A Wisconsin cruise ship passenger faces years in Cayman Islands prison after a gun was found in her luggage

This just happened (yesterday). If you are a frequent "cruiser" or you plan to go on a cruise ship it's VERY important you understand a few things. Once you leave the territorial waters of the USA you are no longer protected (legally) by it's laws. When you arrive at a destination, you are now under their law. Their police can come aboard your ship and search ANY cabin at any time and there is nothing you can do about it. You now fall under their laws which may not include the right to an attorney and may include mandatory prison time for certain offences.

DO NOT brings guns or drugs (yes even "mary jane") on a cruise ship! The risk is not worth it. If you have a "carry permit" for a hand gun - it is worthless outside of the USA. And that's what happen to the 68-year-old Madison, Wisconsin, woman

Another note, law enforcement and government on some of these islands can be very corrupt also. I nearly had an issue in Jamaica over an old license plate I purchased from an outdoor vendor at Montego Bay.

Even if something is ancient it can still be useful. The Mycenaean Bridge at Kazarma was built more than 3,000 years ago but is still used by modern Greeks. The arch bridge is an impressive feat of engineering, as it doesn't use any type of adhesive to hold itself together. It was also built with curbs, presumably to keep speeding chariots from falling off.

The country that was home to Picasso and El Greco is also believed to be home to the world's oldest cave paintings. A study by the University of Bristol, based on carbon-dating results in 2012, determined that the prehistoric dots and crimson-hued stencils in a cave on Spain's northern coast are more than 40,000 years old. Archaeologists think Neanderthals could be the oldest painters.

When most people hear the word "fossils," they likely think of dinosaurs, but scientists can learn a lot from the fossilized remains of organisms of all sizes. In 2017, researchers announced they had discovered tiny bacteria fossils in layers of quartz found in Canada that are believed to be at least 3.8 billion years old. Scientists believe these fossils can help us learn about the very first lifeforms that took shape after Earth formed.

The oldest known materials of any kind on the planet are zircon crystals found in western Australia's Jack Hills region that are 4.4 billion years old. Elements in these zircons suggest they came from water-rich, granite-like rocks. The presence of quartz as well as the result of isotopic studies of the materials suggests that continental crust was forming very early in Earth's history and that tectonic activity was occurring as well.

There’s only one known example of a 1943 Lincoln-D penny struck in bronze alloy instead of the zinc plated steel (bronze and copper were being saved to fill metal shortages during World War II). Though there’s no record of any other bronze 1943 pennies minted in Denver (indicated by the “D” on the coin), up to 20 examples may have been struck on the bronze alloy at each of the Philadelphia and San Francisco Mints. This particular coin sold September 2010 in a private sale by Legend Numismatics of Lincroft, New Jersey for $1.7 million

Cologne (ie, "Koln") Germany

My brother in law and his wife used to live in Cologne.

During one of our visits we decided to go see the Cathedral, boldly without our hosts. This was back before GPS, so Christa gave directions (go to the corner in this town, go left; go til you see the tree in the road, go right, stay on that road until you see the red barn painted white, etc). Naturally, it didn't take long to get off the map - but - the good news is the Cathedral towers over the rest of the city so as long as you keep heading in that direction you will find it. All was well.

Until it was time to go back. Of course there were not road signs that said "To Steve and Christa's apartment". So I tried back tracking to no avail.

My wife and her mom were in the back of the mini van, chittering away, snacking on some local delicacies.

I said "Babe, I do not know where I am going".

She paused long enough to say something nebulous and not helpful, like "oh - you always find the way. You'll do fine".

I drove a bit farther, before trying again. "Honey - this is really not working. I could use some help up here navigating".

Again, she said something both wonderfully encouraging and yet singularly unhelpful.

Finally - I lost it. I said "BABE!! WE ARE LOST!!; WE ARE IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY!! I DON'T SPEAK THE LANGUAGE!! WE ARE GOING TO DIE ALONE IN THE STREETS!" or something to that effect.

She looked at me, quietly, and with big brown puppy dog eyes, said "...would you like a bite of chocolate?"

That was our "go to" phrase for many years when we needed to add some levity to a tense domestic scene: "...would you like a bite of chocolate?". (The answer to all life's problems, apparently).

