I found this photo in a 1971 Air Progress covering the San Diego Cup "1,000 mile" air race that year. Clay Lacy, famous Lear Jet operator and film pilot, "races" his DC-7 against someone's FED during the airshow. Lacy placed sixth at the 1970 California 1,000 air race in Super Snoopy.

[/ QUOTE ]Boy was he FAST in Modified/Comp Eliminator in the late 70 early 80's in a corvette I believe. Can't remember without looking if it was an E, F and G/Gas car or Modified Production or even D/A class. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif Remember Jerry Ault and the Ault and James corvette, Tony Christian and even Albert Clarke and Don Koonce. Jerry was big into those screaming 288's in heavily weighted little cars. It was nothing for him to have 500 pounds of "crossmembers" somewhere toward the rear of the car. Here's a picture of his last Corvette at the old airport/dragstrip Suffolk Virginia.
http://www.yenko.net/attachments/361368-Marquart%40Suffolk.jpg
Somewhere between the 55 Chevy and the 63 Vette, he bought my 57 Corvette and turned it into a 3500 pound gasser. He was racing it at a Division 3 Indy points meet when the car ahead blew an engine and oiled the track. He got into the oil, went sideways, full throttle into the guard rail at half track. Don't have any pictures of the 57 Vette when he raced it.

One of the many sections of a Camaro website that I have been working on putting together for a while is a drag race section. This weekend I started to clean up some of the pics that will be used. Some are not final shots and are literally pictures pf pictures at this point as I am waiting for true scans so quality is not always great but figured some of you may like them. Also if anyone would like to contribute any pictures for use on the site of any year Camaro please feel free to contact me.
1. 1967 Camaro L78 convertible, true day two pic as it is literally the day after it was bought. The paper in the rear quarter window is actually the window sticker. This car would go on to become the BatCar setting numerous NHRA and AHRA records and winning numerous championships under both race drivers in its career.

2. Early front launch shot of the BatCar.

4. Color shot of the first BatCar paint scheme taken at Englishtown NJ in early 1968

5. Picture of the BatCar after receiving the Rod Shop paint scheme, yes the Rod shop of Hemi fame, this is one of the beasts that put them on the map.

6. BatCar after it left the Rod Shop and went to it's next owner
http://www.chevroletcamaros.com/dragracing/fbatcarafterrshopb.jpg
7. Another shot after the Rod Shop. The other 67 that you can see in the top left corner is an L78 Pace car that was raced out of Canada.

11. Mr. C's 67 L78 also reportedly taken at Englishtown but am not sure of this for a fact.

12. An unknown 67 SS 350 car, track unknown to me.
http://www.chevroletcamaros.com/dragracing/punknown1.jpg
13. A 68 coupe and 67 ragtop head to head. Again unknown track and am not sure of the names on the cars.

14. Little Giant 1968 Z-28 awaiting a new motor.

I will try and post a few more later on if people are interested or they can see everything once they go up on the site but that may be months off yet. So far the only part that has much in it is the vintage advertising section.

Well, if you are going to crash the grand daddy of all Yenko Camaros do it right and Dick Harrell did just that in 1967. He was not injured in this crash thankfully.

------What great pics these are. Thanks!!! Im almost sure I saw the "Batcar" Camaro in its original livery back in the day. Probably at 42 although I got to Columbus quite a bit while at Ohio U.
------And that Camaro shot with the Mopar in the backround sort of reminds me of 42 back in the day. "Dragway 42" isnt any more modern today but they have changed around a bunch of stuff like the starting line, tower, etc.......Bill S

Thank you Chevy454, any corrections or further information is appreciated. I would prefer to have more than just the pics on the site and include some info with them. For the names I am going by what is on the cars at the moment and will be the first to admit that there are many more knowledgeable about the actual history of the particular cars than myself.
Yes the BatCar is alive and well rolling around with a mere 1495 miles on it. The owner even made it out to the Nationals in Carlisle this year but for all the coaxing I could not get him to bring the car out with him and show it. I have become pretty good friends with the owner and was able to go out and photograph the car very extensively and interview him for the site getting many great stories of the car and racing in the day from him. Truly a great guy.

This Strickler "Old Reliable" and Dick Arons 67 Camaro photo was taken at the 1968 NHRA World Finals in Tulsa, OK on Oct 20, 1968. This was the semi final round in Super Stock eliminator. Strickler went on to beat his team mate, Bill Jenkins in the final round for the World Championship title.

Carmen had the 68...My dad has a lot of stories about that one. It was the strongest 12 bolt they had ever seen...They thought the ring and pinion was heat treated or something..it never broke. Also the front wheels were staggered...it allowed the car to move first...and not red light. there were a few other tricks..ill have to ask my dad.

