Thanks, guys!! Going to dig around for the buildsheet today and get some roller tires installed.

Supertracker, I know my posts are boring, and I'll try to lighten it up next time. <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

Big box of parts just showed up for that T-Bird, so need to jump on that, update the thread, jump back in on Super Bee, update thread. Oh, I think I have to go to work somewhere in there too. Maybe I can just call in too busy for work? <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/dunno.gif

Scheduling: "This is Kristen, how can I help you First Officer Molnar?"
Me: "Yeah, um, Hi. Listen, I know I have a trip tomorrow, but, frankly, I'm just too busy to come in to work."
Scheduling: "OK, call us when you're not so busy"
Me: "Great, thanks. Almost didn't have enoough time to make the call. I have two threads on Yenko.net I needed to update!" <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/hmmm.gif <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/bs.gif

Here we are after I was able to break loose the two frozen wheels. Mud dawbers locked up the right rear and front left wheels! Headed to get temporary rubber put on so I can roll her up onto the lift. Oh, and a new hood and decklid (the only rotted pieces on this car!) so it'll be ready to go on the resto in another year after the Bee.

IIRC, they do not get the decal. What chew trying to do here, boy? Start one of them arguments?? <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/wink.gif

Nah!! That's doing it backwards! But you'll be happy to know that the one area that was severely rotted, the hood, was replaced today but I zapped out the support structure under the hood and saved the skin! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif That'll make some nice garage art!

Something unique I found is the Body Buck Tag. Attached to the radiator support with one sheet metal screw, it lists my VIN and options my car came with.

http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2016/09/full-18993-48866-20160915_070254.jpg

I was under the impression that these were attached after paint but before the engine bay was painted black. Well, after I soaked my tag in some general purpose solvent for a bit, I was excited to see a few "neat" things...

http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2016/09/full-18993-48867-img_20160916_002449.jpg

The tag shows clearly that it has the Highland Green paint on it, and this is actually a Mercury Door tag used as my Body Buck Tag!!!

The tag decodes to my car with the VIN listed, 63B is the Luxury Deluxe Interior, R is Highland Green, and 409 is the PB (paint/body) sequence/gate number. Line #2 has 6F, Saddle Interior, PB for Power Brakes. Next lines shows GT for the GT group, ST for the AM-8Track Stereo, and SC for Safety Convenience Group. The last line shows FDS which is the Fold Down Seat. The upside down 4 and H-2 maybe inspector's stamps

Apparently, the Detroit plant where my car was built was on a "recycling" kick, according to one book on the Body Tag subject for Mustangs, for a short period of time and they made the tags out of surplus door tags from the other makes. Cougars and Mustangs came down the same line. So how cool is that? WAY COOL!!!! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

A Quad-fecta (I'm pretty sure that's a word.... <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/dunno.gif ) of pictures that I got with the car. This is when it was registered in the 80s in Ohio. It had a "Day 2" exhaust installed that exited in front of the rear wheels like the 65 Shelbys had. Matter of fact, I still have the exhaust system with Ford Part number stickers on it! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

Ok, so I might have taken the Bee off the rotisserie ( I'll update that here in the next few days). And I might have had the interior already out, sort of, looking for that build sheet. And the plasma cutter was already plugged into the wall....sooooooooo <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/hmmm.gif

Its a real simple process putting in a whole floor. Just some trimming along the edges to do, clean up the adjacent pans, make sure the metal is straight, place the floor in, mark a line around the edge for proper pan depth along the rockers, mark plug weld holes, remove pan, drill out plug well holes, place pan back in car, drill out pilot holes for self tapping screws to secure floor to rockers and frame rails, screw down floor, weld, grind welds flat, spray red oxide primer on floor, post on Yenko.net <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/grin.gif See? Easy! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/thumbsdown.gif

Cheers <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/beers.gif

I replaced the decklid since that suffered the same fate as the hood with rust, but other than that, this is the only rust spot left on the car to deal with. A very small patch on the outside and a tad on the outer wheel house. The trunk drop off is mint! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif. So I guess once this is done next month I'll send it to the blasters and have him do his magic. And if history has taught me anything, it'll be that when I get it back it'll have holes all over the place and need rockers, a roof, door jamb, and the new floor I just put in will need replacement! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/rolleyes.gif. Love this hobby!!! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

Looking like after the clean up and grind down, I"m just about ready for the new pan to go in. The inner rockers on these Mustangs are a glavanized finish. I'm thinking when it comes time to weld it's gong to be a little bit of a splatter fest.

http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2016/12/full-18993-54000-dscn2226.jpg
http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2016/12/full-18993-54001-dscn2228.jpg

