Thanks for the offer Tom.
I have one. are Novas on the gas pedal like chevelles?

WILMASBOYL78
01-07-2013, 03:52 PM
Donnie...I forgot about that on Chevelles

...the 68/69 Novas were on the carburetor...like the Camaros. Switch to gas pedal took place early in the 70 model year.

Your project looks very nice...good luck.

Donnie, doesn't the engine code decal belong on the rt side valve cover? That's the way I've understood it. Looks great. It will be a shame to drive that rod up and down rt 80 in the snow huh?

Donnie

Thanks!

Bill, I've seen it both ways and I always thought Driver side to be right <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/dunno.gif <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/hmmm.gif

maybe someone with a survivor can chime in.

sending all that white stuff out east enjoy it. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

Donnie,

I'm pretty sure the survivors have the decals on the back of the passenger side valve cover. Grady showed me several BB Vette valve covers with the stickers still on. Those were right side valve covers. Also, his stickers were red lettering over white background.

I have only ever seen them on the rear of the passenger cover.

Mr. Chevy
01-09-2013, 07:01 PM
The red lettering with white background was used I believe through 69. For 70 and up it is the yellow background with the black lettering like the restoration decals are...

I made up some of the red lettering and white background decals for my 69 and they came out good....

just to let you guys know. I've got a white with red letters valve cover decal on the way and I'll put it on the passenger side.
also the body will be reunited with the frame Sunday. I'll send pics to Mr. Vasic.

And I am still holding his driveshaft hostage <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif I just have to put the stripes back on it and it will be finished. I need to get the oil off that Quanta puts on to preserve it otherwise the paint for the stripes won't stick.

Yes, Dave did shoot the trunk. He has his own special technique he uses. He also shot the trunk on my convertible when he painted it.

Wow,

This car tugs at my heart strings, my first car at 15 years old was a white Beaumont with a Chevelle front clip SS396 badges, and black Chevelle interior. It looked like a white Chevelle other than the tail lights, etc.

Beautiful craftsmanship. be proud.

Guys, thanks for the warm welcome.

I'm actually an avid RC boat racer have scale hydroplanes(all electric). Set a few oval records here and there. Getting back into the car hobby after 25 year absence(marriage, kids, college etc). Closing in on retirement with the General so i figured i better get my 71 SS Convertible done. Just finishing up the chassis & powertrain resto `ICE NINE' is doing the body & paint.

I'm likin it already Donnie. I have a special thing for white cars, we used a donar white car(southern car)underbody to repair my rusted out SS convertible. It was a monster project but keep the car all OEM GM panels.

Hey Bill I do work at the Tech Center and like the big boats(what do you have?) especially watching the Hydros on the Detroit River and Offshore on St.Clair.

----Ken,,,I live just south of Marine City and of course am always at the St.Clair races. Its become a really great event, dont you think?
----As for boats I have a couple of old Donzis, and my favorite, a 1972 Fino 30. Google Finomarine.com and tell me what you think. Mine is the dark blue one listed at the top under Bill Stephens (my name was entered wrong). The restoration of the Fino kind of slowed down my car endeavors the last couple of years, but its done now, thank God!!!.......Bill S

This car is going to be a killer.

Very similar car to an acquaintance of mine up here in Canada. His originally had the black vinyl top but he left it off, otherwise the only difference when they left the factory is that his was a 4 speed car. (His is one of 201 documented Canadian L78 Cars, Whoot Whoot)

Donnie,

A little word of caution on the dome light... Make sure there is no chrome plating on the base where the screws come in contact with the roof brace. It will short out and continue to blow the fuse or arc which you don't want to happen. I had to sand it off to prevent it from arcing.

OK, I promised Donnie I would post these pics for him. I finished his driveshaft finally. I had Quanta restore it, then installed new Made in USA Precision U Joints and striped it. I put the stripes back exactly as I found them on the drive shaft...not perfect. I took measurements of distance and width of each one and noted the colors.

I really don't know any of the fellows commenting on this car. I had the pleasure of meeting a few of the members over the weekend at the SLS. Great bunch of guys!!! Grady, Al G., Bill Rose, and of course Brian and Joe S., although I don't think they posted on this restoration. Donnie, like I said I haven't had the pleasure of meeting you, but I read this thread from start to this page and all I can say is WOW!!! You are indeed doing one FANTASTIC job on this car. The car reminds me of a DW/Black vinyl '69 SS396 that a guy I knew had back when I was a teenager. His car had a 4:56 rear and he hated it. Well it was just what I was looking for to use in my '64 Cutlass. Dig this---we swapped drum-to-drum even up. We did the swap and boy! did it wake up my little Olds. He was tired of not being able to drive his car because of the stiff gears, and I wanted exactly that rear because I was racing mine a little. His rear was a hair wider, but it worked because I only had 7" wheels with 7" M$H slicks. The one that went in his car was a little more narrow, but only barely noticeable with the stock SS 5-spoke wheels. Enough of my old Olds story. Anyway, your car looks absolutely superb and I thought I would give credit where it is due. GREAT JOB!!!!!

I googled the word pale, and I can agree, if you mean white is more pale than say Garnet Red.

Definition of pale
adjective
1light in colour or shade; containing little colour or pigment:

Back in the 80's and 90's it was not cool to have dealer emblems on cars. That has changed and now it is REALLY cool to have them on the car. Put it on! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/smile.gif

Nice piece for a great Chevy Donnie!!! If Bobb put them on with posts, I would put it on the same way. Did you see any evidence with the original trunk lid?

P.S. another thot.... if Bobb had license plate frames in '69 you could go that route if it just KILLS <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/crazy.gif you to drill the holes. O.K. Thanks for the help looks like i'll be getting the drill out.

2nd owner told me he took the Bobb emblem off the tail panel when he did one of his 4 repaints.
I found this during tare down.

Sam, I did that so if I ever got a Bobb emblem I could match up the pin width.
all I had to go on was the 2nd owner saying it came from Bobb.

I now have paper work to back that up.

If you ever want to remove the emblem in the future, it has to be in the absolute easiest place to repair on the car.

I'd put it on and wear it proudly.

Rick, they were Quanta. if the car never sees any rpm's there fine.
I ran it up testing things out and lost them.

Rick,

Most of the cars that you and I restore - are mostly Trailer Queens....you won't find many weekend drag cars or PSMCDR guys using Quanta Belts.
It's a great factory correct product....just not good for over 6000 rpm.

I tried the Quanta belts on my Chevelle & Camaro and had the same twisting problem at high RPM. So worried it would damage the curved neck radiator I switched to Napa belts also.

Sounds and looks good for sure. I had an old time mechanic take one of my cars for a ride. He came back and said son you need what I used to call a California tune up. I was like really what is that. He said that's what we called it when the gas pedal was hard to push down.... and what did he do? He put a lighter return spring on the carburetor. I was like really how many people did you charge for that. He just laughed....