I think Dana Mecum bought the 67 L78 Camaro this past year. I know that L. Kimball wanted one million for it. Don't know what the actual sales transaction was.
Jenkins sold the 68 L89 Camaro to Carmen Rotonda and it's location is not known. The 69 L78 is also still missing in action.

Actually working on picking up a 67 strip car right now. Pretty cool little car, not cut up too badly....has been on the strip for many, many years. Still titled and can be licensed for street with minor fixes.
Any price range thoughts on something in *decent* shape, automatic (6 cyl car originally), all plexi windows, glass hood, fuel cell, MSD, cage, tubbed with Ford 9inch, no rust? Want to make sure I don't make a mistake....looks like a helluva lot of fun! Also, looking for a vintage paint scheme to run on it. What would you make it look like, if you had one?
Also, looking for vintage rims to run on the car.

There was actually a very good reason why Mr Kimball would never race the car again but it's not my position to announce it on a public forum. All I will say is that in a similar situation, if you walked in his shoes, you'd understand why. Heartbreaking story.
Chevy454

I'd say most of us are familiar with the story, and it is indeed sad...but, it's also disheartening that the car never saw the track again, and was pretty much out of the public eye for so many years...lots and lots of history in that car.

Mark, the car was raced after his brothers death. He sold the car and then bought it back. He tolded me the reason he didn't raced it was because of it was worth to much. No mention of his brother. I stand by what I said.

------Langes used to have a bunch of Hi-Po stuff. I went there in 67 to look at a new 435 Vette. While there a performance oriented salesman took me over to a Camaro with big-block emblems on it. I had only seen small block Camaros up to that point, but this car was a 396/375. To add to this the car had headers and an extra gearset in the trunk. The sales guy said that they came delivered in the car but I obviously dont have any way to verify that today. I dont think the car had one other option besides the 4-speed and engine and probably posi!!!.......Bill S

One of the truly legendary sportsman race teams of the '60s that is still racing today. Dave and Ben Wenzel. Bought the car new, won Indy in 1967, set multiple national records and still race the car 41 years later. Not many can say that today?? Many don't know that Ben bought a new COPO car from Berger in June 1969. There were 23 of them on the lot at that time. He wanted the cheapest one!
This photo was taken in Vegas in 2005. Both Ben and I won class at this race! The Z28s beat up on the big block Novas that weekend. Ben had Jim Hughes in the final and I had Gary Waldo. We also changed the ring & pinion at the track in my car for the altitude change.

Super Stock Magazine did a four page spread on me and the car and how I found it.....May, 1996. The Strickler family had promo photos of the car when it was being set up for a shoot with Hot Rod Magazine. In one of those photos was a picture of the engine and vin stamping on the deck. I ran it through MVA and found the car less than 75 miles from York, PA.
Guy was getting ready to part it out and sell at a swap meet. Still has the original fenders, doors, quarters, sub frame, rear axle and more. Needed floors like any other super gas car would but it was rust free and kept inside all of it's life because it was a race car. Still had the original aluminum ball joint spacers that Howie Slaybaugh, (Strickler's crew chief) installed when the car was set up for Super Stock.

Some copo experts said this car wasn't a copo because of the body number, etc.

Here's a good one. Charlie Braxton's '67 Z28 at Capital Raceway about 1968. He bought this car new at Lustine Chevrolet in July 1967. Ordered the car in Feb but wanted factory headers and cowl plenum and had to wait extra months for the hot rod options.
Car is now in Idaho and we're building the 302 mill for this hot rod. This car and the new Stocker 67 Z that I built are the first two 67 Z28s that I saw in person. Back then, most people didn't know what they were.
Note the fancy lettering job. Charlie always had the car like this. Ask any of the old timers at Capital Raceway. Open headers and seven inch tires put this car in the 12.60 zone.

Verne,
In E/Stock, the weight break is 3260 lbs. 1968 Z28s are a natural E car and the 67 Z28 is a natural D car. Have to weigh 3105 in D. If I can get the new 67 Z28 race car to hook up like the Old Reliable, I should be able to run in the high 10.40 zone.
Out in Vegas, the old car was hooking up like gang busters. Two foot wheel stands on 9" tires. Felt like the car was bolted to the ground. When you let the clutch out all you saw was the sky. 7000 rpm launches!
That was an amazing race weekend for me. Got to pit with one of the all time legerdary sportsman races of our time, Ben Wenzel, both Ben and I won class. During the eliminator, 128 car field, I made it to the semi final round........4 cars and then the throw out bearing siezed up against David Rampy. The round before, I took out World Champ, Lee Zane. I was on a mission until the car broke. But as we say in the world or racing, [censored] happens.

That's as close as I got at a National Event. Three times it's happened. Won two divisional races over the 14 seasons that I campaigned the car.
Anyone who races will tell you that it's not easy! You have to do it because you love it. If you win, then it's a bonus. Both of my outings to the west coast in 2002 and 2005 were fun and made many new friends out there. I was in the $$$ rounds while on tour out there both trips. Did better than I do here in Div 1! NED is tough!