Frames ground down, and everything was in good shape internally, sans some surface rust. I used some rust converter to stop the rust and then after a day of sitting, sprayed a liberal (lousy liberals) amount of red oxide primer inside the rails....

http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2016/12/full-18993-54002-dscn2229.jpg
http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/pics/usergals/2016/12/full-18993-54003-dscn2230.jpg

Overall, not too bad. The rear floor sections were in great shape except for right above the right rear frame rail. I'll cut that out and the new floor will join up against that section so I can stitch weld that in place. No seams visible from underneath! The goal is a factory look (of course...what else did you expect?!?! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/hmmm.gif ) When it comes times to weld the new pan in I'll grind away the primer where the surfaces are joined so I have nice bare, fresh, clean metal. Once that's all done and everything is solid, another round of correct tint red oxide primer! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif Once the main pan is in place, I'll start the rest of the teardown of the car an hopefully have it on the twirler next month and off to the blaster! WOO HOO!!!!! <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/headbang.gif All the areas I'm missing will be taken care of by the media blast dude, and the red primer now is just to protect the metal while it sits in the 1000% HOUmidity of HOUston <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/thumbsdown.gif

Man....what am I doing? I'm not finished with one and starting in on another! Anyone have a 69 Judge they want to send my way so I can take a whack at a GM product? <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

Cheers <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/beers.gif

where you cut the rear floor around the frame rail is a good idea. I just did a 1 piece floor in a 67 and the stamping was short on both sides where it attaches to inner wheel well.
Looks like a solid car. The quarters on these Mustangs fit real nice. I replaced both quarters outers and a roof skin on the Shelby I'm working on the panels all fit exceptional.

No kidding? Good info! I'm hoping to get the floor in later this month, the week after Christmas. It's sitting against the wall waiting to go in. Hopefully end of January it'll be on the rotisserie and off to the blaster. These holidays get in the way <<GRAEMLIN_URL>>/biggthumpup.gif

The 1 piece floor will go through the passenger side door and you will need a little help, another set of hands did wonders for me. I couldn't get the 1 piece floor up from the bottom of the car. I replaced both toe boards both torque box extensions added the passenger side torque box early 67 didn't have them I guess. The owner wanted it installed. Overall every sheet metal part we got for the car fit pretty good. I have a bunch of pictures If you get into a bind on something.

So with Bullitt fever hitting the waves, I figure I better get going on the Stang-a-Roo since 2018 is fast approaching and I'll be bringing this car to MCACN next year!:cool2:. I had to back off of it to make sure there were no snags on the Bee, and now that it's looking pretty close to being finished, I can start back into it. I'll finish the floor installation next month and will have the car stripped down and on the rotisserie. In the meantime, I got the numbers matching engine on the engine stand and talked in depth to a builder about repairing my block. It doesn't seem like it's going to happen. One cylinder has two cracks and those cracks are connected at the top about 1" down from the top part of the cylinder. He's pretty sure it's not a good candidate for a sleeve. I'm pretty bummed by I don't want to build an engine and have it leak later on down the road. So I think I'm going to build the engine with my spare block, which just happens to be from another 68 Mustang GT, and continue the quest to have this fixed at a later point. I'm just not sure it can be done. :dunno::confused2:

Now that the Bee is wrapping up, I'm turning my attention to the ole' Stang-a-tang. I've had several before this one: 66 Coupe (my first car), 67 GTA Fastback, three other 67 Fastbacks that were turned into 68 GT500 tributes, a Mach, and a Boss. Both of which I flipped and really didn't do too much to other than clean and detail. So I'm starting to dig into the details like I know on the Mopars, and it's been an interesting road so far. Lots of good info out there and just like the other makes, lots of confusion.

I for one was under the impression that the Mustangs were all Red Oxide primer underneath. Well, not so. Dearborn was one of those plants that eventually used leftover paint from the day before, all mixed together, and sprayed on the underside. Commonly called "batch paint", and not "slop gray" that is used for other parts on the car. This resulted in a wide range of dark grays, to black, to even a metallic style green/silver/brown. I sprayed my rails with Red Oxide thinking this was correct for my car, which, after some investigative investigation, found that it's not!

My car has undercoating sprayed all underneathe and everywhere I scraped it off, found a very dark, dark, blue/gray...almost black paint under it. It's very hard to see in the pics, since it looks black, but taking flakes out into the sun reveals a very dark blue/gray color. NEAT!!!!!:grin::grin:

Here's a shot where the fuel line protective shroud on the Driver's side rear torque box was bolted down, and you can see the primer color. No Red Oxide evidence anywhere on my car. The other picture if the rear frame rail on the passenger side.:biggthumpup::biggthumpup::biggthumpu p:

And lastly, what the heck is up with my darn camera!!?!?!??! I can't seem to get a good shot lately:dunno::dunno::dunno:

Fortunatley, I have a gallon of leftover epoxy primer from the Bee that I can add some more black to, a well as maybe some blue/green, to get the right shade. That color is also on the transition panel over the axle, rear frame rails, and gastank/trunk floor panels. Neat stuff!!!!