Needless to say we did find our way back. I stopped at a Shell Station that had a giant map out by the road. By memorizing local landmarks (traffic circles, mostly) I was able to get us back to the apartment.

That was also my first opportunity to drive on the famed Autoban: in a mid 80's Toyota Minivan, with a top speed of about 100! (kph, that is).

The discovery of a fossilized, 42-million-year-old, four-legged whale is shedding new light on the evolution and geographical spread of these aquatic mammals.

The ancestors of modern whales and dolphins evolved from a small, four-limbed hoofed animal that lived in south Asia around 50 million years ago, during the Eocene. Fossil evidence suggests these aquatic mammalian pioneers reached North America by 41.2 million years ago, swimming from West Africa across the Atlantic. The surprise discovery of a previously unknown, 42.6-million-year-old quadrupedal whale along the coast of Peru has resulted in an important addendum to this story: Ancient whales made South America, and not North America, their first home in the New World.

I went to purchasing and I asked who on the approved source list sells us horns. (We were really out of time. This whole Road Runner car was being done, not overnight, but in less than two months.) They gave me the three horn vendors that we were permitted to buy horns from, so I called the chief engineer of each of these three companies and told them the story. I said, ''I'm going to send you a tape in today's mail. I want you to listen to it at once. Call me back as soon as possible if you have anything in your roster of horns that is anything like this sound: "Beep, beep!"

Very shortly, they all called back. Two of them said, "Not a prayer!" The third one, the Spartan Horn Company and Richie Vanstroodle—who turned out to be a heck of a guy—really wanted to get into the swing of this thing. He said, "Hey, we've got a horn that sounds pretty close. We're building it for a military vehicle. It's built to government specifications. It works under water. And it's really expensive because it meets all these requirements: Forty-five dollars a piece."

I said, "No way! I tell you what, I want you to get your best cost estimator to review that horn. Have him work all night at this. Call me back tomorrow and tell me the cost after you take off all the waterproofing and everything else but keeping it a legal horn, meeting government regulations. Tell me what you can sell it for."

They called back and it turned out to be like a 47-cent penalty over what we were already spending for horns, so we had a horn. Sure, we said we'd buy that little bit of "plus;" at least I say "a little bit." People in the industry would drive each other up the wall just to save a dime on a car. But a dime times a couple hundred thousand cars is a lot of money! In that case, we would have done a lot to save a small amount of money on each car. Cars are implicitly the product of a lot of cost reduction: coldly looking for pennies, trying to get the money out so we can be a competitive company and sell a car for a competitive price.

But we had the horn and it almost fit into the car. The horn was held by one bolt. There's a little tab that goes into one hole and there's a second hole for the screw that mounts the horn. That hole in the horn bracket was about 5/32 of an inch long. So we had to have them move that hole that little distance and moving that hole that little distance was the biggest tooling cost ($243 out of a total of less than $500) associated with the production of the Road Runner car!

Anyway, we had the horn. It turned out that they had a test that had to be conducted on every horn before it was authorized to be released: an engineering cycling test. The horn was placed in a sound-proof box and the switch was flipped—beep, beep, beep, beep—twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. At that rate there wouldn't be enough time to get the test completed in order to support buying it for the start of production of the car. Remember, we were doing this car at the very last minute, so there were a number of things that came up which almost scrubbed the car.

I told my story to the supervisor in charge of the lab and my understanding that his engineering responsibility was to never release anything that hasn't passed all engineering tests. Fortunately, his view of it was, "Hey, I'm responsible for releasing only things that are right, and I can't shirk my responsibility. "

So, I offered hjm a bargain: "If you will release the horn, right now—we both expect that it's going to pass the test—I will write you a letter assuming full responsibility for the horn." Now, I had no authority to do that! Who was I? I was just a product planner, but the guy said, "Okay." And he actually released the horn. And I wrote the letter.

Eventually, after the horn was in production, the test was completed and the horn was a hit. But, it's just a little example of the inter-relationships that were played out in getting the horn and in getting the car itself. We got the horn, we got the bird. We had all the mechanical components.

Painting your front door a shade of black can boost its sale price by $6,271, on average, according to a 2018 analysis by real estate website Zillow.
No other combination of color and surface boosted sale prices by anywhere near as much as shades of black on a front door. The second-most impactful combination — light taupe and similar shades of paint in living rooms — boosted sale prices by an average of $2,793, according to the analysis.

