View Full Version : RogerD's 1969 Dick Harrell Chevelle

I still have the POP and original owners manual for my '66 Chevelle SS396 . . .
Would be a pleasure to reunite these with the car's current owner if it's still out there . . .
These three photos (retrieved from my "treasure box") were taken on a poloroaid type camera in the Kansas City Area (Blue Ridge Mall), late fall of 1967 - sure wish I had taken the time for a few photos of my '69 DH back in the day. Amazing how well they have held up . . .
There will be lots of new photos and other 'hunt related' stuff to accompany my original car docs
in that 'treasure box' via DVD later on . . .

Did you take any photos under the hood? That would be neat to see.
RogerD
11-22-2010, 02:55 PM
Hi Rick:
No engine pictures on the '66 Chevelle - only the three shown above.
Not a single picture of my '69 DH Chevelle at all - sure glad I tucked away the docs!
Regrettable but pictures were just not one of my priorities back in the day . . .

Awesome to see it progressing!
It's like watching a 1:1 scale model kit going together. Only no airplane glue fingerprints on the windshield. (I dont think I ever successfully built a car model without those darn fingerprints!)
Keep the photos coming.

Diligent work Roger. Thanks for sharing.
Were the hood stripes and hood pins from Dick Harrell's shop?
RogerD
12-02-2010, 07:08 PM
Yes - Hood stripes and hood locks were applied/installed via Dick Harrell's shop before delivery to Bill Allen Chevrolet!
My goal was to restore it back to the way it looked the day I bought it new!
The guys at Premier Body & Paint in Buffalo MO have indeed accomplished that goal, exceeding our expectations!
RogerD

Hey guys, just noticed - it looks just like my avitar only the stripes are MUCH better :)
Also, just have to give credit to my lovely wife - she's been on board from the gitgo, encouraging me all the way!

Good morning Gang:
Nothing new in pictures - hopeful I'm not boring anyone with my ramblings . . .
We are running out of 2010 and will celebrate the new year in just a few days.
Can't tell you how much more meaningful our project has been in being able to share with all of you and for your encouragement along the way!!
Here's where we are today:
.....Frame, body and paint work are 100% complete
.....Engine, transmission and rear end are 100% complete
.....Interior, all detail work is yet to be done (wiring, upholstery, headliner, glass install, door panels, etc)
.....Under the hood, lots of work yet to be done (wiring, radiator install, hoses, ws wiper motor, regulators, brake booster & lines to valve, etc)
.....Exterior trim, mostly complete but some to be done (stainless ws trim, sidemarkers, mirror, glass trim, etc)
.....Exterior mechanical, mostly complete but a few remaining (front sway bar, drive shaft, bleed and set up the brakes, install gas tank & hook up)
I am capable, qualified and will most likely do most of this stuff except for setting the glass.
Planned originally to complete all of this stuff while the car was in Missouri but, I'm looking forward to the hands on time detailing it out.
I will be pleased to provide updates and of course pictures, as soon as I have news to report . . .
Have a safe and Happy New year :)