Although owning my own Fred Flintstone mobile is tempting, I figure for safety purposes, I better install a floor. So, in goes a one piece pan! Easiest was to install this was on the lift from the underside. With the doors on, no way from a geometry standpoint(and I'm no good at math...I'm gooder at English:hmmm:) that was going to fit in that tiny opening. More pics on the camera and these are just a few from the phone, but the floor has been in and out several times to drill plug welding holes, and it's the only way to install a full pan for sure!

Here's with the pan laying in, screwed down, and a few welds in place to make sure it's aligned correctly. I used a torch and a hammer for persuasion in some areas to make sure no gaps and sheet metal screws cinched it up perfectly! Last one piece I installed was a 68 Convertible and of course, that was nice and easy form the top!

Today I'll finish the welds, grind smooth, prime, and seam seal. After that, gas tank comes out for a small rear crossmember patch, and I'll start in on the lower driver's quarter panel patch. That'll be it for the rust on this one! I'll have it disassembled and off to the blaster at the end of the month! I think I may be the first person that has already registered for MCACN 2018!!!!:hmmm::biggthumpup::crazy:

And yes, all the red oxide was sanded off for a clean, metal to metal surface to weld up against. And notice the car in relation to the other, NICE, car....."No Bees were harmed in the filming of this floor pan installation"

As I'm researching more into the Mustang Realm, I've found a few cool things that were changes mid 68. Notice the real side marker bezels on my car. They consist of a reflector and a surrounding painted bezel. Sometime around February due to a strike at Ford and a cost cutting measure, 68s switched to the 68 Cougar side marker bezel. Also, early in December, the lower center dash pad, commonly called a knee pad, was removed. March timeframe, the A-Pillar trim pads were removed. My car was a late December build. I have A-Pillar pads, no knee pad, and the reflector and bezel, non-Cougar, style rear side marker.

Neat stuff!!!!!:smile::smile:

Floor in, primed up, and now I'm onto the remaining rust parts. A small patch on the lower driver's quarter panel, and part of the rear brace that the gastank mounts to, and the car will be rust free!:eek2: After I pulled the tank I removed the sending unit. It's a rather unique one since it has the low fuel warning sensor on it. I'm going to send this out for a rebuild which, surprisingly, can be done and even more of a shocker is the fact that the float arm still moves freely!!! But, meanwhile, back in the trunk, I noticed a nice factory curtain that might have got past Quality Control:biggthumpup:

Ford..."Quality is Job Run!":tongue::tongue::tongue:

I also laid out the exhaust system that came with the car. Part numbers still on the pipes to boot! Although I can't seem to reference them based on those numbers. I thought it was for a smallblock 289/302 since the 289 is in the part number, but they mate up to the factory 390 exhaust manifolds.:dunno: They aren't going back on the car, but it still would be nice to know what vintage they are.

In continuing the continuation of continuing on, I continued the teardown of the Stang after welding up the lower back quarter and rear trunk brace/gas tank holder down thingy. I know, pretty technical terms I'm throwing out here, but I've set the trend with another thread, and this type of nonsensical banter is to be expected  I haven't done a Mustang in a long, long time, nor have a done one with the Convenience Group, so there's a bit more wiring involved which means plenty of pics to lose between now and reassembly:dunno:

Time to get out some plate steel and start making braces for mounting it up onto the twirler!!!:biggthumpup: And, get out the baggies and boxes to get all these parts up into the storage area on top of the mezzanine, that was JUST freshly cleaned up from Bee parts!:frown: At this rate, I'll never have a clean shop!!!!!:burnout:

Fear not! I have been working on the Stang-a-tang, the Stang-a-roo, the Rus-Stang!!!! With the Bee wrapped up, and having bought another car that needed some immediate attention, I got a little side tracked but now I'm back on track. What track, I'm not sure. Maybe it's the tracks of the Crazy Train for even thinking I should do another restoration!:confused2: But, I've quickly come to realize that if I don't do it, it's not getting done. So time get this thing on the twirler and scrape off some undercoating and start blasting off the old paint/rust/mud dauber homes.

