Default NOS GM Camshafts with rust on Journal Surface

Has anyone used a GM camshaft that has what I would consider minor rust on the bearing journal area. Its not crusted by any means just like it was stuck in the tube in various spots. I haven't tried to clean it yet and wondering what would be the best process to do. Its a GM nos BBC 180 camshaft will be putting it into a L88 motor for a little more bump. Thanks, Larry

Submerg it into some evap-O-rust. That should clean it up.

You can buff it with crocus cloth

It worked wonders on my rusted 455 crankshaft.

Hello, thanks for the evap-o-rust idea I tried it and here are the results. Soaked for 12 hours each side. Anyone see any reason why this cam could not be installed. Before and after photos. Larry

I would still hit it with some crocus cloth, but I wouldn't be afraid to run it....

you could wet sand it with 1500 up to 3000 to finish. And you could use oil or WD-40 instead of water. That cam should be fine, just make sure it is polished.

Yeah, definitely wet sand with WD-40 or similar light oil. Clean up, buff with crocus cloth and clean again. Need the surface polished. Random small spots/micro-pits are ok. I'd be worried about if full width of journal surface is scarred with pits you could feel with your nail. Hard to tell in the pics.