Happy New Year Kim and 'the gang'!
Progress is slow right now.
Detail work - searching for a few small (hard to find) trim parts that must be replaced . . .
Hopeful we can successfully navigate a couple of hurdles in the next few weeks and then start on the major detail stuff.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Roger the car looks Great. have a question, back at the beginning of this you said the car currently had a 10 bolt in it, but this pic shows a 12 bolt that looks like its been in there for long time.</span>
RogerD
01-10-2011, 02:57 PM
When I bought the car back, a 10 bolt open rear end was installed and a 1970 12 bolt posi (wrong PN, wrong cast date) was included with the car (loose).
I Tracked down a cast date correct, PN correct 12 bolt and traded the '70 12 bolt for it. It now has a correct Eaton Series 4 Posi w/correct 4.10 gears.
Neighbors, Steve Venable and Keith Chandler had parts (date correct 840 heads and a series 4 Eaton posi) and helping locate parts.
They have been with me all the way on my adventure along with several other neighbors who have similar interests.
In fact, my first project part came from another next door neighbor, Gary Garrett who shares a back fence.
He brought over a set of NOS stainless steel seat belt holders he had on hand.
Gary also took the picture of my wife and I next to the car the day we brought it home - Keith and Steve were over that day as well.
Keith and Steve are both into muscle cars and Corvettes - good friends, always ready to help and close by . . .
RogerD
01-10-2011, 03:35 PM
Gary and his son are also into muscle cars - having done several projects over the years.
One of their projects has been featured in a couple of magazines - a killer resto-mod on a Chevy PU. . .
Gary introduced me to A.C.E.S and in fact, his efforts resulted in a visit to my home by none other than . . .
Chuck Hanson (A.C.E.S. Prez) to see the car and look over my documents in Sept 2009, just a few weeks after I brought it back home :)
Chuck did a short article in Chevelle World, March 2010

Good morning Gang:
I've hit a snag . . .
Need your help to locate a 1969 Chevelle Coupe rear seat (back and seat cushions)
Metal must be in VG condition - don't care about the covers.
Please PM me if you have one or know of one I can buy!!
Thanks :)
As long as you don't care about the seat covers, any 1968-72 GM A-body backseat will fit..Chevelle-Monte Carlo-Skylark-Cutlass-Lemans.
Here's one on the bay.. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1970-1971...sQ5fAccessories (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1970-1971-1972-Chevelle-Monte-Carlo-Rear-Seat-Original-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem3a6263f5c6QQitemZ25075 8821318QQptZVintageQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccess ories)
volspeed1970
01-19-2011, 05:43 PM
Actually that seat will not fit as the 70-72 models have the armrests that go to the floor so the seats are narrower. He needs one from any 68-69 A-body except Grand Prix's, 4-doors, and convertibles.
RogerD
01-19-2011, 05:48 PM
The rear seat back and lower I have (been told it's 70 ~72 A body) is too narrow.
Measures about 56" across the lower edge at the front.
The rear seat out of my 69 donor car (it's rotted out and not good enough to fix) measures right at 60" across that same point.
Thanks :)
I know, but didn't know how particular you wanted to be.
A 1970-72 rear seat will fit into a 68-69 with a lil wiggle room, but a 68-69 rear seat is too tight for 70-72.
You could post a wanted ad in the wanted section for quicker results.

Maybe it is the angle of the picture, but massive positive camber like that will not give you any driving pleasure ...

Good morning Gang:
My car had GM fender flags, like this. . .
Same size as 396/427 emblems - large flags but no "427Turbo-jet". . .
May have been big block '67 Impala flags.
You could tell it was a V8 but no mention of cubic inches . . .
No hint of anything 'special' under the hood . . .
When asked about the motor back in the day, "just a stock V8" :)

Page #20 post w/date correction (I traded it Oct 19, 1970) . . .
-----Correction is: "dealer wholesaled it late '70/early '71" . . .
GM warranty "CE" short block Dec 1969 . . .
GM warranty "rebuild" CE block, Oct 1970 . . .
Traded while at dealership for warranty CE block rebuild . . .
I have pictures of the 1966 SS 396 Chevelle I traded along with the '66 paperwork . . .
The vin from the '66 SS is shown on my '69 Dealer/customer invoice . . .
Not a single picture of the '69 (just was not a priority back then). . .
I have the window sticker and customer invoice from the '70 Camaro RS when I traded the '69 DH/COPO Chevelle . . .
The '69 is listed on the '70 dealer paperwork . . .
Kept this stuff along with various other trivia (a bible from 2nd grade, stuff from Boy Scouts, indian artifacts I found and various other trinkets. Just could never throw it away . . .
I knew the Chevy dealership at which I traded the car very well - my (then) future father-in-law was their top salesman.
He knew it was a Dick Harrell Chevelle "SUPERCAR" with a BIG motor and just couldn't wait for me to get rid of it.
He shuddered every time I showed up to take my fiancee (now my wife for almost 40 years) on a date and pestered me constantly to trade it off.
In the mid 70's, HP cars were in the dirt as far as trade in's went - the dealership wholesaled it in late '70/early '71 because they could not get rid of it . . .