What I've found was a few Highland Green overspray patterns, three different color primers used on the underside, and a few factory paint markings:burnout: What's left after all this? As you can see, a big ole' pile of used up undercoating that weighs about 5lbs. Anyone need any? I'll sell cheap...NOS Ford Undercoating: Just melt down and reapply!!!:eek2::eek2:

So what next?? Blasting time. And being the cheapskate I am, I decided I'm going to do this myself since the blasters around here are, should we say, LESS than reliable. I masked off my paint booth with some drop plastic and put a few fans in there for dust evacuation. Oh, and don't worry, the Bee was nowhere around (stored in another shop that dust, tool and more importantly, PEOPLE (me) Free!!!!) So far, VERY happy with the results. This was just the first pass to get most of the heavy stuff off. I'll probably have to go over it a few times to get it totally cleaned up. I use two blasters, the one you see in the picture and a hand held Speedblaster gun. They both really work well. It's the compressor that's the probelm. I really need a two stage air compressor to keep up. HEY? I need another tool!!!! :naughty::naughty:

Welp....it was a slow going, and fortunately, I didn't have to worry about blasting the floor pans. Here's an action shot in my full "2001 A Space Odyssey" get up! Due to the Hunnit Percent Humditiy here in Houston, the metal was rusting right after I blasted it!:dunno:

Weight of Dave before blasting: 165lbs. Weight of Dave after blasting: 152lbs. That's a net loss of 13lbs. What'd I lose? Oh, that's common sense as to why I do things like this!!!!!:confused2::dunno: But the results are worth it!!!!! No more rust, no more grime, no more gunk!!!!

I decided to go with the Red Oxide primer look for a number of reasons. Mainly, all the early Mustangs I've seen that had the Red Oxide underneath always looks sharp with the freshly restored contrasting parts against it. Secondly, I checked with the MCA rules, and even though I won't have the car judged, acceptable undercarriage colors for all Mustangs as Red Oxide, Gray, and Black. So there you go! Decision made and now it's done. I'm diggin' it!!!!!!:headbang:

Soooo....as you can see, only the bottom was primed. Now that it's all done and sealed, I'll be taking a pressure washer and blasting the interior, trunk, and engine bay to remove all the dust/trash that's left over after all of this. Also, I'll remove the doors, glass, and fenders. Once that's done I can blast the engine bay, trunk and parts of the interior. Once clean I'll epoxy prime those areas. Progress, progress! Luckily, everyone at the shop was out of town for the weekend so I was able to get the exterior of the car completely stripped and primed without anyone stopping in to ask for help or chat about things I don't want to chat about. :eek2:.

As you can see for ease of sanding, I left the car assembled. The next phase will be to remove the fenders and doors, then get out the pressure washer and let 3000psi of water pressure coming out of the Turbo 5100 rotary nozzle remove the remaining trash/dirt and grime in the interior and trunk area. Once that's all done I'll spray the interior redoxide and I'll be into the bodywork!

Stay tuned for more...block..block...sand...sand....:frown:

Darrel, your replies are what keeps me going....You...complete..me!!!!!:hmmm:

Diggin' deeper into the Stang-a-Tang, I mounted up the decklid and notice that for the life of me, I couldn't get it from hitting the transition panel between the trunk opening and rear window. I figured this was something of an aftermarket decklid issue. But after looking at the stock one and seeing the same thing, I turned my attention to the rear filler panel. Sure enough...look!:eek2: A nice difference in the gap between that panel and the quarter panel joint. And that's a factory weld!!!! What's one to do? Simple! Get out the grinder, slice the panel, recess, weld, grind smooth, sand with 80 grit, reseal with epoxy, align the decklid. See?!???! SIMPLE!!!!!:frown:

Now that the backside is all lined up, the fenders and doors will come off and I'll start the rust repair on the front side by the battery tray and firewall. Small patches needed on both of those areas. Lots of time off next month so updates a coming fast and furious I tells ya!!!!!:headbang:

Back on the Stang after a break for Bee finalization! I left off with fixing the rear window filler panel, and since then I've completed all the metal work. Another round of epoxy since this has sat so long without being topcoated, and I had combined red and gray epoxy to make the highly coveted "pink" epoxy that we all strive to achieve! :hmmm:. But hey, it was just to cover the floors up after laying down more seam sealer, underside of the roof, and a few other interior panels. Straight Red Oxide all in the trunk:biggthumpup:.

Disassembled the doors, fenders, and blasted the hinges. Reinstalled those so I'd be sure and goof up that perfect factory alignment. Much like the Bee, this is a 50k mile car that spent most of it's life with the doors shut. And much like the Bee, I didn't need to rebuild the hinges. I couldn't believe it either, but they're tight as a Senior Airline Captain's wallet at the bar!

