the 402 non ss car..

Also, the 71-72 SS optioned cars got 12-bolt rears except for the 350 2bbl. Those came from the factory with a 10-bolt.
