Thanks Damien! It's been a few years that I have been working on it. Budget and time constraints, but it will be out this year. By all means, it's not perfect at all. In other words, it's not a MACAN car, but I've had tons of fun doing it. And I'm just a young guy.

Took the Nova out for an "unofficial" first 5 mile ride today. I'm quite impressed with all of my math. Temp is good, oil pressure is good, sound is great, and she seems to get up and go! Plowman helped with an over the phone alignment last night. She's pretty close. I know the red lines give a bit, but it is better than what it was! Summer here we come!

Hmm? Haven't thought of that. I still need to break her in. I hear that my rear end isn't whining, so that's a good sign! With the right tools, a book and some guidance, anything can happen. I need to readjust the carb and timing. Had a bit of pinging. 89 Octane from Sheetz. Not sure if it's the junk gas or what? I think this Nova should do better than a 13.8 in the quarter mile? Taching about 2200 at 50mph and the oil pressure was at 45psi. Running around 185-190 °F.

Any suggestions?

Thanks pxtx! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

Registered and insured as of today. I have to finish up a few things and get it inspected, then work out some bugs. Hopefully it's nothing I can't fix? I will never buy another glass hood, I can tell you that much!

Thank you everyone for all the Awsome comments. I truly do appreciate all the kind words and help. This has been a long time project that is almost to total completion. I respect everyone that has done this, or does it for a living! This hobby is not something that is done over night or in a 30 minute tv show. This is a labor of love and not for the light hearted. Time and money! She may not be perfect, but it's my first nut and bolt and I am very proud of what I have accomplished, especially from all the friends that I have made over the years on this site! I know that if anyone sees this car, out at shows or on the road, they will know that NovaJed is behind the wheel! Or someone stole it and in that case, CALL THE COPS!

Don't be afraid to come say hello if you see me, well namely the car, but I shouldn't be too far away!

Thanks again Yenko.net for all the info and support on this build! Time to enjoy it!

The cars are 30% of it all, but the other 70% has become more about who is behind the wheel.

Ok, so I have just about 200 miles on it thus far, and tore up a repro alt belt. 300 more miles to go before I readjust the valves and take it to Maple Grove! Well, maybe I need radials first? But I think this one will be faster than the last. Who has a helmet I can borrow?

PxTx
05-07-2014, 11:44 AM
Slicks on some Nova friendly whees and a helmet. You say when and where. This car is overdue for some action shots and a vid. Gonna run it at Atco in a few weeks too, right?

Nova Jed
05-13-2014, 01:45 AM
Ok, so I had a trans leak and narrowed it down to a bad yoke or seal. Turns out, the bushing wasn't in all the way. Not my doing and the needle and seat got stuck, which left me sit. Nothing $8 and 5/8 wrench and a screwdriver couldn't fix. Had it been 18 years ago, I would be flipping out.
Plowman helped with an "over the phone" alignment and we weren't 2 tenths of a degree out from the computer. Toe was out, but I knew that.

Rev-Pol coil is mounted securely to the firewall too.
Manually shifting the automatic proved to make the car run quicker and I broke the detent cable adjusting it. Live and learn I guess? A new one is on the way!

I snapped a few pics of Jed's Nova. It really is a beautiful, Day 2 ride. It will be an excellent opportunity for someone to get a top quality cruiser. My favorite part about this car is that it is a true Day 2 build with genuine parts, zero modern compromises and despite what some might think, it exceed expectations. It made simple work of the 100 trip down to Atco. Hope to see some performance runs before she finds a new owner.

For those keeping score, those Cragar G/T's on the front with the radials are yet another set Jed has, so the bias redline can get swapped on at anytime he feels like it. Arrived with the slicks in the trunk swapped them on before tech.

The numbers weren't satisfactory to me, so I went back through the distributor and found that my advance plunger had the leather chewed off the end of it and I never maxed out my advance weight plate. Swapped in a non vac advance distributor and readjusted the timing. Now it likes 16 degrees initial and what a difference!

Marlin, do you know how many times I have driven by there and wanted to do the same very thing you just did? About 100 times. I would love that sign! Not very many Jeds in this world. And I'm named after the most famous, non biblical, one of them all. Jed Clampet. True story.

Friday at Maple Grove, weather permitting. Dialed in a factory distributor to give me better advance. I hope to do a little better than a 14.5. Need to get those 60ft times down. Let's see what 36 degrees does for me all in by 2000rpm?

Like I was told by so many people, I have a combination, I just have to dial it in. I don't know that getting the distributor dialed in will drop me a half of a second, but who knows?

Same here Jed, I've driven by that sign and now that it's an empty car lot - figured I'd better snap a pic before it's too late. How do we get that sign for you????

Your distributor tune might very well get you close to the 13's! My Deuce was like that, better timing curve exposed a fuel stumble - those 2 things put me close to the 14 teens with Gardner exhaust, E70's and leaf spring clamps!

novadude
06-10-2014, 02:43 PM
I don't know your exact combo, but you should have no problem getting that car in the 13s.

I had a '70 Nova that would run 14.2s all day long (50+ passes) with a combination so simple and cheap it was ridiculous.

Engine started as 1978 350 12cc dish piston short block w/ 100k+ miles on it. Original rings and bearings never touched. All the other stuff below was new and added to this shortblock.

Fresh '73 993 76 cc heads with light bowl cleanup (~8.4:1 compression ratio)
204/214 .420"/.442" generic "RV" cam.
Performer RPM intake
Q-jet
Stock points distributor
1.6 roller tip Comp rockers
1-5/8" cyclone headers - 2.5" exhaust, flowmasters
TH350 from a '77 malibu wagon with whatever stock converter came with it from the junkyard.
8.5" 10-bolt - 3.08 w/ a junkyard posi from an 80s van
'73 camaro 14x7 "square hole" rally wheels with 215/70R14 BFG radial T/As on all 4 corners.

No tricks - full interior with buckets and console, stock weight car with the spare and a toolbox in the trunk. I drove it daily at the time and would go to the track on weekends. Like clockwork, it always ran in the 14.2-14.3 range @ 97-98 mph @ a 1200 ft elevation track (Keystone raceway near Pittsburgh).

Really "bland" combination of parts that all just seemed to work for whatever reason.

Well, no Maple Grove today, but there is Cecil County tomorrow! If anyone on the site goes, don't be afraid to say hello. My cell number will be in the car with the Smurf. The car isn't totally done, but I have been a busy man. I hope to post some pictures of a special little treat. I hope all goes well and thanks for all your support SYC!

My Friday the 13th wound up being today. Drove all the way to Cecil with no problems. Get through tech inspection and back to the pits, the car doesn't want to run. Burnt solenoid and possibly some really bad gas. Good thing is, I talked to Ed Hedrick. Wish I would have been in a better frame of mind to get him to sign some things, but he did like the NMW shirt and the Jenkins hat. Not a very happy day for me.

Spent the last week going through some stuff. Hit 1000 miles on the car. Replaced a burnt solenoid and a bad condenser. Reworked a stock dizzy and changed secondary springs. Runs a ton better. I hope to run it in the next couple of weeks to see what she does now. Updates ahead!

Live at Maple Grove! 14.2 @ 95mph. Added a few more degrees of timing. Lets see what that does for me?

Happy 4th!

Once again, timing was not my issue. The car started to fall on its face at 3/4 track. Think I may need to relocate a fuel filter or find out how restrictive it is??

Till next time, Plumbers apprentice out!

You may not have enough fuel pump. That's the issue I'm currently having with my Nova. Have you checked your float levels lately as well?

Float levels are good Matt and the pump is a Carter Super Street. It seems as though it may be the pump? Can't imagine that an over the counter pump is better than this one, can it?

I think you are right about the fuel. That pump may be okay if the inlet is unrestricted. Sometimes filters, the size of the inlet line and such can cause a decent pump to become starved. Running at least 1/2 tank could help a bit. How large is the inlet on the pump? If the 120 gph is with a 3/8th line and you have a 5/16...well you get the jist.

3/8 line all the way to the carb. Napa brand fuel filter that is unrestricted. Would a bad gas cap have anything to do with it also?

Ok, I had a visitor today, and he (Plowman) showed me a couple things that I need to change with the supply line and fittings. K.I.S.S! I'm going to change the cheapest and simplest things first. Damn this ethanol enriched fuel!!

I helped him with a few things too!

Fuel systems are easy to "over engineer".

Remember the factory ran good old AC Delco mechanical pumps that fed 780 Holleys on top of 302's, 350's, 396's, 427's and 454's...if the tank pickup is ok and the fuel line is 3/8' front to back...with stock in the carb filers...there shouldn't be an issue.

You could be experiencing some vapor lock...gas cap vented? or not?

I would start at the back and work forward...

Yes sir! Did that, but haven't had true time at the track to verify.

Well, I haven't taken my grandmother for a ride and I haven't shown it to the previous owner. I must do that. Thanks for the reminder Paul!