A little more about E.J. Potter.....
A short history of E. J. Potter
(or: So you thought Evel Kneivel was a wild and crazy guy!)
I don't know where E. J. Potter came from, the first time I became aware of him was when he was racing/showing off his exotic motorcycle. He took a Harley Davidson frame and put a small-block chevy engine in it, sideways. This engine had Hilborn injectors and burned Nitro, and was producing about 500 Hp. It was started by having a couple guys hang on from the side, and it was pushed with a truck. When the engine fired, the assistants lifted the rear of the bike (these must have been some strong guys!) and put it up on a wooden stand that kept the rear tire, a 10" wide racing slick, off the ground. When the christmas tree said go, E. J. would rev the engine to 6000 RPM and the assistants would push him off the stand! It did a wheelie about half-way down the strip, and did about 160 MPH in the quarter mile. E. J. tried to find a small, light clutch for the thing, but he never found anything that would work. He tried helicopter clutches, but even they didn't quite do it. The rear wheel was coupled to the engine with a huge multi-width roller chain. Well, one day he reached the end of the strip and closed the throttle, and nothing happened - the throttle was stuck! He cut off the magneto, but a very hot engine (no radiator, just the thermal mass of the water in the block) burning nitro at wide open throttle doesn't need much ignition! It kept right on running. He hit the brakes (dual caliper aircraft brakes) and that slowed him to about 150 MPH, but he could feet the handle retreating under his grip. There was no fuel cutoff! As he was approaching a line of trees at the end of the strip, he took the only action he could think of, he jumped off! He slid on his rear until it burned through his chaps into his skin, and then did some somersaults. Amazingly, he ended up being able to walk after all this, and followed the new gap into the forest to see what became of his machine. All he could find was an engine block! Nothing else recognizable.
Realizing that this was a bit more dangerous than he imagined, he started thinking of ways to make life safer, and while continuing with a rebuilt 327 CID bike (with, amazingly, a fuel cutoff!) he started to design his next generation machine. He got an old Dodge Dart station wagon and put an Allison 17xx CID V-12 airplane engine in the back, hooked up to something like a Borg Warner truck transmission. I don't know how he ever heard another sound after being inside a station wagon with an 1800++ horsepower engine. Anyway, there were some problems with the new machine, but it certainly was a crowd pleaser, and it did fairly good times on the clock, too. He felt that his new exhibition machine was a whole lot safer. Then, something happened. I suspect he couldn't leave well enough alone, and had to soup-up that Allison! Well, the engine blew apart one day, and he felt himself in a bit of deja-vu, sliding down a drag strip at 100+ MPH on his rear, again! This time, he was wearing Nomex, and had a racing seat still strapped to his rear, but the somersaults at the end were just as hard on the body!
Well, maybe giant engines are dangerous - so he had to get the engine OUT of the car! How can you do that? Ah ha! Make the "World's Fastest Slot Car" is how! So, he put another Allison on a flatbed trailer, hooked it to a locomotive dynamo, and laid copper strips down the length of the track. He gutted an old Honda Civic (back when they were little more than tin cans, anyway) and put four rewound jet engine starter motors in the Honda. Aside from brake rotors, there wasn't much else in the car but those 4 motors, 4 wheels and tires, and a seat! Well, it WENT! I don't remember the times, but it was FAST! This thing weighed something like 800 Lbs, hardly more than the drive train on a rail. It would beat the rails off the line like they were standing still. No tire burning, just 4 racing slicks pulling the car like a rock out of a sling shot. I think the rails sometimes caught up at the far end, since the Honda wasn't really designed for 300 MPH aerodynamics. This all takes the history up to maybe 1975 or so. I haven't heard any more stories about E. J. Potter since the slot car. I wish now that I had taken the opportunity to SEE this in person. All I know about this is from reading magazines, and I'm sure it would be MUCH more memorable to have actually SEEN it!

Ha ! I visited a guy in Linköping (close to Mantorp Park Raceway) the other day to buy his dragracing-photos from the seventies. I hoped to mabye find a pic of the "Convincer II" among them, but instead I found this one of my 327 Chevy II. This one should be from 1976 or possibly 1977.

If you look in the second set of pictures,on pg8/photo80, there is a pic of what apperes to be the old Alt & James corvette.Behind it you will see a black 68 Z28. A friend bought this car new in Dayton,Oh. Was the first black Z i had seen.He had put the cross ram carbs on it as well. That is where i got the idea for my black cross ram 69 Z28.I keep looking at these old pictures hopping to see some pics of my old cars. Thanks again Bill for the great photos. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif Sherm

Probably was. Super Stock/D was a very popular class for these cars back in 1969 and 1970. The 10.80 on the window should be the national record at the time. All Stock and Super Stock cars ran off the national record in the eliminator.