Today is a special day for Karen and me!!
Two years ago today KenH and I were heading home from Ottawa, IL with traler in tow and an old Chevelle sitting on it.
Pulled into the drive about 4:30 in the afternoon after a grueling 900+ mile drive.
This evening, we will have a quiet celebration remembering the events from these past two years and also events from over 40 years ago!!

Sad news this morning - we learned that Karen's classmate, Ben Houghton, passed away Saturday, Oct 22, 2011 :(
Summer of 1970, the other Race . . .
The other race was just outside Karen's hometown of Gallatin, MO in the summer of 1970 shortly after we were engaged. She and a lifelong friend Janel Reynolds, were riding around with me that summer evening when we were “invited” to race Karen & Janel’s underclassman, Ben Houghton in his strong running Challenger 440 six pack. Junior Burke set it up on Highway 13 between Gallatin and Hamilton. Ben smoked his tires - I eased off the line and then hammered it to the turnaround. Flashing red lights in the distance heading our way halted a rematch . . .
December 2010, I tracked Ben Houghton down to his mom’s place in Gallatin through long time friends, Frank and Kay Woodruff who still live in the area. Turns out Ben was visiting his mom (he lives in Georgia now) and was there for a few days – what luck! Ben remembered the “good old days” and our brief 1970 encounter. When we talked, he remembered that he “never lost a race” in his Challenger. I didn’t push the point with Ben – after all, it was over 40 years ago and lots of water under the bridge since then. Later that same day, Frank called to tell me about his conversation with Ben and mentioned Ben recounting that “his Challenger didn’t win one race with an Orange Chevelle after all” - we had a good laugh about that call. I spoke to Ben the next day and we had a good laugh as well. Didn’t really matter to Ben or me on who won the race – it was just good to finally hook up with Ben again and talk about old times . . .

Re: Special Order Paint Codes
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you are speaking special paint in 69 and how it was shwn on the tag the following are what I have observed so far. Atlanta, Baltimore and Kansas used dashes "- -", Freemont used a single dash " - ", I have no examples for Framington or Oshawa yet. Additionally the Kansas tags had AVO and a sequential number listed on their tags, they fall into sequence when the VINs are in order. The highest AVO number I have is AVO 227 and it is a 07C build week body. I would say there were possibly less than 300 special paint jobs for 69 at the Kansas plant. The odd thing is a couple of the AVO tags are for 72 color painted cars. I do not have enough details about those cars to investigate farther at this time. This AVO code also was used on Buicks built at the same plant, so it wasn't limited to chevelles. hope this helps Andy

Re: special paint code on kanas built cars
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think it might depend on the year. For 1969, I have what appear to be the special paint codes, the letters AVO followed by a 3 digit number. This number seems to go sequential regardless of the division and body model. the highest number I have found for 1969 is 227 and it falls in build week 07C. so it is quite possible there were less than 300 for that build year. if anyone has found additional AVO coded trim tags for 1969 chevelles, I'd like to include them in my research, a picture of the tag is wanted on these during addition to the research. This is strickly based on what I have reported/found during my ongoing research and in no way is the final word. FWIW Andy

Roger:
I ran across this thread and thought I would share my memories. In the mid 70's (74-75) I lived next door to the local Chevy dealer (Larry Fannin Chevrolet) and would watch the used cars coming through. I remember a 69 Malibu (dark green, no vinyl roof)coming through that had been sold new by WWW Chevrolet in Ezel,Ky. . My friend Gary and I thought it was starnge to see an original car like this with a SS hood. Upon getting the owner (Dee Fannin) to open the car and let us check it out it was a factory 427 Malibu. Yours is the only other one of these I have heard of. It had carpeted floors a 4 speed (white ball) with a Hurst shifter and a bench seat (green fabric) and no tach. The owner stated that it was a 1 owner car and original . Just thought I would chime in .Congradulations on finding your car

Rainy day here and I just read through this entire thread. What a great story! I cannot imagine driving past a dealership in 1969, seeing this car and then realizing it was a 427 car--and then closing the deal that same morning! I would have vapor-locked the day I located the car after all these years and hoping to close the deal before something or someone scuttled it. Love the '67 427 Impala V emblems on the fenders.