After I got it all primed with DPS3055, I reassembled for easy blocking. Doors, decklid, rear valance, and quarter panel endcaps get painted on the car. The whole front end parts do not. But for ease of blocking them out, it's better assembled. Later this week I'll get the valances primed up and the hood mounted. The engine bay is going to take a few rounds of sanding first. Amazing how many factory runs are in there! I did find three factory markings I'll replicate: a white "C" on the outside of the battery tray area (above the primer, under the undercoating), a yellow "X" on the drivers side outer core support under the black paint, and a white "610" on the lower radiator crossmember on top of the black paint. So freakin ' coooool!

Starting on the smaller parts shows the red oxide primer on the backside of the rear valance. This part was attached to the car with the screw along the top but not the lower end corners. That let the valance hang away from the car during paint. The result? Overspray on the backside and a clear, distinct primer line right where the valance attaches to the car. Mike,

Funny you say that, since the 3M stuff is actually what I use. But when I went to my paint house they were out, so I decided to give this a try. I like it, actually. Most of the time I wind up spilling the dry coat and that stuff gets all over the place!

DCU2021 Mike..Medium reducer. This time, no Mothra landed in the paint! Why you ask? Remember.... he's already entombed in the Bee's fender!

I did a few details on the undercarriage too. Painted the primer circles on the frame areas where it was bolted to the assembly line jig for paint. Also used a brush and more neatly applied the pinch weld blackout.

That's a great compliment Darrell... since you're GIFless...I know you're sincere! I appreciate the feedback and compliments. Thanks so much!!!

...And Dan..... I'm scared now to start the Trans Am...:haha:

Moving forward, it's engine bay time! I masked off what needed to be masked off with proper masking mask off material..:hmmm:... and proceeded to black out what needed to be blacked out with black out paint. I think that's about what I wanted to say:crazy:

So, looking at my undercarriage and seeing survivor cars [same year... same plant] , I took my notes and laid down the funk with proper overspray and sloppy missed spots. Since the bays were painted from the top downward, the bottom of the frame rails, front crossmember, strut rod brackets, engine mounting perches.... all look black when viewed from the top yet show the red oxide underneath. I tried to replicate that and two factory markings I found as well.

Once I get the fenders on, I'll the spray the sound deadener in the wells, transmission tunnel, and firewall/inner frame areas. More to come!

Ok, well...it ain't next week but I started to assemble the body which will make it easier to wetsand and polish. Starting to look like a car! You can see I reattached the body buck tag by the fender, and as I may have mentioned before, my tag is actually a Mercury trim tag. This was part of Ford's recycling process for a few months at the Dearborn plant. My car just happens to have one of those tags! Oh... and I found out that 610 is the second rotation number, and the body buck tag has the first one in the upper right hand corner. A neat thing to see! :cool2:

Now I just need to spend a day and blast a bunch of parts in the cabinet for reassembly. Anyone want to help? :dunno: Mikey? I'm looking in your direction!:worship: I pay good....well...goodly... whatever is half of the hourly rate charged by the proprietor, you get a percentage that's worth half of what the other half is. Some more front end parts, hood hinges, and shiney bolts installed. The wheel lip moldings getting fitted up and they fit surprisingly well. Once I get the hood on and the front sheet metal aligned, it'll come off the twirler and let the wetsanding games begin! And yes.... that's a run/sag/curtain in the clear on the fender in front of the wheel lip and above the marker light. That's for the hired help (me) to wetsand out. Stay tuned for a tutorial on how to fix fender and cowl dents after a freshly painted hood gets dropped on them, and how to blend paint after wetsanding through the clearcoat! :hmmm: See?

I've got one of those T&C transmissions that's been sitting around my shop for about 10 years with all of the parts to rebuild it. There just never seems to be enough time to work on it. I've also got a C7ME block with all of the parts to assemble it. I wish I had a nice '67-'68 Mustang fast back or a '66 Fairlane GT to put them in.

How is the engine work going? Are you going to be able to save the original block?

In continuation of continuing, I continued with some more front end assembly. So when you are alone with nobody to help you, how does one mount up a freshly painted hood on a freshly painted car without getting fresh scratches in the fenders?:hmmm: Call two friends to help? Well, if your friends are anything like my friends, you abandon that whole route and do it yourself since you know there's probably a risk of more carnage if you had these "friends" help!

Luckily, I had an NOS Ford hood mounting brace handy. It's a rare item, seldom seen, and doubles for a Majorette baton should the need arise after assembly!

Original numbers block is saved, Freddie. And.... have another 68 390 out of a GT that's a little later date coded than mine as a spare. Deciding which way I want to build the engine. The intake and heads on a 390 Ford were manufactured from the same foundary that made the anchors for the Mauritania, and I think shot-peened aluminum to look like cast iron is the way to go. Still deciding......

