454 equipped Camaro Super Cars
Over the years we've seen '69 Camaros being sold "new" with 454s from the likes of Bristow Motors, Dick Harrell, Nickey, Motion and others. These cars fall into an odd category as their engine wasn't available in the model year of the car. None-the-less, they're cool.
Do you think overall this hurts their popularity/value compared to the other years of supercars that had transplanted engines from the same model year? |

I would rather have a 427 over a 454 any day of the week. For me personally, a 454 in a '69 Camaro over a 427 is not a plus.

The yellow Motion 1969 Camaro with the 454 that Legendary has is one of my favorite cars. I am a 427 lover, but those 454 numbers on anything look great. Actually, I'd live with either engine in a 1969 Camaro.

I'd definitely prefer a 427 over a 454 in a 1969 supercar too but I'd welcome a documented 454 supercar into my garage as well. The yellow Motion Camaro Legendary has is a perfect example Tim.

Isn't a 454 just a 427 with a stroked crankshaft? They both shared the same block in '69 and '70.
If the '69 model year had been extended into 1970, Chevy might have added another COPO number for the 454. Who knows, stranger things happened back then.

A 454 is a stroked 427 that is externally balanced, both great motors. I’d be proud to own either in a 69 Camaro. Or a ‘67 or ‘68 for that matter.

Here are the specs on an LS7, this is what is in the 67 L78 Camaro (Mr. Outlaw) that was raced at Dover Dragstrip in NY from 1967-1976, at the time it had a 427 with a tunnel ram & twin 850 Holley carbs, it ran a best of 9.86 @ 139. The LS7 made 568 HP on the dyno with a single carb, it now has the original tunnel ram & the twin 850's on it that was on the car in the late 60's.
There is a video of this engine running on another post if someone can find it. I believe it was on a post from Scuncio titled Does anyone know this car Mr. Outlaw. Last edited by 69L78; 06-15-2024 at 10:05 AM. |

I'll never own a super car. It's just out of my league. If I did have the opportunity to own one I would want the 427. When I built the 427 for my Camaro I had all of the parts to build a 454, but chose 427 instead. To me the 427 numbers are associated to high performance and racing much more than 454. When I think of a 454 I usually think of a truck engine, although the Chevelle LS6 is a great high performance engine.