Are the photos that you posted from Delmar yours? During the 1969 season I was still in the Army and stationed at Ft. Riley, KS so I didn't make it to Delmar. The previous two years spent in Ethiopia so I really missed some good racing and never got to see some of the cars.
I was able to meet up with the Hampp's at Indy in '69 for my first national event.

Tom,
Timmy sent them to me in a shoe box about two years ago for some reason or another. I can't remember why, maybe a Strickler connection.
You should hook up with him and ask to scan and post all of the other thousands that he has.
For those on this site, that '57 Chevy is still in Timmy's barn rotting away. Keeps telling me he'll bring it back from the dead but at 65 years young, the clock is ticking away. LOL.

Al raced the 40 for a while with a Caddy Engine, then with a Hemi....he then built a 33 Willys around 65 and was very successful with it until he put a Clutchflite in it ...... At the Grove he did a wheelstand leaving the line and flipped the car over on the Roof.....He sold the car and never raced again..........

I was under the Impression you could get that GTO nose as an option on the Lemans, which I guess includes wagons. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

it was called the "sport" package, avail on any 71 or 72 Lemans
I worked at Pontiac from 71 - 74 and the "last" of the 72 model production run was mostly "Sport" versions, I recall seeing SEVERAL 100% loaded convertibles going to a Las Vegas dealer, the window sticker was twice the base msrp ... and they weren't even GTO's ...
common mistake by people over the years, any 71-72 LeMans with the Sport option was automatically considered a GTO because it looked like one ...
StealthBird
03-06-2009, 08:12 PM
The option was called T41, which attached the Endura "GTO" front bumper to any 1971/1972 Lemans or Lemans wagon. When an owner plopped some GTO stickers on the fenders and a GTO emblem in the grille, well, it leads to all sorts of confusion today. As a sidenote, they never made a 71/72 GTO station wagon, or a 72 GTO convertible, but there are lots of T41-nosed Lemans's running around with GTO stickers. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

Neat Story about this car........
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a251/kwhizz/Drag%20Cars/untitled-3.jpg
This is the Birthplace of the Chitown Hustler.......John Farkonas built the car in his Garage and brought it out to Byron Dragway for the first time at a Major Area meet...Having never seen the car before I spent a good amount of time looking at it as it was Engineered better than anything else that was around at the time.......Farkonas was a "Sliderule" Pocket Protector guy that built a car ahead of it's time, but wasn't a tuner or driver....which was evident after his first pass...LOL...anyhow, Austin Coil came over to look at the car and gave John some tuning tips and Tuned the car (which John appeciated)......Don't remember what it ran, but it scared the Hell out of Farkonas.......so , he asked Coil to drive ( at the time Coil was a Chrysler Mechanic and raced a Hemi Plymouth)......But Austin didn't want to drive it either.......one of Austins friends, Pat Minnick (who was a Chicago Policeman) came walking by and Austin knew Pat had the Balls to get in the car....Pat drove the car that day and they won the meet.......And....That's how it all started

I remember that car and agree with Ken. The car was impressively built. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif
Also forgot about the CT Engineering association. Jack Ditmars carried that on "Lil Screamer" and "Der Mini Brute".

Hi, I know this is kind of a late response but, I'm Larry Kimball's grandson. He sold the camaro that he restored for 750,000. I would know, I counted all the cash. I believe it was sold to guy who was going to put it in a museum in PA. I can't really remember all the details from where this guy was from or where he was putting it, as I was only 12 or 13 at the time. If you guys' have any more questions just reply here and I'll do my best to help you out <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif

Great pics!!!
As everyone here knows, Marshall Chev was a Yenko network dealer!.
In the Nova pic, looking closely at the Marshall sign in the background you can easily see the Yenko crest/logo also looks like it notes 427 Chevelles/Camaros/Novas?.

Professor Benny is not a Day-2 guy as we call it. He is a drag guy with some vintage Day-2 parts on that red nova. But, the Professor is learning. May have him talked into some Day-2 dealings on that silver COPO. Lets see what the Lehighton Flash may have up his sleeve for November in Chicago! BBBBenny and the Day-2 Jets. I can see it on his camaro doors now!

who's the big guy bending over talking to Grump?
W117Monte
04-03-2011, 06:30 PM
The big guy is Paul Thimm Sr. He lives in Mohton, Pa right near the track. His son races an Ex Grump Vega(im almost positive its an ex grump car) in the weekly bracket series at Maple Grove.

Thanks! My uncle said to look closely aside of grump and see who it was. I knew it right away. It's funny, if you were to snap a pic today at the race track he stands in the exact same spot watching. Also my uncle said the guy in the striped shirt is mike Lewis.

yep, Mike Lewis. Who is driving the Grumps car?