Been doing some detective work while feverishly blasting parts! I lose my big shop here within the week, relocating to a smaller, rental one, in preparations for the move next year to the new crib in the backyard! With that, I lose my beloved paint booth, air compressor, and with that.... blasting cabinet. So I'm blasting all the parts I need to and will refinish them in the new place. My heater box exploded on the stairs, so I figured I'd blast all those parts. Meanwhile, packing and packing....and I found my ratchet!

Motor mount markings, wiper motor markings, date code on the Jack matches my build [jack date coding started in 1967, interestingly enough], and now I'm shipping out the radiator to Bob at Glen Ray who did flawless work on my Super Bee's, so I think he can handle a tiny Mustang radiator! :hmmm:

I've gathered up the engine parts and will be dropping all that off at the builder and the transmission heads to a local toploader specialist as well. Based on all of this stuff, I should be on the road in about.... oh....4 or 5 days from now. :rolleyes2: I'm going to send the carburetor to Eric.

Then I'm off to play the lottery so I can pay for all of this stuff! I'm setting up a gofundme account called "TheYenkoSuperDuperStangatang". Donate what you can!:no::thumbsdown:

Well..... let's see:hmmm: when the car was down to a shell, metal work was a complete one-piece floor, two lower quarter panel patches, and some minor patches here and there. I'd say maybe 60hrs in rust repair metal work. Bodywork, start to finish, is roughly 450hrs. Remember that roof? :rolleyes2: Wetsanding and buffing would be another 40hrs at least. The shop who is doing my Mustang quoted me around 275- 300 hours(after metal panel rust replacement) to put the car in various sealers and primers primer, bondo work, get gaps correct etc , materials, paint and buff and install front window and side windows.

Shop doing my car = $65 per hour. aprox $20k to paint the car (not including rust repair they did)

I had quotes from 3 other shops and they were all within $2-2500k of each other.

The guys quoting me 8k to paint it worked out of their backyard garage at night..no insurance, no guarantee, who knows what quality of materials, I'm sure under the table no taxes paid, who knows when it would get done.

A friend went this route with his street rod. 1/2 of the way through the guy said he has family problems(divorce) and to come get the car within in 2 days as he was moving out.

Thanks men! A few guys asked me what I'm using for polish and my process. So, since I'm famous for instructional and edjumacational threads, let me explain what all went down here.

Wetsanding goes in stages depending on the amount of peel in the paint. If it's heavy, I start will 1000 or 1500. If it looks like a 3rd grader sprayed it [me:hmmm:], then I may hit a small section with 800 depending on how bad it may be. I was lucky with the Stangatang. I actually started with 2000 and in some spots, 2500 since the clear.... for some unknown foreign reason to me.... laid down flat! I think there was a high pressure system overhead while I was painting. More atmospheric pressure means more weight on the clear creating a flatter finish!:rolleyes2::hmmm::bs:

Anyway, this is the door finished to a final 3000 grit. Nice even sheen. If you see little dots, that's clear that you haven't cut (peel) and more sanding is required. This is the first step... long and dirty... but the results are worth it.

Cheers

Step one in the polish process is a foam pad with a gritty compound. The kit I use is by 3M called Perfect-It. It's a series of pads and compounds that can make even guys like me know what they are doing!

Usually this first step is with a wool pad, but the kit has a foam pad now for step one. WAAAAY less splatter and I don't have foam tumbleweeds all over the shop from the blow-off from the pad.

Here is what the initial polish looks like. Notice the swirls and halos. That's ok. This step just gets the deep scratches out for a uniformity. Not a final step.

Cheers
Dave

A12pilot
01-07-2018, 10:49 AM
This is Step 2. The pad is less coarse as is the polish. Notice the swirls are less...halos are disappearing, and the shine is really coming out. Work small sections at a time keeping the buffer flat. Obviously is the curves you use the tip of the pad, but it's best to use a smaller polisher and smaller pad for more confined spots.

Cheers
Dave

A12pilot
01-07-2018, 10:52 AM
And the final polish. All swirls and halos are gone!

I also use a lot of light on the panel when polishing. It really helps seeing the swirls and spots you may have missed.

Hope that helped answer some questions for those who were curious!! More to come....