Wait a minute. You mean you can't even display pictures or share info about your car because it bears the name of Dick Harrell? Is that even legal? The car was built and sold by Dick Harrell Performance Center when it was new. It was a product that YOU paid for WHEN NEW and is authentic (Dick Harrell GOT his money when he modified the car). Does that mean I can't display my old Coca Cola signs because the Coca Cola Company owns the trademark? The signs were manufactured as Coke advertising when new, just like your car was built and sold new as a Dick Harrell modified car. It's not like I went out and made up my signs, or you went out and cloned a Dick Harrell car therefore committing trademark infringement, they were born that way (or in your case, created literally on day 2). WTF?
Frank, take a look at Rogers post about his car on Team Chevelle. There is a post from "Mrs. Dick Harrell" that is pretty interesting to read.

I feel sick after reading that TC thread as Roger/Karen and their car is one of the most beautiful lost love found car stories ever!
Frank's posting above is right on as Roger paid for a DH car (as his original purchaser documents prove) and proclaiming things exactly as they are does not need renewal blessings by the current DH operation or anyone else.
It's truly sad how the true facts don't sit well w/ everyone, especially noticeable with how the timing of this foolishness coincides w/ the recent publicity this car's been gaining.
Whatever happens from here on Roger, best of health and happy trails!
Thank you for sharing your and Karen's story also happiness throughout the whole finding and restoring the car, all worth so much more than $ or any new pieces of paper!

I am sick after reading that crap on Team Chevelle. What has (recently) transpired in these two threads has just reminded me EXACTLY why I have tried my best to stay away from Internet forums. Simple answer, they are filled with f&%$@&g douche bags. Plain and simple.
Roger, I know you don't know me, and I have never personally seen your car, but what I have read in this thread from the beginning was one of the best, if not THE best stories I have ever read on this site. Period. I would just continue to show your car and enjoy it with out any thought to those rotten no good "people." Who gives a rat's a$$ what they think. As far as what they think about "trademark infringement" or whatever, F&%K EM. They ain't got nothin. Any judge would laugh after seeing the evidence and hearing your story I'm sure. Just enjoy the car and if you feel like taking a screw driver and jamming it under the DH emblem and tossing it in the trash I bet many wouldn't hold it against you. You got an amazing car and they have a legacy that they have personally destroyed. I swear to god, I wouldn't take one of those cars if someone gave it to me. I know there are many others here that share those same thoughts.

It was (and still is) a COPO with mods via Dick Harrell's shop . . .
About $300.00 less DHPC options than Rod Bushnell's (Randy Krnac's) 1969 COPO Dick Harrell Camaro :)
I have no reason to believe that Bill Allen would participate in a scam to market a fake Harrell car . . .
Bottom line, my only proof is the Dick Harrell MSRP and the belief that Dick Harrell was a man with integrity . . .

I mean, is this supposed to be an effing joke?