Sometimes it's not easy to find the complete origin story of a company logo. General Motors knows who created its enduring Chevrolet bowtie logo and when -- company co-founder William C. Durant in 1913 -- but the inspiration for the design is lost to history. The prevailing theory is that Durant was inspired by a wallpaper pattern in a French hotel, but other theories include that Durant was inspired by a similar pattern he saw while on vacation in Virginia in 1912, or that Durant created a stylized version of the Swiss flag as a nod to Louis Chevrolet's Swiss birthplace.

The two front flat black "patches" were decals made out of a material called DiNoc and had a slight texture to them. With the addition of the miniature decal (that was used on the rear wing) placed on the driver's side headlamp bucket, we have a unique situation of a decal on a decal. The "patches" served no useful function other than as a styling cue tied into the standard Black vinyl roof which all SuperBirds had.

Though most people will call it "Petty Blue" the color's real name is "Corporate Blue."

When the Pettys painted their first car this color they had blue paint on hand but not enough to paint the whole car; they mixed the blue with some white to make it go farther, resulting in the trademark "Petty Blue".

Same thing happened to a buddy of mine in the early 80's. Fell asleep at the wheel and hit the end of a guard rail. He lost both legs.
The silver lining was we found out that concert venues had awesome wheelchair seating and allowed one escort with the wheelchair bound individual. Great way to get great seat for a sold out show.

When I was an Atlanta firefighter we caught a call where a guy took the top rail of a chain link fence through the windshield. Hit him dead center of the forehead(I'm surprised it didn't skewer his head, it went through the head rest). He was sitting in a chair and talking when we got there. When they loaded him up they got his legs above his head and that was it. Instant death. I got two lines started enroute to Grady Hospital. I wasn't the best at starting IV's, so getting two going in a bouncing ambulance was a high water mark.

I wish we would have had cell cameras back then. We rarely got any pics.

Random roll over pic. I'm on the far right. That was in a 25mph zone.

Union Pacific said Wednesday steam shop crews lit a fire in Big Boy 4-8-8-4 No. 4014 for the first time in 60 years on April 9. It was the first time the engine was fired up as an oil burner.

The May 9 ceremony will feature Union Pacific's iconic steam locomotives, Living Legend No. 844 and Big Boy No. 4014. The two will meet, recreating the historic image taken at Promontory Summit on May 10, 1869. The Big Boy is one of eight left in the world. It's newly refurbished and the only one in operation.

Back in April 1939 and armed with a $5,000 grant supplied by the Rockefeller Foundation, Columbia University Teachers College professor Frank Cyr took a tour of ten states to gauge the extent of school transportation issues. What he found proved that student transportation was in a sorry state—many students had no dependable way to get to school and the ones who did often traveled in unsafe, unstandardized buses in the over 100,000 school districts that existed back then (in contrast to the roughly 13,000 that exist today). One of the huge variations in school transportation that he saw? Bus color.

There were many different bus colors in the United States before this conference; several districts even planned to have red, white, and blue buses as a way of promoting patriotism among students. Cyr presented his new options to education officials, a reported '50 shades ranging from lemon yellow to deep orange-red.' The matter was settled quickly. Yellow, or 'National School Bus Glossy Yellow,' as it is officially called by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, was chosen for its high visibility and the way it emphasized the bold, black writing that would be on the side of each bus to denote its respective school district, important factors for vehicles that travel during early morning and late afternoon hours.

The idea of finding the ship was first raised in 1914. But it wasn't until July 1986 that Robert Ballard (pictured center with survivors Eva Hart and Bertram Dean) discovered the wreckage of the ship. He and his team had been photographing US submarines on a secret Cold War mission, and were allowed to search for the Titanic as a side project after the main job was done.

If parallel parking is your nemesis, you may be a little disappointed the five-wheel self-parking car never made it past prototype stage. The vehicle was developed by designer Brooks Walker in the early 1950s on behalf of Cadillac.

https://i.postimg.cc/KYY0Z53H/AAzQ2IH.jpg (https://postimages.org/)

A series of hydraulic pumps and gears would push out the fifth wheel from the rear, so the driver could rotate the back of the car and glide into the space with ease. Cadillac shelved the project but Walker carried on designing parallel parking systems into the late 1970s.