Thanks guys! 390 is at the machine shop getting cleaned, baked, bored and stroked! Should have it back at the end of the month. I decided on a mild build on the numbers matching block, a little over stock, bringing the cubes to 416. Since I'll be selling the car anyway, always better to claim numbers matching with the engine actually IN the car than "Yeah, it's the original block but its in the trunk".:hmmm:

Man...all the hype over one of the coolest cars ever! Having that car come our answered a lot of questions enthusiasts have about making a replica of that car. Mmmm.....:naughty: thinking.......:naughty: It may be poll time!! To "B" (Bullitt) or NOT to "B"?:hmmm:

So.... moving forward, it's wiring harness spaghetti nightmare time again! Since it's all stock it's really not that bad. I laid out the original harness to match it up with the new harness and two things were clearly different: the fog light harness and the courtesy/convenience warning light harnesses. In the second photo you can see transferring one of the additional harnesses to the new dash harness.

So, step one is mounting the fuse block with all the relays and such. Routing the taillight and forward light harnesses are up next. More too come.....

They're made by Alloy Metal Products. It's what most of the Mustang guys use. I don't know what else they make. For the Mopars, M&H is the way to go! Not sure if Alloy does custom stuff or not or what other makes, if any.

Ha! Yeah...i don't think I'm going to go that far, but ever since the Hero Car has been found I've got Bullitt on the Brain and... much like that Charger.... can't shake it!

Now, you's guys know me. If I'm going to do this into a Hero Bullitt look-a-like, gotta do it right! So in the parts bin are Firestone G70s, stock 2" pipes through the resonators only with straight pipe out the back, 67 Grille, no emblems on the outside, covered back up light holes on the rear valance, blacked out gas cap, 67 Shelby GT500 steering wheel wrapped in black leather, Hurst shifter.

Now, the plan is to make this all reversible, or bolt on,
so when the car gets a new owner it can be bright back to stock easily sans an interior redo. For the rocker moldings, I'll take the car to the vinyl wrap place and have them vinyl wrap them instead of paint for durability and easy removal. Also, I'll have them do the edge of the trunk lid filing the emblem holes but removable later. Fender emblem holes will be filled with painted plugs... again... easily removable. One option my car came with was the center console which won't be reinstalled. The Am 8-Track and the uber rarer convenience group in the center dash will be reinstalled.

Under the hood it'll be stock with all the correct details for a 68, but no Thermactor and no stock air cleaner. Although I'll have these parts for ease of restoring to stock if preferred later.

I gotta tell ya.... I'm really excited about doing this! Of course, all the assembly line details will remain with markings, techniques, finishes, tags, paint blops. In the end, I think it'll really pull together nicely. And if not... you heard it here first when it makes the news as the biggest flop in Automotive Restoration History!!

So.... here's some parts and a 67 Grille installed. More this week!!

Cheers
Dave

My car has the 8000 RPM tach and as such, came with a tripometer. Bullitt did too. The clock will be rebuilt as well, but the faces of the gauges are in great shape. And look at those original miles!!

And this is why it takes 5hrs to install 3 parts. The radiator to hood seal.... the got the ribbing right and then failed on the length. Interesting thing on mine.... usually this is stapled to the metal support but mine was clipped on. And enter the winner for the Worst Designed Part of 2018 so far [ I haven't seen the rest yet ahs the year is still pretty early so I expect this to Award to be usurped] are the rear bumper guards. The closest one is the correct fit and the lower one is how it comes. :hmmm::rolleyes2:

Yep... when dealing with parts made 6500 miles away, sometimes some "persuasion" is in order! And carpet installation 101: 1. Lay out the supposedly, molded, carpet and see how lousy it fits. 2. Wonder if Taka or some other make made a Mustang model since this carpet doesn't remotely fit a Ford Mustang. 3. Get out a lot of glue and go to town! 4. Position carpet wrong and realize directions mean what they say about "instant bond". 5. Sell car to Phil unfinished with strategically offset carpet permanently glued down.:frown:

But seriously.... yesterday was Heater Box restoration day and the carpet and side sills are in! I also went with the Accessory Panels to really make it pop when you open the door. More interior work to come today!

Oh.... and since I'm shipping the car back to Ohio, instead of the fresh Bullitt plates... maybe I need to restore the plates that came with the car? :hmmm::biggthumpup::3gears:

Moving right along.... I'm into the interior. Step one was to mask things off and spray the Metallic Black funk down on the dash frame. Red Oxide visible on the underside and firewall and notice the inspection markings on the wiper motor. Also, the pivot transmissions had yellow and green marks on them, much like the suspension markings do signifying L and R. Will anyone notice this? No... but I will! Once that was done I turned my attention to the instrument cluster. I went with a Scott Drake clock, bezel, and lenses. Extremely happy with the quality of these parts. I left the factory installed surface rust on the back of the cluster housing for sentimental reasons. :eek2: After all, much like freshly painted car waiting for its first ding, I'm heading this confrontation off at the pass by leaving this little bit of flash rust on the car so no other rust forms! :rolleyes2::hmmm::bs:

Heater Box, main wiring, and today defroster vents, dashpad and bezels go in. Notice on the instrument cluster the "Brake" light is not installed. Since my car has the uber rare convenience group, that's incorporated into that panel and instead of "Brake" it says "Park". Another neat thing is the seatbelt warning light says "Belts" yet the aftermarket lens you can buy say "Seat". Why they can't get that right is beyond me, but I kept the original bezels and lenses.