I generally try to avoid these arguments, but I have a few questions and observations here. First, I noticed that an observation was made on TC regarding the fact that Roger had no contact with DHPC, and that when warranty work was required, the car was returned to Bill Allen, and that this was somehow proof that the car carries no Dick Harrell connection. The logic of this statement seems faulty. Roger purchased the car from Bill Allen, why would he not have returned there for warranty work? It would seem that the onus would fall on Bill Allen to handle any coordination with Harrell on warranty work, not the customer. Had I owned the car, returned for warranty work to Bill Allen, and been told "Sorry, go see Dick Harrell" I would have proceeded to raise hell right there in the showroom. This seems like weak evidence on the part of those claiming that the car carries no connection to Dick's operation. How were warranty claims on cars sold in California, for example, handled(I believe Harrell's dealer network extended that far)? Surely these owners weren't told to have their new cars towed 1500 miles to Harrell's shop to satisfy said claims.
Next, a point of pride more than anything else. Someone on TC made the claim that the car was sold with a Harrell invoice to fluff it up for a market that didn't know what a COPO was. This is complete and utter bull@!*$. I'm no expert on Chevy supercars, but I am fairly knowledgeable regarding the musclecar scene in the Kansas/Nebraska/western Missouri area. People here were well aware of the COPO process. Mac's in Crete, NE and VanT in Topeka were both well known movers of COPOs at that time. I also have reliable information of more than half a dozen dealers selling one or more COPO Camaros/Chevelles in the northeast Kansas area alone. I'd bet that KS/NE/MO was second only to the Ohio/Pennsylvania/New Jersey area in terms of total COPO sales. A distant second, sure, but to claim that people here were unaware of then is simply incorrect. A minor point, but the idea that Bill Allen was somehow forced to add Harrell badges and paper to move the car seems ludicrous to me.
Next a general observation. It seems that there are people who now wish to discount the paperwork and the original owner's statements. Fine. But it seems as though these are some of the same people who in the past have venerated paperwork and owner history as the only true measure of a car's worth. It has been intimated, in fact, that an in-person review of a car itself is virtually worthless <span style="font-weight: bold"><span style="font-style: italic">without the accompanying paper and owner statements.</span></span> So which is it? Is the paperwork not enough in this case? If so, why? Are there not other examples of COPO Chevrolets delivered through Bill Allen and modified at Harrell's shop that are deemed legit? Even if the modification was something as simple as re-jetting the carb and modifying the distributor, that indicates something beyond the ordinary, doesn't it? What's the threshold for necessary modifications to be considered a true Harrell car? I believe that even non-converted Yenko Novas are still considered Yenko Novas so long as YSC paperwork exists.
There's more, but that's enough typing for now. Roger, it's a fantastic car and a story, and I've enjoyed following along. The recent turn of events is unfortunate, but as you said, you know what you have and what the paperwork shows. I know what I believe to be the case in this situation, and I'll tell anyone who asks that you have a legitimate Supercar.

----Everybody here has good points that will stand the test of time. One other thing that I could add would be that I wouldnt tow my car across the street for the Harrell group to look at. I can only imagine how I would feel if I towed the car any distance and a tow strap broke or a coyote ran in front of my truck or any other of the million things that could happen just to try to get verification of what I already knew to be true. In a word it isnt worth it, Roger!!! You know what you have, and theres nothing the Harrell group can really add. I get the distinct feeling that you would tow the car to thier location just to recieve a rejection anyway.......Bill S

As far as warranty work back then, you could take your car to whatever GM dealer you wanted. Back in '68 I had a Ram Air I Firebird. When brand new at London Motor Products, London, Ontario, the engine was balanced and blueprinted. The heads were cut to minimum CCs. The Royal Pontiac Bobcat kit was added along with polylok nuts, and headers. The rear rims were widened to 8" and the biggest MTs available were added. The Pontiac dealers in Oshawa and Peterborough, Ontario did warranty work with no questions asked. I would imagine that the same GM rules would have applied to Roger's car. Our COPO car had headers and fat tires, Hurst shifter, yet warranty work was never a problem. Roger, stick your ground. You have hidden nothing. You have the paperwork to back up what you say and what others think is irrelevant. I have not once seen where you claimed anything more than what the paperwork shows. Enjoy the car and ignore them. Party poopers.

I too would just move on. The car is what it is and the paperwork is what it is. No one can change that nor take it away. Personally I love the car. My buddy also had a new orange COPO Chevelle in '69. Roger's is definitely striking and will hold its own in ANY show.

