We went to Apache Junction last night and picked up a 454 for my nephew Taylor's Chevelle...complete from carb to pan
It's a 3999289 block with a casting date of F1173. The heads are 353049's with a casting date of D1773...
The block has a stamp of 0702TRK (I think) that decodes to a 1973 240 HP engine that was in a chevy truck (in this case a 4x4) and was mated to a Turbo 400...
From what the guys on Team Chevelle said...this is a great foundation for a good 454. Low compression that will run on pump gas...great heads...and a high nickel block (whatever that means...LOL)
This engine is totally complete...and had compression in the cylinders of 135-140 across all eight.
This should be fun...here are a few pics

Bruce, that's a great foundation for a VERY strong street engine. Those '73-'74 454's have excellent potential with their #781 or #049 oval-port cylinder heads and are one of my favorite foundations for a great engine. Have a reputable shop put the larger 2.19/1.88 valves in the heads, punch the cylinders out .060 for a big 468 CID, keep the cast crank and 3/8 rods with ARP bolts, slide in a Comp Cams 288 Street Roller with a Performer RPM dual plane intake and 850 Holley and this thing will run 11.40's all day long in a decently prepared car. This a great combination that has been copied MANY times over because of it's brutal effectiveness. John Lingenfelter and I came up with this great combination while out on my pontoon boat a long time ago and it just flat out works. He was absolute genius in the pursuit of power.

Mark, cool info. I appreciate you sharing http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif
The engine is going into my 16 year old nephew's Chevelle. I think we're going to keep it on the mild side for now...maybe just add a slightly better than stock cam http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Pump gas...not too crazy, ya know? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/headbang.gif

http://i852.photobucket.com/albums/ab89/4onthefloor/BBCswap004.jpg (http://s852.photobucket.com/albums/ab89/4onthefloor/?action=view&current=BBCswap004.jpg) I scored this "Factory replacement" motor that was changed by the Chevy Dealer ..Back in the days.. it was in a 1973 Montecarlo & the motor had REALLY low miles , The original owner put a Hei on it.. everything else was NEW..even the Qjet... All i did was put a Nice Dual plane intake -Small primary Hedman hedders-Factory point ignition& a holley 800 And its all hooked up to a 4 speed with 4:10 gears, This thing is a TORQUE monster ,Lots of fun for what it is& im still running the factory Cam in it..Also its got the 781 heads & "high" nickel block... So you GOT a Nice engine For a Decent price http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Most of the 73 TRK blocks have steel cranks with a 2 bolt block, I have 6 of them and only one is cast.
