Default Correct stripe colors?

I,ve heard conflicting information about the correct Z/28 stripe color for a garnet red car without a vinyl top. Could you have ordered white or only black?
thanks. toner

I believe that the recommended stripe color on a Garnet Red car, without a vinyl top was black. However, we would get a fair number of orders that would come through our Fleet & Special Order Department for white stripes, where black would normally be painted and also black where white would normally be used.

Thanks, a friend of mine has that color combo and he was told it was incorrect. I appreciate your time and information.

Let's not make it sound like one had a choice of stripe color. Deviation from normative practice required a dealer special order. I have a window sticker copy for a Le Mans blue/no vinyl Z/28 built with black stripes. The first line on the sticker is 1001AA SPECIAL PAINT, paint code - -.

Thus the garnet red/white stripe car is incorrect if it isn't - - paint.

This I understand now. In your oppinion would this combo be more incorrect, then say an original blue car repainted yellow. On a similar note is red the correct stripe color for a burgundy Z/28 without a vinyl top. I ask this as there is one with this combo near me still in the hands of the original owner.thanks

I have seen this car several times. The original owner sold it and bought it back later from a guy in CA. Car was sold new at Bob Eriksen Chev. in IL. I have seen the doc. and original photos of the car. Not an appealing combo, but that is the way he bought it new.

Back in 1979 I bought a 1969 Z/28 that was Garnet Red with white stripes. The car only had 28,500 miles and I bought it for $3,500.

Sure wish I would have held onto that car.

Burgundy/red is not as strange as you may think. The stripe chart in the showroom album shows red as the standard D90/DX1 stripe color with Burgundy.

I know of a British green '68 Z/28 with black stripes. Hardly visible.

I am the owner of the red/white car that prompted the original post in this thread. I personally e-mailed Jim last week and Kurt and the CRG group may remember some e-mails that we traded regarding this car several months ago. The mystery surrounding this car is that the trim tag clearly shows the 52 52 code and not the -- -- code. I can assure you that several individuals have examined this car, including a body professional with over 32 years of experience, and there is no evidence that black stripes were ever applied to this car. The cowl area and some chips in the paint in the rear deck/spoiler area show very clearly that this car left the factory with white stripes. I realize that the books show that this car should not have been built in this manner and I am the first to admit that I have never seen this color combo before on a 69. I have owned the car since 1979 and have spoken to former owners back to 1973 who all remember the car with white stripes. I'm not trying to stir the pot, just trying to figure out how this car could have been built. If there is enough interest I may be able to borrow a digital camera and post pictures of the cowl area and the chips in the rear stripes.