More to come!

Moving right along, transmission redone! What needed to be replaced? That would be everything:thumbsdown::mad2: But, the good news is with 100% new everything, it'll take a beating while chasing that Charger!:3gears: Sadly, water filled the case and while the gears were free, they were pretty badly pitted. And looking closer...123426.... the last 6 of my VIN! I didn't know Ford stamped the transmissions that year. I know on Mopars it was hit and miss. Pretty excited to difinitively know the engine and trans and 100% "Born With" [Who the heck came up with that stupid term, anyway?]. Anywho, I replicated all the markings I found so it's ready to meet up with its partner.... the Boat Anchor 390.... that I get back tomorrow from the engine shop. Very exciting! Sending unit with the low fuel warning sensor, original steering box, and AM 8-Track all sent out for restoration.

And this sweet looking '67 GT500 steering wheel... just like Frank used.... Will be dropped off at the upholstery guy to get leather wrapped. I really like that wood look though. Speaking of seats... it's time to join the Blister Battalion and recover those bleached out buckets! Man that's a lot of Bs...I personally like Ds... but that's neither here nor there. :hmmm:

1. Cylinder Heads: Turrets from the Merrimack

It's the detail time! Not a whole lot to show in pics, but the big thing will be the engine being reunited with the transmission today and hopefully installed in the car early next month. :headbang: In preps for the major lift, I created Jigasaurus II. Now, you guys may remember me from Jigasaurus I which held the fenders and other parts while painting them. But what you may not realize I had a series of instructional videos entitled "How to mothball your battleship" and "Dig your own grave, and SAVE!":rolleyes2::D

So, I created a nice bracket to bolt to the engine that keeps chains and other parts away from the fresh paint and shiney things. Being a math major, I triangulate the hypotenuse from the third side which told me the fulcrum I needed topwise to get an equalarium balance on the motor:scholar::dunno: Err.... something like that. Anyway, this sturdy bracket will make installation a breeze!

G70 Bias Plys are mounted up, and the front disks are loaded and installed. Brake and fuel lines are in too. Next up is undercoating on the wheel wells. I'm waiting on my gears for the rear. I'm going with 3.90 Super Positrack. What's that? Well... instead of being more oompf off the line, it actually puts out a tractor beam pulling the car in front of you backwards making you that much more faster! I know.... cool huh?

More later... pics of the engine matted up to come!

Some more details....I couldn't get the trans to mate up with the engine, so I just used those old bolts that hold the transmission on to cinch it on up! Just a few weird noises, but overall, seemed to go in ok. I think the new clutch disk may have caused the issue. This car isn't use to new stuff, so maybe like someone receiving a new spleen, it's the body rejecting the new parts? :dunno:

Pedals detailed up....I even kept the factory date stamp on it. Will anyone see it? Sure they will after I jamb their head up there! And according to my Buildsheet, my rear springs were marked white and orange, so I replicated that. Alrighty....3.90 Auburn Posi installed, and all the factory markings applied. That goopy-runny teal blop is pretty much spot on to what the original marking looked like. I had a new driveshaft made up since the original was so pitted. Good part? No pitting. Bad part? They painted it black even after I told them specifically to not paint it. :( Oh well. What can you do? Well.. you do what you usually do in situations like this and that's spray Aircraft Paint Stripper on it! :naughty: Works way better on paint than it does people.

After getting the shaft down to bare steel, I applied RPM to it so it remains nice and natural-metally. After that, I applied the stripes that designate 390-4spd. Yes, they are 3/4" wide with about 2" in between and hand applied. So it's slopcity down there! See, at Ford, quality is Job-None. So no need for all those neat lines like GMs have.

Engine and trans go in the first week or March! Woo-hoo!

Moving on, the rear axle is all buttoned up and bolted in. Brake lines, and even the original vent hose which showed a factory marking. Some dash parts going in, and the engine now has the fan/ clutch and lift hooks installed. I'm waiting on the smog system to come in too. My car had it originally, but Bullitt did not. I want the underhood to be 100% stock so I'm installing it. But, I'll be gutting the pump and the head ports are blocked off, so it'll be a dummy system... like me!:grin:
