A lot of the chutes these days are air activatied and are deployed by a button on the steering wheel as you saw. Always preferred a lever and cable manually activated myself. Not much fun when someone forgets to turn the bottle on <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/no.gif

Damien

Dave Connolly is still with Cagnazzi Racing but has a full time drive now that Johnny Gray is the sponsor. The last couple of years he was Erica's crew chief as well as driving at the occasional event.

I have a feeling a lot of the NHRA is going to be different due to the rising costs and lack of sponsership. I can't say I'm surprised at any of it.For the costs associated with running a team, I can't imagine how much revenue you need to bring in to remain profitable. It's all about the dollars anymore. What happened to the ADRL? Could be the rise of Sportsman classes?

No more Mike Edwards either....sold everything during the off season...
IMO, will be embarrassing if in the future, on Sunday, there are bye runs due to less then 16 cars entered in the pro classes. This past weekend there were only 17 PS cars entered, 19 in both TF and FC. Next weekend there are 16 TF, 17 FC and 18 PS. Maybe the numbers will grow as the season progresses, but normally they go the other way, as teams on limited budgets run out of parts, and $$$.
Also of concern to NHRA (I would think) his past weekend Superstock and Stock were full, but this coming weekend only about 48 slots out of the 60 allowed are filled.

In my opinion both organizations need to get back to their roots and make the cars / sport something that the average guy can relate to. Remember when the cars in NASCAR looked like the cars we all could buy off the showroom floor? (Win on Sunday, sell on Monday). Today they all share the same basic shape with the only distinguishing factor being a different decal package.
The cars in the NHRA (except the sportsman classes) look nothing like the cars they are supposed to represent. While I enjoy watching the pro categories (Top Fuel, Funny Car and Pro Stock) I think Super Stock and Stock are more affordable to run and are something that more enthusiasts can relate to.
Televise these classes and create another class that runs with manual transmissions to highlight driver skill and car set up.

Unfortunately, there's really not much about any type of racing that is "affordable".
My wife and I bracket raced for 7 years, before we had kids. It was alot of fun, but we spent a small fortune during that time, compared to our relative income level.
Speed costs money and anyone that has ever driven a racecar knows that faster is always better. Every upgrade leads to breaking the next weakest part. Just thumb through a Jegs catalog - aluminum rims $300 each, camshafts $350, MSD box $500+. Racing isn't an affordable pastime! Has anyone looked at the cost of fuel and travel lately? Just getting to and from the track could set you back $200+ every event.
As for stock or superstock, or any other "Super" class for that matter, the parts and specifications are so specialized in many cases that they cost more than you'd ever expect. Now, to be competitive... that's a whole different story!
I hate to be the rainy face here, but everything costs more and there's little hope of turning back the clocks. Perhaps the best chance of getting back to cars like we watched in our youth is the pure stock racing, where the car would still have significant value as a restored vehicle. At least that way you'd kind of get a two-for-one investment.
Blair
Any hobby, racing, fishing, golf, hunting, etc can get expensive, if you allow it to consume you. Even the "pure stock" guys.
Though purists do not care for bracket racing, it can be relative inexpensive, as for the most part, bracket racing is more about being consistent then going faster. Just as in the old days, you can drive the family sedan to the track and take home some $$$ and/or a trophy, if you are a good enough driver. I see it all of the time.

How true Tom. Some of my best memories (some including Red Alert when Bill S. owned it) are of when we would head up to Union Grove after working all day on a Wednesday night(about 75 miles each way), raced brackets and/or grudge for fun and then drove the same cars back home and then to work the next day. Most of us had daily driver type muscle cars that were in the 13 second to 15 second range. Don't think anyone ever broke anything bad enough to not make the trip home (lucky) and we always had a blast and even won a few trophies - for the cost of the gas up and back plus the entry fee. Low budget entry level grass roots racing at its finest.

