1969 chevelle ignition key help
My ignition key tumbler won’t stay in the steering column. It works as it should but pulls in and out with zero resistance. Is it something in the column causing this or is it the tumbler itself? Thanks

Is it an OEM switch or aftermarket? There is a spring loaded tab on the back of the lock switch that holds it into the column. I have found on 'some' reproduction switches that this tab is not being held out far enough to catch and I had to rework the wire spring that puts tension on it to hold it out further.

Rick appears to be original but it was in the car when I bought it and the car has been restored previously from me owning it! Any way to tell

Pull it out and take a photo similar to what I did. If that tab is not sticking up a little reworking of the wire spring will keep the tab in the up position and it will hold. I will look at your photo and see if that appears to be the problem. If someone damaged the housing inside it could also cause this problem.

Rick it barely sticks up past the surface! If it’s in the lock position it will not go back in the column all the way.

It does in fact not appear to be sticking up enough. The front edge is beveled to allow it to slide in and lock when you insert it. Call me at 217-626-2277 and I will walk you through how I was able to fix that.
