Default Pure Stock Drags Stanton 2014

I went up to Stanton on Friday to watch the Pure Stock Drags qualifying sessions. I believe the car count was around 150. Here are a few cars I took pictures of. I hope you guys enjoy them!

This is Steve Arp's LS6 Chevelle. It is a bench seat TH400 car and was running in the 12.90's. It's an original LS6 car with the only addition being the 3 spoke wheel.

This is Tony Ragla's L78 4 speed Nova. It was originally built by Jimmy Johnson and has aluminum heads added to it. It was running mid 12's.

This Astro Blue LS6 Chevelle was a bench seat 4 speed car and came all the way from Louisiana. He was doing monster burnouts and running 13.00's.

This is John Maher's original L78 Chevelle. It's an 07B car that was sold new out of Draper Chevrolet in Saginaw MI. He was running mid 12's.

This is John Maher's original L78 4 speed Chevelle that was sold new out of Berger Chevrolet in Grand Rapids MI. This one was running 13.00's.

This Belvedere is an original LC Max Wedge car with a bench seat and push button TorqueFlite. The best pass I saw it make was an 11.67.

This is Mike Leyes' A12 Road Runner. It is a bench seat 4 speed car and was running high 12's.

Here is another original LS6 Chevelle. This was a bench seat TH400 car without cowl induction. The best pass I saw it make was a 12.68.

This is Rick Mahoney's WM21J Super Bee. It is a bench seat car with a TorqueFlite and was the number one qualifier with I believe an 11.53.

This 69 Nova was an original L78 car with a bench seat and a TH400. He was going pretty easy on it and was running in the 14.40 range. This car had the heavy duty goose neck radiator in it. I don't know if that was available on the Nova's or not.

This is Dan Jensen's original W30 442. It's an automatic car and was running mid 13's. I'm not sure who was driving it.

Here is a Silver Metallic A12 Road Runner with a TorqueFlite. I saw him run a string of low 13's.

Charles Lombardi brought this low mile unrestored 409 Impala all the way from Rhode Island. I've seen it run 12.80's in the past, but I'm not sure if he ever got out of the 13's yesterday.

This 440 Hardtop is an original code 09 race Hemi car that is owned by Rick Mahoney. The original owner was at the track on Friday and I talked to him for a little bit. He said he went to the plant to pick the car up so he wouldn't have to pay the delivery charge to the dealer. It is an original 4 speed car that he said ran 12.20's when he had it. Yesterday it had a TorqueFlite in it and was running traction limited 11.60's. They were just doing exhibition passes with it since it is a race Hemi car and those aren't eligible for competition at this event.

This 73 Formula 455 is an original X code Super Duty car. It had an automatic and was running 13.90's.

This Plum Mist Firebird is an original RA car without a radio and heater and had a column shift automatic. The best pass I saw it make was a 12.54. I believe this used to be Jim Matteson's car.

This is Paul Richard's original L78 Camaro with aluminum heads added to it. He was running 12.40's with it.

These two COPO Camaro's made a few exhibition passes at the end of the day. The blue one is a supercharged 350 with an automatic and the gray one is a naturally aspirated 396 with a 4 speed. They made one side by side pass with the 396 receiving a one second head start. The supercharged car caught him at the top end. Both cars had problems hooking up and weren't running to their full potential. The 350's best pass was in the 8.90's and the 396's best pass was in the 9.70's.

I'm not sure what happened with the last 5 pictures. If anybody can tell me what I did wrong I would appreciate it.

Thanks!

Neat cars. That 1973 would be one of the forty-three SD455 Formulas built (and one of 9 Ascot silver automatics). If it is the one I am thinking of, it would be the automatic with an original warranty service replacement engine that was for sale for a long time on ebay by some classic car dealer (Willholt?) out west. Someone finally bought it a year or so ago and seems to be enjoying the heck out of it now.

13.90 is a nice number for an off-the-street SD455. With some fine tuning they really can run. Lots of potential there in carb tuning alone. Nice to see a 8.4-to-1 compression engine running with the monster 12-to-1 compression cars.

Are the PS drag cars the ones that are built to factory specs (purely stock) or are they ones that must appear to be stock but, can have stroker motors? I like both series but, I think I prefer the purely stock.

I wish they would run one of those events at Atco or E-Town; I'd love to see that many pure stock muscle cars running down the track.