I see the NHRA widdling away. I took a break from it over the last few years as family and business got in the way of it. Went to 2 decent tracks last summer for the weekend like we did 25+ years like at Brainard. It is now a ghost town. I have to admire the Greek...he is still kicking running a small operation compared to the Force Compound. Don't know if I'm just seeing it now, but back in the 70's, 80's and early 90's, it was about who was who had the best tune and secret combo that made them the best and the little things like the monster John Force burnouts cause it was for the people in the stands. Between that, public relations, TNN having the show on tv, that's what made it and made heros out of drivers and teams. Now its about money and business. I noticed it started to slide downhill after Steve Evans passed.
As with most sports today, the success or failure of NHRA will depend on TV ratings, which translates into revenue. Problem I see, some sports have about the same appeal, whether on TV or at the event. Not so with Drag racing, especially the fuel cars.

Well said, we are learning this via Jr Dragsters - and still spend a lot more than we need to just to be able to run right on the 'index' regardless of track conditions, elevation and weather. But, if we wanted to, we could do it cheaper by simply being slower and a little less consistent - and still have a ton of fun!
I would love to see the Stock and Super Stock cars on TV by replacing the qualifying runs from TF dragsters and funny cars..... anyone else prefer this approach?

Marlin - Absolutely on Stock and Super Stock over fuel qualifying. Oftentimes they have a hard time just getting the car to make a good pass , because they're trying so hard to make the show.

Exactly! I'd much rather wait a day and watch Stock & Super Stock elim rounds over Fuel qualifying. I think the only way to make it happen would be to have the Big 3 auto makers involved for advertising during those rounds - how appropriate would it be to break away to a commercial on the new Camaro SS or Z06 Vette after watching the COPO Camaros run??

I used to be so upset when they would spend so much air time

I raced SuperComp. Even today, sportsman racing is outta control with costs. In 94, my car rolling from ProStart was 40k BEFORE engine, trans, 3rd member and everything else. Today, a chromoly door car bases at 60 grand. No truck, trailer plus everything else you need to compete. And, if you don't have a .005 package, you're going to get your nutz handed to you.
If you have read any of my posts they all have the same theme. Bang for the buck. I live in a very depressed economy and struggle to keep a good job. Last year I worked 4 different jobs after being told the company was closing. I have been in bracket racing for 22 years and really enjoy it as my day off. The track I worked at and raced answered JR dragster with an IHRA approved class called TCR, Teen Championship Racer. We approached IHRA with it as cheaper way to get kids into racing. My youngest son wanted to do it. I bought a 2 adult owner 1985 Monte Carlo SS for $1,400 and he ran it for 3 years until he turned 16. He then wanted to move up. One of my racers bought a chassis car and I asked what he was going to do with his old car, he said eventually sell it. I ended up buying the rolling chassis for $2,800. We put an $800 dollar engine and a $1,200 trans and converter in it and ran 11.93. Ran 93 octane gas did short burn outs and got almost 2 seasons out of a pair of slicks. We had fun but because of working on 3 other cars I ended up selling my car. I am working with another young man now that wanted to go fast. I found him a 1985 Iroc chassis car for $10,000 running, ran 9.20 at 145. I am now making the car street legal. My point is YOU put what you want into it. Racing is not cheap, yes, I spent $75 a day to race and that was stripped down as cheap as I could go. But the fun was worth every penny. I have met a lot of good people and a lot of a deceased legends. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2014/02/full-13800-9690-im000062.jpg

So I'm watching the Mile High Nationals on TV when they interview Erica. The commentator goes on to say that there is a well known rivalry between Dave Connolly and Erica. I know Dave was her former crew chief but, I had never heard about any bad blood between the two of them. I have noticed how they seem to ignore each other at the top end when they've raced but, I just thought that was intense focus.
Can anyone shed some light as to what took place between those two?
67 Nova Boy

She left to go to Elite Motorsports...that's where it ended. They had a great bond as driver and crew chief but it seems that Elite gave her a better chance to have a full time ride as she sat out 6 races last year so this move was secure for her. Dave was a groomsmen in her wedding so there was allot of friendship lost when she left for Elite Motorsports.
It was the best move for her as there is no room for 4 drivers in one stable and expect to win against your 3 other teammates. She did right by leaving Cagnazzi Racing but she will never forget the things Victor did for her.
Here is Courtney and Erica...sis is a bad ass as well!

It's got to be the epinephrine/adrenalin -- sometimes coming down from a high (like racing. etc.) will cause the brain to go into overdrive ...

Come on!
First she IS a women.
second she is excited.
third like JF she has to promote NHRA and the Sponsors.
Fourth she is a real good driver!
She also maybe the one person that could save Pro Stock drag racing.

Listen to her talk some time...she doesn't do the "UM or so ah" all the time like some drivers. She's smart and talented.
Yes...she talks up her sponcers/God and ALL that help her get to where she is today. Any racer remembers what it's like
to be hungry and fighting for money so let it out every time they get on film. I see her at the track and she is the nicest
person and signs millions of autograph just like most racers do as the appreciate the fans being there. Pro stock is a
declining sport and they need all the help they can get. You can hate her {She like hatters!} or love her but she is doing
well for a first year new team. Ever try to get an autograph from Warren Johnson? Good luck!!
Lets hear who every one likes...Pro stock...Top Fuel...Funny car or Pro stock bike.

Absolutely -- I thought the Grump was going to start throwing wrenches at folks at one race. On the other hand, Bill Helscher (sorry for the spelling) got down and pointed things out as to how to make the suspension work better on my 70 Z-28.
I knew I would ruffle some feathers. It started for me years ago when she got in a staging dual with someone and then proceeded to run her mouth. So I do not have time for her. I like Force but fast forward is great for when they stick a microphone in front of him. I acknowledge she is a good driver, no doubt. The teams record speaks for itself. She will not save Pro Stock. It has become for the rich to play. And Nascar ruined itself years ago with to many rules and calling it a Family sport. It came out of running moonshine. To much political correctness.

Agree 100%. Erica and her team had the best car for most of the year and deserve the win. Curious to learn/read about ELITE's eng program vs Cagnazzi vs ???
WHO is the ELITE eng GURU ?? What does Nick Fieri (sp?) do ??
Are they all using the same CFE heads ?? Does anybody in Pro Stock use SLAWKO heads
as does Bob Book in Comp engines ??
How is it that the racing can be so close in ET but yet ELITE had 1 MPH edge at Pomona.
Salvatore
11-25-2014, 09:13 PM
1 MP equals more HP Chuck. Elite could have 8-10 more HP then the rest. maybe the clutch set-up?

Engine Guru's at Elite Motorsports is Nick Ferri & Jake Hairston and yes...they are using CFE on their 500 CI GM
Horse power is 1400+ at 10,000 red line. Rick and Ricky Jones of RJC have the chassis set up well to gain that ONE MPH
difference. Erica holds the World Speed record at 215.55 and the World ET record ant 6.464 so they have Big Red running and

A lot of the chutes these days are air activatied and are deployed by a button on the steering wheel as you saw. Always preferred a lever and cable manually activated myself. Not much fun when someone forgets to turn the bottle on <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/no.gif</div></div>

Personal opinions:
1. Love Erica; never was a fan of Jeg. Nobile & Skilman would be good team mates. Jeg is probably bringing sponsorship $$ and will try to steal the show. (Ego)
2. I'm so old I've watched Mike Dunn his entire career. He LIVES drag racing. Tony will probably be good in the booth but Mike Dunn has more charisma and I think probably has more respect overall with the fans and the competitors.

Will be interesting too see what if anything FOX does with the Sportsman side of NHRA....
NHRA does next to nothing for its sportman racers. The $$$ payout has stayed pretty much the same