Nice reality check of the situation. It is quite refreshing.
I know Roger and he has always wanted to do things right regarding the car, its restoration and history. Unfortunately not all the parties involved have been on board. It doesn't matter. He has all he needs to enjoy this beautiful piece of automotive history.

Please keep the discussion on this site civil.
My two cents is if I were the Harrell's I would not bluntly say it is not a Harrell car. They might think it isn't but Roger apparently has a Harrell document saying it is. Regardless of the inconsistencies, how do you prove he doesn't have a real document ? I don't see Joel Rosen saying "You don't have a Motion car". What he usually says is more like "I don't believe you do" or " Without further proof I can't document your car". That way Joel isn't liable for discrediting and possibly devaluing a real car if it turns out he is wrong. I could see where the dealer might stick a Harrell Sticker on it to possibly help it sell and have a agreement with Dick. Nothing was set in stone back then.
The Harrell group is not allowed on this site so a better place to continue the discussion is probably the Chevelle site.

Interesting discussion….I was just talking to a friend yesterday and complaining about all the DH clones I see popping up at car shows. Jeeze!! They now outnumber the Yenko clones 100 to 1.. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/rolleyes.gif
Seriously? At this point in time, who in their right mind would clone a DH car? They have taken the piss out of the hobby so bad that that people with “real” cars go thru a load of crap just to own them. Time to lighten up. The world is a much better place when you realize this is just a hobby for most. A part of life that takes us away from the corporate BS that most of us deal with on a daily basis. This is the kind of stuff that drives people away from the hobby….Ever wonder why people with some truly incredible cars rarely bring them out?????? Keep in mind this car is more than a factory delivered Copo car w/ stripes added, it's a 9562 Copo Chevelle w/ Harrell mods!
See Roger's old note below, surely some far more technical stuff included than what would've been done at Allen Chevy!

Seems if DHPC had a network of dealers selling his modified cars, it would be wise to have trained at least one of the techs there. Those performance tuning schools where pretty popular in the late 1960 and 1970's.
There were a lot of good techs at the dealer back then. A time when there was no scan tool to tell you what was wrong.
A real shame in this all. I can see why the pool of people wanting to own a DH car these days is very limited.

Which I will say again is a real tragedy. There are two sides to every story and many reasons for parties to do what they do and protect their interests for which I cannot sometimes blame especially with so many clones being made today. Because of this it has divided the hobby to a large degree. That in itself is life as there will always be two people that will never agree. What is such a shame though is when the car is the one to suffer. The Harrell cars as well as other types did nothing wrong to deserve the negative attention and I think it is really sad that just because one owns a Harrell, Gibb, Yenko, etc, made car and some people don't get along that the car is the one that takes the blame and suffers for it and in many cases is shunned from some shows or discussions. They are all great cars as well as having great history and started by great men. The fact that some people cannot get along today should not give the cars gets a bad name. Unfortunately, that is not the case.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but just can't keep my mouth shut.
What this boils down to is the definition(S) of a DHPC Car.
Is this a conversion car? Based on what has been presented probably not.
Does it have something/anything to do with DHPC? Probably,IMHO.
Is it a bad a$$, cool Super Car? Most definately!
I remember not long ago that I was trying to purchase a very special Camaro wherein the original owner stated and certified via an affidavit that it was a true DHPC converted car. (The original owner!)
The story behind the car was aweswome.
The people who hold themselves out to be the authenticators and certifiers of such cars said the story and car were bogus.
Guess what.......they were completely wrong. It wasn't the first time and certainly wasn't the last!
Roger it's your car. Call it what you want and let's go out and have some fun.
I think the fact this is a Kansas City Leeds assembled COPO Chevelle,is incredibly significant.
Quite possibly the only one assembled there,or last one standing today & trumps it's DH provenance.

Like all the others have said, you know what it is, you bought it new ...
